It’s A Great Day When You Have Harris & Ronstadt Live On Stage Together, Laura Nyro Owns the Album of The Week, and The Band Closes Out The Programming, Sunday, December 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! This is my prototypical perfect programming day. The ladies dominate today, but we have The Band bringing up the rear later to close out the programming. (We do, however, return to Open Stream after; we are 24/7 baby; no interruptions.)

Laura Nyro has made many people famous because she was such a fucking amazing songwriter. But when she sings her songs herself, it’s amazing. She has a special place in our hearts here in The Mermaid Lounge.

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Transformation

I guess I could have come up with a better title for this playlist, but it was hard for me to describe the giant leap The Beatles took from Rubber Soul onward. It was gigantic. This was undoubtedly their most creative and experimental time as a musical group in their writing and in the studio. George Martin was no small part of that endeavor.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

Time is winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. We’ve got one more chance for you to acquaint yourselves with The Dirty Knobs before we move on to a brand new selection on Sunday!

The photo above isn’t the best, but good photos of this show are very hard to come by. I was there, and this was undoubtedly one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen Linda Ronstadt perform. She was helped by friend Valerie Carter, who also opened for her. You don’t get the opportunity to see two great singers on stage together very often. I, luckily, did. (By the way, if you’re not familiar with Valerie Carter, you should make it a point to become familiar. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.)

Here’s today’s entry from the College:

November 26, 1955: Bill Haley’s Rock Around The Clock reaches #1 in the UK, and is considered to be the first rock n’ roll song to accomplish that feat.

November 26, 1962: The Beatles record their second single, Please Please Me, in 18 takes at London’s EMI Studios. They also record the B-side, Ask Me Why.

November 26, 1964: The Zombies record Tell Her No.

November 26, 1965: After having Thanksgiving dinner in a church in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, a young Arlo Guthrie and a friend returned to clean up. When they can’t find an open dump, the two dump their trash down a hill. They are arrested, fined $25 each, and are forced to clean up the trash again. When they return to the church, Arlo writes the Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, in which he embellishes some of the events. Nevertheless, it is a moment in musical history that we musicologists will not forget.

November 26, 1966: You Keep Me Hangin’ On by the Supremes took over the #1 slot on the R & B charts.

Also on November 26 of 1966, I’m Losing You by The Temptations enters the R & B charts and will become the band’s fourth straight #1 hit.

November 26, 1967: The promo clip of The Beatles’ Hello Goodbye was aired on The Ed Sullivan Show.

November 26, 1969: John Lennon works on a Beatles song for the final time when he mixes You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) at Abbey Road Studios. It is the B-side of their Let It Be single.

Also on November 26, 1969, The Band receives a Gold Record for their second album, The Band, one of the greatest albums ever recorded from one of the greatest bands on the planet.

November 26, 1977: Linda Ronstadt becomes one of only a handful of singers who manages to have two singles in the Top Ten simultaneously with Blue Bayou and It’s So Easy.

Also on this day in 1977, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album held the #1 slot for a then-record 29 weeks.

November 26, 2010: Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of six ounces of weed found on his tour bus travelling from LA to Texas. The prosecutor recommended no jail time because of the small amount, and instead suggested a $100 fine and that Willie sing Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain for the court.

Born On This Day

November 26, 1944: Alan Henderson, bassist with the Northern Irish band, Them, was born in Belfast. For those who do not know the band, Them had the 1965 UK hits Baby, Please Don’t Go and Here Comes The Night with Van Morrison on lead vocals.

November 26, 1945: Another bassist, John McVie, with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, is born in London.

November 18, 1956: Fats Domino appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he sang Blueberry Hill. The song would peak at #2 on the US charts.

November 18, 1964: The Supremes appear on the TV Rock n’ Roll Show, Shindig, and sing Baby Love and Come See About Me.

November 18, 1967: To Sir With Love by Lulu sits on the top of the singles charts for a fifth week.

November 18, 1968: Glen Campbell, a former session musician for Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys, is awarded two Gold Records, one for Gentle On My Mind and the other for By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

The Jimi Hendrix double album, Electric Ladyland, reaches #1 on the US charts. Steve Winwood, Al Kooper, and Dave Mason appear on the album.

Randy Meisner, Jim Messina, Richie Furay, and Rusty Young — also known as Poco — make their debut at The Troubadour.

November 18, 1971: Procol Harum recorded a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra; portions would later be released on vinyl.

November 18, 1972: Bill Withers appears on Soul Train, where he sings his hit Lean On Me, and its follow-up Use Me Up.

Danny Whitten, of Neil Young’s back-up band Crazy Horse, dies of a heroin overdose. This tragic event inspires Young to write The Needle and the Damage Done.

Steely Dan makes its debut on the music scene with the release of the song, Do It Again. It would be the first of many hits for them.

Cat Stevens’ Catch Bull At Four begins a three-week run atop the album charts. Stevens played 14 instruments during the recording of the album, his most successful LP.

November 18, 1989: Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville reign at the top of the Adult Contemporary charts for a third week with the song Don’t Know Much.

Yes, it’s more streaming, some Wildflowers & All The Rest action as it is our Album of The Week, and we turn the stage over to the ladies later on.

Before we move along to the schedule, if you haven’t heard, the Wildflowers boxed set made its debut at no. 5 on the Billboard 200 it’s first week of release. If that isn’t enough, the original Wildflowers album was also re-released on October 16 and is currently at no. 1 on the rock charts. Think about that.

Linda Ronstadt is another of those artists. She’s our favorite female in the house. In essence, our House Songstress. In spite of her incredible solo career, Linda Ronstad always preferred singing with others, and it shows on this playlist. She could sing with anyone, any time, anywhere, and sing any style.

The Heartbreakers were not only the best rock n’ roll band I’ve ever experienced, but they were also the best cover band. They loved to add ‘oldies’ for their live shows, even instrumental recreations like Goldfinger and Booker T’s Green Onions, which happen to be two of my favorites. My first introduction to this was their inclusion of a very energetic version of Shout at the ’78 Boston show. Enjoy this playlist. It’s one of two we own. We will get to the other also.

The final airing of Bonnie Raitt’s excellent Give It Up, our Album of The Week. Tomorrow is a new day. And a new album.
