The venue was not listed in the title because this was mostly recorded during their 2002 tour at The Louisville Palace. Only one song, Down To The River To Pray, was recorded at another venue. This isn’t like real estate, location doesn’t matter. Alison Krauss & Union Station are great no matter where they play.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Barn by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

We give you this warning every week. We’re down to our last two airings of this great album. The final airing will be Saturday. On Sunday, we’ve got a brand new album lined up and ready to go.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger was a great power pop band who recorded a string of great hits during the 70’s. They began their career as The Iveys, and they were indeed the only bona fide stars ever signed by The Beatles to Apple Records. Their final story was a sad one. The band was fleeced by its manager (not the Beatles), and two band members committed suicide, including Pete Ham, their leader. Nevertheless, while they were on the Apple label, they made some of the greatest music on the planet. There are some songs you can’t help but associate with movies and TV shows. My favorite Badfinger song, Baby Blue, will forever be emblazoned in my brain as the song that closed the great series, Breaking Bad.

We’ve got another new soundboard recording of a great Dead live show here for your listening pleasure. But then again, the fact remains that every show sounds “new” when it comes to The Grateful Dead. (And by the way, no matter what they tell you, The Grateful Dead aren’t The Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia.)

We haven’t streamed this one in a while, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge consider Johnny Rivers an underrated musical entity. He was a hit machine during the sixties and seventies, and his live performances at the Whiskey are legendary. Today, we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company FINAL AIRING!

The band’s debut album was recorded over three days in 1966 and released in 1967. After the band’s success at the Monterey Pop festival, their contract was taken over by Columbia. The album was then re-released with the words “featuring Janis Joplin” on the cover. That was the beginning of her meteoric rise before her sad demise. This is our final airing today. Don’t miss it.

2:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this station takes over here and brings you into the evening. I don’t know what I can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. We lost him too soon would be a cliche. Today we feature his music as both a solo artist and with Double Trouble. Perhaps the words of B.B. King say it best. When somebody stated that you have to be black to play the blues, B. B. King replied, “Tell that to Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week, initially released in 1967. The album was then re-released by Columbia Records with Janis Joplin’s name on the cover after they took over Big Brother’s contract (as a result of the band’s huge success at the Monterey Pop Festival the same year).

7:00 p.m. The James Cotton Band Live at Antoine’s Night Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, July 1987 NEW!

To say that I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall for this one is an understatement. New Orleans is one of my favorite places on the planet. I was fortunate enough to visit the city many times on both business and pleasure, and the music was always the big draw for me (the food isn’t too shabby either). Joining Cotton for this performance is Matt “Guitar” Murphy (guitars), Luther Tucker (guitar), Calvin Jones (bass), Willie Smith (drums), and the legendary Pinetop Perkins on piano. James Cotton, of course, was on harp and vocals.
