Programming for Sunday, September 1, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s September, and we are now well on our way to our winter of discontent. Here is your scheduled programming today, including a sweet new playlist from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Petty

10:00 a.m.   Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton, Live from Madison Square Gardens (2008)

Their combined musical legacy includes Cream, Traffic, Derek & The Dominoes, The Spencer Davis Group, and Blind Faith. Together, they’re a force of nature.

1:00 p.m.     Abby Martin: Propaganda and Consent for Empire

4:00 p.m.    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: “Live” and Loving It!

Someone once told me that if you haven’t experienced the Heartbreakers “live” and in concert, you haven’t experienced  the Heartbreakers. I have found that to be quite true. They were road warriors, and it shows.

7:00 p.m.    Orson Welles and the Original Reading of “War of the Worlds” (1938)

Nothing could be more frightening that what’s actually going on here in America right now, but back in 1938, this scared the living shit out of plenty of people.

10:00 a.m.   Stephen Stills: Just Roll Tape (April 26, 1968)

Here’s some musical trivia for you. Did you know that Stephen Stills taught Jimi Hendrix how to play guitar? True story, people. Rumors abound in the music world, however. And rumor has it that this little masterpiece was recorded while Stills was at a Judy Collins recording session. He simply told someone to “just roll tape.” And voilá.

1:00 p.m.   Orson Welles: The Original Broadcast of War of the Worlds (10/30/1938)

Yep. This is the one. The original radio broadcast that scared the living shit out of millions of Americans. Let’s do this in honor of the “storming” of Area 51, which has morphed into a fucking party. (You knew that would happen. This is America.)

4:00 p.m.   The Allman Brothers Band: Play All Night, Live at The Beacon Theater

The big boys of Southern rock.

8:00 p.m.   Howard Zinn: The Three Holy Wars

Howard Zinn will tell you that there are three wars you don’t ever criticize in America: The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, and World War II.
