He may not be his father, but he’s no slouch, and that would be an awful lot to ask of anyone. But Jakob Dylan is a more-than-fair songwriter, and we’ve got him to open the programming with and without The Wallflowers.

Billed as the ‘No Security’ Tour, the Stones sought out smaller venues to perform in on this particular tour.

I may be an anomaly, but I much prefer the Dead’s studio music to their long, rambling jams. We play plenty of ‘Live Dead’ concerts here (we’re taking a break from that Saturday night tradition, but we’ll get back to it) for our Deadheads, but today it’s from the studio.

This great live performance is new to the station. We’ve never aired it before. Townes Van Zandt, although not as ‘big’ as Bob Dylan, is often mentioned in the same breath as Dylan when it comes to songwriting. Listen in and see why.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of the I-Threes

As I’m learning, many people don’t know who the I-Threes are. They are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths and they are the most influential female band in Reggae and Ska who provided the background voices for Bob Marley & The Wailers. They also recorded albums individually, so today, we enlighten those who have never before heard them sing. It’s a treat.

7:00 p.m. Blind Faith Live at The Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA, August 16, 1969

Blind Faith were an English supergroup featuring Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. They weren’t around for very long, only for one album and one extended summer tour. We’ve got one of those performances from that tour for you today. (I’m sure that the Earl Warren Showgrounds were used for more than music, but the thought of a psychedelic rock band performing at a venue named after a Supreme Court judge makes me chuckle.)

We’re here no matter how damned tired we are because we have The Music Mermaid and she is large and in charge. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) totally free to the listening public. You don’t need a subscription. You don’t need a credit card, and we don’t even want to know your name. We just want you to listen.

It was that kind of time in music. Everyone was hanging out together (in and out of relationships), many in Laurel Canyon where those echoes were heard all around the world. This is a classic, folks.

Join us, and I don’t mean that literally because we don’t require you “joining” or “subscribing” to anything. We mean “joining” as in tuning us in with your neighbors around the world because, no matter what the GOP tells you, we don’t all have to speak the same language to appreciate good music.

It’s A Beatles Kind of Day As We Close Out The Month; We’ve Also Got The Wilburys With the AOW, and Our ‘On The Map’ Playlist Later, Thursday, September 30, 2021

Good Morning, Beatles Lovers (and I, for one, am one)! It’s a Beatles kind of day here today in The Mermaid Lounge, and with good reason! Read on!

In spite of the rumors, The Beatles were still loose and enjoying each other at the end.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Let It Be Sessions

October is a big month. The 50th Anniversary 5-CD set of Let It Be will be released on October 15 replete with remixes (McCartney was unhappy with Phil Spector’s versions of some of the songs; and I agree), outtakes, alternate versions, and other goodies. Peter Jackson’s six-hour Let It Be documentary will be released on October 15 as well, with the companion book, The Beatles: Get Back, coming on October 12.

We’ve had this little gem for a while now and have played it before. We thought this would be an appropriate way to kick out the September jams as we get ready for October.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One

Back with our next-to-last airing of this great album. October will also be Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. And you’ll hear plenty of the Wilburys as well during this time.

It has been a long time between airings for this playlist, so we are more than overdue for some of Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Before Jeff Lynne (and after, actually) was a Wilbury and a producer of Tom Petty’s albums, he was the front man for a band called The Move (we will play some material from them later this week), and ELO. We put his time with ELO In The Spotlight today.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live in ’75: The Rolling Thunder Revue

We continue our celebration of the birthday boy’s 80th year with a selection of Rolling Thunder Revue live music, vintage 1975. Later this week, we go back even further into the archives.
