When Linda Ronstadt first left Tucson for LA to make music, she met Bobby Kimmel who proposed they start a band. Then came Kenny Edwards (who would become an integral part of her solo career band). Thus, The Stone Poneys were born. The rest, as they say, is musical history as Linda Ronstadt forged an amazing career that earned her the title ‘The Queen of Rock’ in a male-dominated world. These early days are often forgotten, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge as we give you a brand new Spotlight featuring her days as a Stone Poney.

Today we intro Stevie Wonder as our featured singer-songwriter for the week. When he first started out, he was called “Little” Stevie Wonder because he was just eleven years old when he signed his first contract with Tamla Records, and just thirteen years old when his first No. 1 hit, Fingertips, was released. Wonder is widely recognized as a pioneer and major influencer in many musical styles, including rhythm & blues, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide and has won 25 Grammy awards. You can read more about Stevie Wonder here.

Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Creedence Clearwater Revival With Our New AOW and Volume Two of The ‘Sixties Rotation’ EPs, November 27, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! The sun is already out here and we’ve got an easy day going today with some great music from the first generation of classic rockers with Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ for five uninterrupted hours this afternoon.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

CCR, as they are popularly known, was a force in 1969, releasing three albums. Green River was one of those releases, and it gave us some great songs including the hits Bad Moon Rising and Green River, which both peaked at No. 2 on the charts. The songs Lodi and Commotion were also fan favorites, although they didn’t reach the chart status of the first two. John Fogerty was the creative force behind CCR, and he disliked the long, acid-infused jams popular at the time. CCR bucked the norm and preferred the tightly structured roots music that would actually make them famous. We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we believe they’ve never made a bad song.

Here we are at the second phase of our Sixties absorption, which mostly focuses on the mid-to-late musical portion of that decade. Today, we celebrate (albeit, belatedly) the 79th birthday of Mick Jagger, born on July 26, 1943. The Stones were founded in 1962 in London, England and have been on the music scene for six decades. That’s what I call staying power.

We’ve seen a great metamorphosis over the last month, with more and more people from the U.S. joining our international listeners. Let’s keep that up. We bring back Bobbie Gentry this week with her ambitious concept album, The Delta Sweete, a musical projection of life in her ancestral home of Chickasaw County, Mississippi. She went into the studio in 1967, and the album was released in 1968. The Beatles had already released their amazingly epic concept album, Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, and other artists joined in as well, including The Moody Blues, The Kinks, and The Beach Boys, to name a few. Frank Sinatra even did it in the 50s. Few understand how talented Bobbie Gentry truly was because she remained low key throughout her short career. We hope you enjoy this one.

We did several of these last year, but this is the first one we’ve done this year. The album itself was released on April 27, 1987. The single Jammin’ Me, written by Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, was released on April 18, 1987. It would go to no. 1 on The Billboard charts, and piss Eddie Murphy off. Neither Petty nor Dylan would back down. You simply don’t mess with Dylan’s lyrics.

Donovan was a very big part of the sixties sounds, so his presence in the spotlight today is particularly fitting. His unique sound came from fusing pop, jazz, folk, psychedelic rock and world music. He was a favorite when I was young, and remains so today.

In a few hours, I’ll be digging myself out and heading off to work. But if you don’t have to be anywhere today, this would be a great day to tune us in. All you have to do is give us a shot. And we’re not talking about buying a subscription that you can “cancel anytime.” Don’t you love that shit? We do not require a credit card or a subscription here. The only thing you must have is an Internet connection. End of story.
