Sunday is Folk Day With Our Big EP in Between Early Live Dylan and a Gordon Lightfoot ‘Spotlight’, September 29, 2024

Good morning, folk music lovers! We’ve got some good stuff today, with our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP sandwiched between early live Dylan and a Gordon Lightfoot Spotlight feature!

Here’s your Sunday Folk-day lineup:

I was eight years old when Bob Dylan performed at the Finjan Club. I actually discovered The Beatles first. Dylan came later, but the connection was instant. This is very early Dylan, but some call it one of his most passionate performances. It includes a few rarely-heard Dylan originals, including The Death of Emmet Till.

1:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We’ve got our big folk EP this afternoon where you will hear Bob Dylan along with John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Joni Mitchell, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Gordon Lightfoot

This guy is a giant of folk, folk-rock and country, and who is also rightfully credited with bridging the gap between folk and pop and defining the folk-pop sound of the seventies. He has been called the greatest Canadian songwriter, although I’m sure Joni Mitchell and Neil Young fans would have something to say about that. There’s plenty of room for all of them, and he is certainly on that list.

Kids, it’s Sunday and that is a day of rest by definition, is it not? Personally, I think retail business establishments should be closed on Sundays. One day will not kill anyone. But I digress. If you’re lucky enough to not have to work a retail Sunday, tune us in. The Magic Button is below.

Monday Brings Bob Dylan Live With The Heartbreakers, Eva Cassidy and Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP, July 29, 2024

Good morning, workforce! We’re back at it already, but we’ve got some great musical programming to get you through the day.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at Rich Stadium, Orchard Park, NY, July 4, 1986

Dylan and his band of choice for the True Confessions Tour back in ’86!

2:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy left us far too soon, passing at the age of just 33. However, while she was on this planet she made the best of her time using her soprano voice to interpret jazz, folk and blues music. We’ve got her In The Spotlight this afternoon.

5:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We have a late-in-the-day airing of our big, bad folk EP today where you’ll hear John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Tom Rush, Eric Andersen, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, James Taylor, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family, Neil Young and more!

Saturday Brings a J.J. Cale Spotlight, ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ and Linda Ronstadt at The Record Plant, April 27, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and weekenders alike! We have made it intact, and we are celebrating with some great music today.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of J. J. Cale

Has there been a musician in history so revered who missed out on what we now call ‘the big time’? J.J. Cale invented the Oklahoma sound and his songs have propelled many an artist, but ‘fame’ eluded him. And perhaps that was by choice. Bobbie Gentry deliberately shunned the limelight. All we know is that artists like Tom Petty and Eric Clapton revered his handiwork, and we love him at the radio station, so we are putting him In the Spotlight.

12:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We’ve got five hours of folk music uninterrupted this afternoon with John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Phil Ochs, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family, Neil Young and more!

8:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA, November 18, 1973

We’ve got some early Linda Ronstadt for you here this evening with a lot of Don’t Cry Now and just a hint of Heart Like A Wheel and the greatness to come.

You have absolutely nothing to lose by tuning us in. We don’t ask for a credit card or personal information. That’s because we’re totally free 24/7 playing the best music on radio, Internet or otherwise. See for yourself.

Thursday Brings the ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP, “Cahoots” by The Band, and New, Live Emmylou Harris, September 21, 2023

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Cahoots by The Band

Coming around again. If you haven’t heard it yet and you’re curious, this is the time. Only one final airing left on Saturday.

This event happened about seven months prior to their great live show at The Ryman, which led to the eventual revitalization of this great music hall, the original home of The Grand Ole’ Opry. We have played that one here before. This particular outing is a completely different set list of songs, twenty-three in all. It’s a beautiful thing.

11:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

It’s Sunday In The Mermaid Lounge, and It’s a Folk Music Kind of Day With Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and Tim Buckley With the Album of The Week, December 18, 2022

Good morning, folk music lovers. We love this particular playlist here in the Lounge. Very eclectic and full of great classic folk along with musicians who have paid homage to the genre even while not calling themselves “folk singers.” See for yourself.

Here’s today’s musical journey:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Goodbye and Hello by Tim Buckley NEW!

A lot of people don’t really know Tim Buckley. It took me a while to discover him as well. He was one of those singer-songwriters we call a changeling. He began his career in folk music but spread his wings into jazz, psychedelic, funk, soul, avant-garde and more, before dying at the age of 28 in 1975 from a heroin and morphine overdose. Goodbye and Hello was Buckley’s second studio album released in August of 1967 and is a combination of folk-rock and psychedelic-folk.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

The question you have to ask yourself is what kind of folk music best suits you? Because it’s a deep-rooted musical style that has changed and evolved over the years without losing its basic identity. I remember when Dylan took it electric. It created quite a stir. We’ve got it all here. You will hear Bob Dylan, John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Ochs, Townes Van Zandt and more!

This is a great day to join an international community of music lovers who enjoy the wide spectrum of stuff we play, and appreciate the fact that there’s some stuff we don’t play. We are not trying to be all things to all people; just some things to a lot of people. And we are totally commercial-free. We’re also completely free to you. Your money is absolutely no good here.

Our Roots are Showing With The ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP, Baez Sings Dylan, Shawn Colvin, and LIVE DEAD! Later, Saturday, July 16, 2022

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artist

This one’s always a treat, folks. We’ve got the luminaries of the folk music scene along with those who pay very able tribute to the craft. Folk represents the origins of the protest music movement in so many ways. You’ll hear Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Harry Chapin, Phil Ochs, The Kingston Trio, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, The Carter Family and many more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Baez Sings Dylan by Joan Baez FINAL AIRING!

What can we say about this one. The perfect album for a folk music kind of day. This is the swan song for this one. We’ve got a brand new album all ready for tomorrow.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Today we put a great artist In the Spotlight in Shawn Colvin, a woman who has one foot firmly planted in folk and another wherever she pleases at any given moment. One thing is for certain, you always know Shawn Colvin’s true roots.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Roscoe Maples Pavillion, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, February 9, 1973 NEW!

We’ve got another new soundboard recording of The Dead, this one from Palo Alto. Almost thought I’d have a rare repeat until this one fell in our lap here. Enjoy.

We’re cooking here in The Lounge today with The Music Mermaid at the helm. You’ll be in great hands while I spend my final day toiling with the entitled consumer masses. She’s ready and raring to go as we get off to an early start. And remember, we’re always 100%, no-strings-attached, no surprises free. All day every day for eternity.

It’s Saturday with a Happy 80th McCartney Celebration, the Final Airing of Our AOW, Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and LIVE DEAD! Later, on June 18, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a great lineup for you today and it’s a bit busier here in The Lounge than usual because we’ve got McCartney’s 80th birthday celebration later on.

Happy 80th Birthday to Sir Paul McCartney!

Here’s today’s musical journey:

10:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We begin the programming day with this great extended playlist that includes tunes from John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Phil Ochs, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: American Tune by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s Album of The Week by the late, great Eva Cassidy who, unfortunately, didn’t live long enough to see her success. Don’t miss this collection of rehearsal tunes and live performances.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

Today we say happy 80th birthday to a true musical living legend who’s still rocking away on his ‘Got Back’ tour. We’ve got Beatles’ stuff, solo performances, his stint with Wings…it’s all here for a couple of hours tonight.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Summer Jam, Watkins Glen, New York, July 28, 1973

Tonight’s LIVE DEAD! is a rare repeat, but it hasn’t been aired since 2020, so it should sound just like new to those of you who aren’t Deadheads (and they don’t care how many times they hear a Grateful Dead show; it’s all new to them).

We’re chock full of stuff today and we think you’ll like it. There’s no better way to kick start your weekend than with the little radio station that could. (I think I like that.) There are, of course, some things we just can’t do, like play rap and screaming heavy metal death, charge for listening, or play commercial advertising. But we’re pretty damned good with everything else.

Today We’ve Got Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and a Brand New Spotlight With The Mamas & The Papas, Friday, May 20, 2022

We finally put The Mamas & The Papas In the Spotlight this evening!

Here’s Friday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

Folk music is front and center today as the heart and soul of protest music. Spend the day with artists who shaped the folk music resurgence of the sixties, and those who simply pay homage to the craft. You’ll hear John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Linda Ronstadt, and many more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Mamas & The Papas NEW!

This one is long overdue here in The Mermaid Lounge. One of the key groups in the Laurel Canyon scene finally gets its due here. This is a perfect fit today because The Mamas & The Papas were instrumental in the marriage of folk and rock, much in the same way The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds were instrumental in the birth of country-rock. The Mamas & The Papas were only on the music scene from 1965 to 1968, but their impact was significant.

Great day to tune us in, folks. We’ve got a great programming day lined up. Keep in mind that our programming is interspersed in all that great wide Open Stream where you’ll hear our ever-rotating collection of 27,000+ songs and growing. We’re totally free 24/7 and ask no questions except: What are you waiting for?
