It’s A Great Day When You Have Harris & Ronstadt Live On Stage Together, Laura Nyro Owns the Album of The Week, and The Band Closes Out The Programming, Sunday, December 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! This is my prototypical perfect programming day. The ladies dominate today, but we have The Band bringing up the rear later to close out the programming. (We do, however, return to Open Stream after; we are 24/7 baby; no interruptions.)

Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris together. Today, we have their Boston concert from 1999 on The Western Wall tour.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of the Week: Eli and The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro NEW!

Laura Nyro has made many people famous because she was such a fucking amazing songwriter. But when she sings her songs herself, it’s amazing. She has a special place in our hearts here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris, Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, on The Western Wall Tour, October 1, 1999 NEW!

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

More From The Beatles, Album of The Week, and Linda Ronstadt Live in My Town on Thursday, December 3, 2020

It’s another great day of music from The Mermaid Lounge: Just enough programming and plenty of Open Stream as we chug on toward a weekend of new music playlists!

Linda Ronstadt performs on stage in Boston with Valerie Carter (1995).

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Transformation

I guess I could have come up with a better title for this playlist, but it was hard for me to describe the giant leap The Beatles took from Rubber Soul onward. It was gigantic. This was undoubtedly their most creative and experimental time as a musical group in their writing and in the studio. George Martin was no small part of that endeavor.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

Time is winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. We’ve got one more chance for you to acquaint yourselves with The Dirty Knobs before we move on to a brand new selection on Sunday!

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, May 14, 1995

The photo above isn’t the best, but good photos of this show are very hard to come by. I was there, and this was undoubtedly one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen Linda Ronstadt perform. She was helped by friend Valerie Carter, who also opened for her. You don’t get the opportunity to see two great singers on stage together very often. I, luckily, did. (By the way, if you’re not familiar with Valerie Carter, you should make it a point to become familiar. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.)

Tune us in. Grease your wheels. This weekend we’ve got some brand new playlists coming up, along with some new live shows. We’ve been out there hunting, and all of this will carry over into the winter of our discontent. Hopefully, #BecomeUngovernable Radio can be an oasis in this vast wasteland.

Happy Thanksgiving From the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 11/26/2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers, and Happy Thanksgiving from your friends in The Mermaid Lounge! We have our Thanksgiving tradition coming up at 10:00 a.m., so be watching for the back story to Alice’s Restaurant in this blog entry.

Arlo Guthrie and his wife Jackie, on their wedding day. Arlo followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a great storyteller, as you will see later this morning!

Here’s today’s entry from the College:

November 26, 1955: Bill Haley’s Rock Around The Clock reaches #1 in the UK, and is considered to be the first rock n’ roll song to accomplish that feat.

November 26, 1962: The Beatles record their second single, Please Please Me, in 18 takes at London’s EMI Studios. They also record the B-side, Ask Me Why.

November 26, 1964: The Zombies record Tell Her No.

November 26, 1965: After having Thanksgiving dinner in a church in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, a young Arlo Guthrie and a friend returned to clean up. When they can’t find an open dump, the two dump their trash down a hill. They are arrested, fined $25 each, and are forced to clean up the trash again. When they return to the church, Arlo writes the Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, in which he embellishes some of the events. Nevertheless, it is a moment in musical history that we musicologists will not forget.

November 26, 1966: You Keep Me Hangin’ On by the Supremes took over the #1 slot on the R & B charts.

Also on November 26 of 1966, I’m Losing You by The Temptations enters the R & B charts and will become the band’s fourth straight #1 hit.

November 26, 1967: The promo clip of The Beatles’ Hello Goodbye was aired on The Ed Sullivan Show.

November 26, 1969: John Lennon works on a Beatles song for the final time when he mixes You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) at Abbey Road Studios. It is the B-side of their Let It Be single.

Also on November 26, 1969, The Band receives a Gold Record for their second album, The Band, one of the greatest albums ever recorded from one of the greatest bands on the planet.

November 26, 1977: Linda Ronstadt becomes one of only a handful of singers who manages to have two singles in the Top Ten simultaneously with Blue Bayou and It’s So Easy.

Also on this day in 1977, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album held the #1 slot for a then-record 29 weeks.

November 26, 2010: Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of six ounces of weed found on his tour bus travelling from LA to Texas. The prosecutor recommended no jail time because of the small amount, and instead suggested a $100 fine and that Willie sing Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain for the court.

Born On This Day

November 26, 1944: Alan Henderson, bassist with the Northern Irish band, Them, was born in Belfast. For those who do not know the band, Them had the 1965 UK hits Baby, Please Don’t Go and Here Comes The Night with Van Morrison on lead vocals.

November 26, 1945: Another bassist, John McVie, with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, is born in London.

And that is it for today’s lesson! We will be back in just a bit with today’s Thanksgiving Day line-up!

Linda Ronstadt’s Rarities, Van Morrison In the Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week, on Thursday, November 19, 2020

Good Morning, Global Music Lovers! We added Italy and Serbia to our list of listeners yesterday. That’s good because we’ve got some great programming today here from The Mermaid Lounge.

The incomparable Linda Ronstadt.

Here’s today’s musical line-up:

11:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt: Forgotten Gems and Rarities

There are some things that never make it to an album. We’ve got some live performances that have never been put to vinyl. And we also have the original music from the official Tracks of My Tears video. And it’s not the same as the released version! You’ll want to hear this playlist if you’re a Ronstadt fan.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Main Refrain by Wendy Waldman

Speaking of Linda Ronstadt, she helps out Wendy Waldman on this album!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

Yeah. Van is an acquired taste on a personal level. But musically? He’s a genius.

Drop by and sit a spell today. It’s a good day to get to know us. Once you try us, you may never go back to your regular music outlet.

We’re Back at The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 11/18/2020

Good Day, Music Lovers! We’re back here at the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge doing the deed for you.

Cat Stevens, now known as Yusef Islam.

Here’s today’s bucket of knowledge:

November 18, 1956: Fats Domino appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he sang Blueberry Hill. The song would peak at #2 on the US charts.

November 18, 1964: The Supremes appear on the TV Rock n’ Roll Show, Shindig, and sing Baby Love and Come See About Me.

November 18, 1967: To Sir With Love by Lulu sits on the top of the singles charts for a fifth week.

November 18, 1968: Glen Campbell, a former session musician for Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys, is awarded two Gold Records, one for Gentle On My Mind and the other for By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

The Jimi Hendrix double album, Electric Ladyland, reaches #1 on the US charts. Steve Winwood, Al Kooper, and Dave Mason appear on the album.

Randy Meisner, Jim Messina, Richie Furay, and Rusty Young — also known as Poco — make their debut at The Troubadour.

November 18, 1971: Procol Harum recorded a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra; portions would later be released on vinyl.

November 18, 1972: Bill Withers appears on Soul Train, where he sings his hit Lean On Me, and its follow-up Use Me Up.

Danny Whitten, of Neil Young’s back-up band Crazy Horse, dies of a heroin overdose. This tragic event inspires Young to write The Needle and the Damage Done.

Steely Dan makes its debut on the music scene with the release of the song, Do It Again. It would be the first of many hits for them.

Cat Stevens’ Catch Bull At Four begins a three-week run atop the album charts. Stevens played 14 instruments during the recording of the album, his most successful LP.

November 18, 1989: Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville reign at the top of the Adult Contemporary charts for a third week with the song Don’t Know Much.

And that brings today’s lesson to a close.

The Ladies Kick Off The Festivities, Our Album of The Week is Back, and The Soul Men Kick Ass This Evening, Thursday, November 5, 2020

Yes sir! And if that isn’t enough for you, we’ve got some great three-in-a-row’s lined up today. You really need to be here. It’s better than the shit on television, especially with this real-time shitshow going on.

The Ladies are in command this morning.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 4: Various Artists

It’s always a good day when the ladies are starting us out. Today we have volume 4 in our series, with Carly Simon, Lucinda Williams, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Carole King, Joan Baez, Phoebe Snow, and many more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sweet Baby James by James Taylor

We’re winding down here. After today, there’s only one more chance to hear this great album before we choose our new Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. The Soul Men, Volume 1: Various Artists

Another open-stream-type playlist that has become popular here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one features Bill Withers, Al Green, Wicked Wilson Pickett, Freddie King, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Otis Redding, Slim Harpo, The Four Tops, Fats Domino and more.

Call me biased, but this seems like a hell of a day to tune us in. Odds are you’ll find something you’ll like. Unless, of course, you’d rather pay for what you used to get for free. You know, before money became king. If that’s the case, I can’t help you.

Back To “Wildflowers & All The Rest” and The Ladies of The Mermaid Lounge Own The Evening, Thursday, October 29, 2020

Yes, it’s more streaming, some Wildflowers & All The Rest action as it is our Album of The Week, and we turn the stage over to the ladies later on.

Before we move along to the schedule, if you haven’t heard, the Wildflowers boxed set made its debut at no. 5 on the Billboard 200 it’s first week of release. If that isn’t enough, the original Wildflowers album was also re-released on October 16 and is currently at no. 1 on the rock charts. Think about that.

Maria Muldaur and Linda Ronstadt let it rip.

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty

Today’s Airing: Finding Wildflowers (Alternative Versions)

Tom Petty month is fast winding down, so we’re back to Wildflowers & All The Rest today. This is a great playlist that perfectly illustrates what a great band does on its journey to the final product. It’s a process.

Afternoon Open Streaming 26,000 songs without interruption.

Remember to listen for our new Three-in-a-Row feature throughout the afternoon!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 2

We haven’t aired this one for a while: Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris, Etta James, The Two Janis’ Girls: Joplin and Ian, Laura Nyro, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur and more!

We’re moving to our winter programming, whatever that turns out to be. We’re consistent, but not regimented. Our music selection remains as it always has. We’re free and we’ll stay that way. We respect your privacy and support your right to listen to free and open music without strings on your private information. We’re outside this system.

Petty Month Rocks On With Anthology & Wildflowers, while Linda Ronstadt & Her Friends Serenade Us, Friday, October 23, 2020

Good Morning, Music Mixologists! Petty Month is winding down on the calendar, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge. We are preparing for Petty’s Birthday Bash this weekend.

Linda Ronstadt & J.D. Souther on stage.

Here’s today’s line-up as we edge toward the weekend:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Live Anthology, Volumes 3 & 4

We wind down the week with The Live Anthology, released November 23, 2009. Up until that point in their brilliant 40-year run, these recordings represented the absolute best of The Heartbreakers live. So much has happened since then.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Friends: Duets & More

Linda Ronstadt is another of those artists. She’s our favorite female in the house. In essence, our House Songstress. In spite of her incredible solo career, Linda Ronstad always preferred singing with others, and it shows on this playlist. She could sing with anyone, any time, anywhere, and sing any style.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty

Today’s Airing: The Home Demos

A little late-night airing of what we’ve been playing over the past couple of weeks. We’ll be hearing much more over the weekend.

We have visitors from Poland on for the first time today. In fact, they joined just before my bedtime and are still on this morning. We’re waiting on ya’ll in the U.S. to wake the fuck up.

The Heartbreakers Live on Soundstage, The All-Girl Revue is Back; So is Live Dead and UNCHAINED, Saturday, October 17, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Saturday is always our busiest programming day and that holds true today as well. But trust me. It’s all good, as they say.

Bertha. Lookin’ Good.

Here’s your Saturday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live on Soundstage, April 19, 2003

This 2003 performance remains one of the best recordings of any band live anywhere on the planet. I’m not the only one who shares that opinion either. The Chicago location opens up all the possibilities of a blues outing, and the band does not disappoint.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of this great album is mid-afternoon today. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album featured on the blog.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 3: Various Artists

Tune in to nearly two hours of music with Linda Ronstadt, Phoebe Snow, Lydia Pense (a blast from the past; the lead singer of Cold Blood), The Shirelles, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, and many more!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, August 13, 1975 NEW!

No two shows the same. Ever. Even on consecutive nights. That’s the legend of The Grateful Dead.

We’re pretty busy this morning. People from around the world are tuning in already. That’s good. Because tomorrow, we begin unveiling Wallflowers & All The Rest from Tom Petty. Be here or be square, as they say.

Today We Open With Some Heartbreakers, Followed by Bonnie Raitt, Ronstadt at Rockpalast, Our Saturday LIVE DEAD, and Some Wildflowers, October 3, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s our usual full-slate Saturday as Tom Petty Month continues. We’ve got a great Heartbreaker’s playlist today. (Among other great musical experiences.)

I was at this Christmas Eve concert. Best thing I ever did.

Here comes your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under the Covers

The Heartbreakers were not only the best rock n’ roll band I’ve ever experienced, but they were also the best cover band. They loved to add ‘oldies’ for their live shows, even instrumental recreations like Goldfinger and Booker T’s Green Onions, which happen to be two of my favorites. My first introduction to this was their inclusion of a very energetic version of Shout at the ’78 Boston show. Enjoy this playlist. It’s one of two we own. We will get to the other also.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Give It Up by Bonnie Raitt

The final airing of Bonnie Raitt’s excellent Give It Up, our Album of The Week. Tomorrow is a new day. And a new album.

5:00 p.m. Tom Petty: Wildflowers & All The Rest, The New Releases

You’ll be hearing this short playlist regularly as we move toward the release of the entire package around mid-month.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Rockpalast, Germany, November 11, 1976

Linda Ronstadt as she approached her Zenith. She was in full control of her career from start to finish, and it shows.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at USAir Arena, Landover, Maryland October 9, 1994 NEW!

No two show ever the same. Yet another classic Dead performance here. This one in one of the hearts of the Deep State.

Turn On. Tune In. Drop Out. Sounds like a plan on a Saturday. You?
