Back to the Working World With Bobbie Gentry, Karla Bonoff and Our Petty Month Finale, Monday, October 30, 2023

Good morning, working folks! It’s back to the real world, and we’re here to see that your transition is a more pleasant one with some great programming.

Here’s your musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bobbie Gentry Live at BBC Studios, London, UK 1968-1969

The reclusive Bobbie Gentry brought along two friends in James Taylor and Donovan when she graced the studios at the BBC. Gentry was a brilliant songwriter who only ever wanted to write for others, so she was a reluctant star. She eventually just walked away, but left some great music behind.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

Here we have another brilliant female songwriter who has helped to put other singers on the map, like Linda Ronstadt. In turn, Linda Ronstadt has shone a light on Karla Bonoff. And that’s how this works. As it turns out, and as Ronstadt will tell you, Karla Bonoff can sing. She’s in our Spotlight today.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Piazza Napoleone, Lucca, Italy, June 9, 2012

We close out Tom Petty’s birthday month with a great live performace from Lucca, Italy.

Hey, it’s Monday. It happens once a week and there’s not a damned thing we can do about it. But there is something we can do to make it less bleak, and that is to play great music. We’re here 24/7 with no commercial interruption and at no charge to you!

8:00 p.m. Badfinger Live at The Cowtown Auditorium, St. Louis, MO, April 7, 1972

Badfinger hung around on the edges of greatness, but never quite got there. And mostly because of a really bad guy who managed them wiped them out financially (not The Beatles either). They were the one bona fide band the Apple Label signed, and they left us a bucket load of great songs.

Come on. We’re at midweek, and everything is downhill from here. We’re headed for the weekend (and I’m headed for vacation) after today. Let us help you get there!

You don’t need no stinking tickets:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Certainly a favorite musical genre here in The Mermaid Lounge. We look forward every month to hearing Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Cahoots by The Band FINAL AIRING!

Today is our final airing of this great album by a great Americana music band. Tomorrow we’ll have a brand new selection.

A big, big favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge who founded one of the best fucking folk-rock bands on the planet in The Lovin’ Spoonful. John Sebastian was a definer of the sixties sound and a fixture in Laurel Canyon. Today he’s our featured singer-songwriter.

It’s Simply Sunday With Our New AOW From the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and ‘The Psychedelic Express’ EP, August 20, 2023

We keep it pretty simple here in The Mermaid Lounge on Sundays. A couple of great programs with a lot of big, wide Open Stream. This Sunday is no different.

Get on board with today’s programming:

Paul Butterfield Blues Band is widely regarded as one of the greatest electric blues bands ever, whose contributions to the genre during the 60s and 70s cannot be denied, but it’s safe to say a lot of Butterfield’s fans were not enthralled with this release. That’s what happens when people get pidgeon-holed into doing the same thing over and over. Do I think it’s one of their best? Nope. I don’t. But I don’t regret owning it, or playing it as our AOW.

3:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Hell, if the AOW disappoints, drop a tab and tune in to The Psychedelic Express where you’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

Welcome to Thursday in The Lounge With ‘The Psychedelic Express’ EP, The Young Rascals With Our AOW, and Creedence Clearwater Revival In the Spotlight Later, July 20, 2023

Good morning, psychedelic music lovers! We’re going to kick off the programming with just about five hours of that great genre this morning, followed by The Young Rascals with our AOW, and CCR In the Spotlight later.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Get on board. You don’t need no tickets to hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Jefferson Airplane, The Animals, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Groovin’ by The Young Rascals

We’re winding down on this one. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Creedence Clearwater Revival

Closing out our programming for today is a musical band of brothers born in Berkeley who sound just like they walked out of the Louisiana bayou. One of the best damned bands of the late sixties and seventies.

Tune us in, people. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. And our music isn’t interrupted by commercial advertising. What are you waiting for?

We Head To the Weekend With ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, Our AOW, and Some ‘Live’ Kinks Later, Thursday, June 29, 2023

Good morning, all! With the exception of Dylan’s AOW, it’s kind of a British Invasion today with five hours of music from across the pond and some ‘live’ music from the battling Davies brothers later!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan

Released in 1969, this was Dylan’s total immersion in country music and it includes a duet with the great Johnny Cash with The Girl From The North Country. We’re winding down on this one. The final airing is sometime Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The Kinks Live at The Palladium, New York, December 31, 1980

What better way to close the day than with some music from the battling Davies brothers. Fist fights in the dressing room were not unheard of back in the day, but they made a hell of a lot of great music together.

As we approach the July 4th holiday, it’s only fitting that we play this great July 4th concert by CCR live from the iconic Fillmore in San Francisco.
