Sunday Brings Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic”, Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and More of Those Badass Guitarists, March 3, 2024

It’s Sunday Funday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we intro our new 50th birthday LP from Steely Dan, give you ‘Travelin’ Fever’ and volume two of Badass Guitarists.

Here’s your Sunday funday lineup:

Steely Dan’s third studio album was released on February 20, 1974 and became both a critical and commercial success. The single Rikki Don’t Lose That Number was the biggest single hit of the band’s career, but in my mind it wasn’t the only ‘hit’ on the album. Night By Night and With A Gun are pretty damned spectacular. Happy 50th!

1:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

More songs from the road from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep At The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Buffalo Springfield, Loggins & Messina, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, Ray Charles, the Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and more!

8:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists

Yes. Various artists who may not be the singers of the songs. You’ll hear the handiwork of Duane Allman, Albert Lee, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, Andrew Gold, John Fogerty, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and more!

Here’s your Friday Funday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Paint It Black: Various Artists

Time to crank this one up: Songs with the color black in the title, lyrics or both with The Rolling Stones (of course), The Beatles, The Move, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, James Brown, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, Them, Long John Baldry, Fairport Convention, Dr. John, The Kinks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Laura Nyro, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, Linda Ronstadt, Jethro Tull and more!

4:00 p.m.  Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Delbert McClinton FINAL AIRING!

Delbert McClinton takes his final spin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter. On Monday, we will introduce another!

I’ll bet some people don’t even know her name, but they just might recognize her voice. She had one very big hit here in the U.S. called Just One Look, which she also co-wrote. But Doris Troy never found an artistic footing in the U.S. for some unnamed reason. She did, however, find her mojo in the UK where she found she was a favorite of a guy named George Harrison, who signed her to a contract with Apple Records. He even gave her an office with a piano at Apple Records, and she spent time writing music with George and Ringo. Give her a listen. You’ll like her.

Friday Brings Psychedelia With Our Multi-Artist EP and The Beatles; Becker & Fagan in Between, November 24, 2023

We’re back with some great psychedelic music courtesy of Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: Walter Becker & Donald Fagan FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of the great music these two guys made as part of Steely Dan, surely one of the absolute best bands of the seventies and eighties.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles: Tripping The Light Fantastic

We close out with a dose of Beatles psychedelic music. As with so many other genres, the Beatles led the way here as well. In fact, Paperback Writer and Rain (the latter being the B-side of Paperback Writer), included in this playlist are considered the forerunners of the psychedelic future we’d all experience.

Get on board The Psychedelic Express, folks. You don’t need no stinkin’ tickets or a credit card. Just push the button below.

Saturday Brings Elvis’ AOW, Our ‘Under The Influence’ EP and Walter Becker-Donald Fagan as Our Singer-Songwriters, November 18, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! Yes, it’s finally Saturday and The Music Mermaid has her selections all queued up for this fine day. Read on for the details!

Here are your musical details:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Elvis’ debut album today, a fine piece of music from what I personally consider his best time, right around 1956 and the Nashville/Sun sessions. Tomorrow, we’ll have a new album.

12:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Ah, yes. In my youth, some of my best times were spent under the influence. Today, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

There’s a thing out there on social media asking the best bands of the seventies. Had it not been for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Steely Dan would have been my number one. They’re a very close number two. We love them here in The Mermaid Lounge, and they are that good because of the singer-songwriter duo that put them on the map.

We Have New ‘Live” Music by The Band, Bob Marley as Our Singer-Songwriter and Our ‘Foodies Only’ Playlist, Friday, October 6, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are now just one day away as we start out the day with a brand new-to-the-station performance by The Band. We move on from there!

Here’s Friday’s lineup:

Another great performance by a great band from day one recorded during The Band’s December 1971 one-week residency at New York’s Academy of Music. It includes songs from a New Year’s Eve performance featuring guest Bob Dylan. Not to be missed.
