11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at Rich Stadium, New York, July 4, 1986 NEW!

From the second leg of the infamous True Confessions tour. We’ve aired other shows from this tour in the past, but never this venue. According to Mike Campbell, it was playing with Bob Dylan that taught the band how to be spontaneous on stage and respond to what the audience wanted. If that’s the case, they learned their lesson well.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blues From Laurel Canyon by John Mayall FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of Blues From Laurel Canyon is today, so make sure you’re on your tab at 3:00 p.m. When you wake up Sunday, there will be a brand new Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The (Young) Rascals

One of the finest bands ever to enter a recording studio right here. A Mermaid Lounge favorite for sure, and they are taking their place in the spotlight today.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Academy of Music, New York, March 26, 1972 NEW!

Another new show from the world’s premier jam band. This one comes from the Academy of Music in New York. Eventually we’ll have to start repeating shows, but not yet. There are still plenty to go, and every show is different…even on the same tour.

We’ve got The Blues Project recorded live between September 7-15 during an extended stint at The Matrix Club in San Francisco in 1966.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blues From Laurel Canyon by John Mayall

This is the second airing of this week’s selection (released in 1968), recorded just after the demise of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. This album adds to the Laurel Canyon musical legacy.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Stevie Ray Vaughan

What would Tuesday Bluesday be without Stevie Ray Vaughan? This playlist covers his career as a solo artist as well as his time with Double Trouble, and also includes both studio and live selections.

For more than half a century, B.B. King defined the blues for a global audience. This singer, songwriter and record producer was a guitar innovator, whose solos used a combination of fluid string bending, shimmering vibrato, and and staccato picking. Today, we put him in the spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: In The Midnight Hour & Other Hits by Wilson Pickett

The wicked one is back today for a second airing. Wilson Pickett was a big part of defining American soul music, placing 50 songs on the charts during his career. Some of the best are here today.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Play All Night Long, Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York, March 1992

This was the first multi-night stand the Allman Brothers played at the great Beacon Theatre in New York.

Tuesday Bluesday is always a great day to tune us in. In between all this great blues music, we have some great Open Stream with rock, rock n’ roll, R & B, gospel, soul, folk, cajun-zydeco, calypso and other world music.

Drugs, booze, you name it. We’ve all done it in our lifetime, and plenty of musicians and bands have written songs about it. We’ve got them here today in our expanded and updated playlist. Don’t be fooled into thinking Got To Get You Into My Life is about a woman and doesn’t belong here. McCartney himself admitted that he wrote it about his love for weed.

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village as part of the folk music revival of the early sixties. She has continued to roll on singing not only folk and blues, but jazz, country, pop, and R & B. She’s also loaned her pipes to the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, and is one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

This was the eleventh consecutive night for Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams tour back in ’77, added due to continued ticket demand. She was riding high in those day. I saw the tour in Boston and upstate New York, only two of the forty I would see her perform during her career.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Exodus by Bob Marley & The Wailers

This will be the final airing of Exodus as our Album of The Week. When you roll your butt out of bed tomorrow morning, we’ll have a brand new album in focus.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Marvin Gaye

Despite his many personal problems, Marvin Gaye was a musical marvel who was instrumental in shaping the Motown sound, first as a studio musician, then as a major artist with a string of hits. Because of this, he was often called The Prince of Motown. We put him In the Spotlight today.

We kick off Monday with Macca Music as a founding member of The Beatles and Wings, and as a solo artist. His career spans more than five decades, making him a living legend.

3:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness

Mudcrutch is known as Tom Petty’s “other” band, but it was actually Tom Petty’s first band…the band that left Gainesville for L.A., the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. When Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back together in 2008, it wasn’t just a diversion for him. Mudcrutch made some serious music, and we’ve got the entire catalogue here today.

It’s Memorial Day here and the only thing we’re celebrating today is music. No parades. No flag waving. None of that nonsense. Just music. Tune us in if you’re hanging around looking for something to do. You won’t regret it.

Before Jeff Lynne (and after, actually) was a Wilbury and a producer of Tom Petty’s albums, he was the front man for a band called The Move (we will play some material from them later this week), and ELO. We put his time with ELO In The Spotlight today.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live in ’75: The Rolling Thunder Revue

We continue our celebration of the birthday boy’s 80th year with a selection of Rolling Thunder Revue live music, vintage 1975. Later this week, we go back even further into the archives.

They say location is everything, and we’re here to prove it with a playlist of songs with prime locations either in the title or in the lyrics. I remember the first time I heard Valerie Carter. It was sometime in the seventies when my friends and I were literally traveling around like vagabonds following our favorite bands and singers to every live venue we could get to. I also remember that I wished Valerie Carter would show up at one of them. I eventually did see Valerie perform with Linda Ronstadt at the Orpheum Theatre. The combination of the two of them was like the second coming for me. Let’s never forget that Valerie Carter helped out her fellow musicians with that voice, but that she also had her own voice.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under The Covers

There’s no denying that The Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, and that Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. They were more than that, however. They were also one of the greatest cover bands ever, and loved to toss in remakes of others’ songs during their live performances in tribute to their favorite performers. We have two of these playlists, but in this one you’ll hear The Heartbreakers cover The Bobby Fuller Four, Bob Dylan, They Byrds, The Clash, J. J. Cale, and many more.

Tom Petty Shares His Record Collection, Lukas Nelson & POTR are In the Spotlight, and Joan Baez Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, January 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you this fine Sunday? We have a great line-up today sprinkled in all that Open Stream which, we are again expanding as we speak (or as I write).

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.
