Monday’s Back With Our ‘Friends of Mine’ EP, a Curtis Mayfield ‘Spotlight’ and Live Warren Zevon, January 13, 2025

Good morning, music lovers! We’re back to another Monday, but the music is just fine here in The Mermaid Lounge. Great way to start the week with an EP that’s been on a short hiatus!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Friends of Mine: Various Artists

We start it up with Open Stream With a Theme about friends, both good and bad, with The Guess Who, Willie Nelson, War, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Todd Rundgren, Amy Winehouse, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, John Brine, Joan Baez, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Beatles, The Byrds, Carole King, Steppenwolf, Paul McCartney, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Loggins & Messina, Free, Leon Russell, Talking Heads, Robert Johnson, Argent and more!

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Curtis Mayfield

An extraordinary singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer known as the “Gentle Genius.” Mayfield is recognized as one of the most influential and socially-conscious African American musicians in popular music, first known to the public as the leader of The Impressions during the civil rights movement.

8:00 p.m. Warren Zevon Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK, January 25, 1988

We close out the Monday programming with a live performance by the late, great Warren Zevon at Hammersmith Odeon in London.

One more time: We’re totally free of charge (no strings) and completely free of commercial advertising. We’re not here to make money. We’re here to play the greatest music on the planet. The button is below.

It’s Midweek and We’re ‘Under The Influence’ With The Beatles and The Supergroups, Wednesday, January 8, 2025

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to the middle of the week. Tomorrow we’ll be heading for the weekend once again! We have a great Wednesday lineup.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Being under the influence is the subject of many a song as evidenced by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Talking Heads, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Foreigner, Jonathan Edwards, John Lee Hooker, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m. Trippin’ With The Beatles

This afternoon we explore The Beatles psychedelic catalogue, an extraordinary journey. Did you know that Paperback Writer is considered one of the earliest examples of a psychedelic song?

8:00 p.m. Sounds of The Supergroups, Volume One: Various Artists

Tonight we close it out with the Supergroups, like Cream, Blind Faith, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Highwaymen, The Super, Super Blues Band (Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf & Bo Diddley), Manassas, and two of the best damned supergroups of all time, Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris) and our faves, The Traveling Wilburys. You know, nobody ever speaks of Trio as a supergroup, at least not the music media which still entrenched in misogyny, but that is exactly what Trio was.

Like I said earlier, we’re headed for the weekend after today, and we aim to get you there in style. We’re on 24/7 with no commercial interruption. Ever. The button is below.

On Saturday It’s ‘The Female Species’ EP, Live Jackson Browne and The Marshall Tucker Band, December 4, 2025

Good morning, Weekenders! Today we give you songs about women, some vintage live Jackson Browne and a Marshall Tucker Band ‘Spotlight’ feature!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

We start out with songs about women, girls, chicks, dames…you get the picture. There are many from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orlchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac (the original Mac), America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Linda Ronstadt and more!

We’ve got some great live Jackson Browne this afternoon, a show I actually attended back in the day. I had no idea it had been recorded and found it quite by accident searching for something else. We have it for you today.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Marshall Tucker Band

Found in South Carolina in 1972, I consider this band the best of the post-Allman Brothers Southern rock bands. Charlie Daniels doesn’t get airplay here. He was a racist asshole and a homophobe. I don’t much like Skynyrd’s attitude either. Interestingly, the band’s name came from a blind piano tuner whose name was found on a key to their original rehearsal space. Today, we have them ‘In the Spotlight’.

We’re here 24/7 with absolutely no commercial interruption and no chatty DJ’s who like to hear themselves talk so much that they talk through the beginning and the end of songs. We leave that to others. See for yourselves. The button is below.

We’re ‘Under The Influence’ at Midweek, Then It’s Lukas Nelson & POTR and Live John Hiatt, Wednesday, December 11, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. We’re at midweek here in the Boston area with driving rain and temps in the sixties. Ridiculous. But in The Lounge it’s quite comfortable and there’s great music coming your way!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Hey, we’ve all been here. No denying it. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Talking Heads, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Foreigner, Jonathan Edwards, John Lee Hooker, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

The music pedigree runs deep in the Nelson family. Although technically defunct, POTR was a great little country-rock band and did a fine job on the road with Neil Young.

8:00 p.m. John Hiatt Live at The Bottom Line, New York, NY, October 7, 1988

We close it out today with singer-songwriter John Hiatt in a fine performance at New York’s Bottom Line.

Blah. Blah. Blah. We’ll take a break from our usual closing. Suffice it to say that it’s a great day to hunker down and listen to some great music. The button is below.

Today It’s ‘The Female Species’ EP, Peter Tosh and Volume Two of Those Badass Guitarists, Thursday, December 5, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to The Mermaid Lounge. Today we start with songs about women, ladies, dames, chicks, girls…you get the picture. Some are fictional. Some not. And some may not be mentioned by name!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

Songs about women from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Peter Tosh

An original founding member of The Wailers who then went on to launch a successful solo career takes the Spotlight this afternoon. A Lounge favorite.

8:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists

Guitar handiwork from Chuck Berry, George Harrison, Neil Young, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, Brian May, Bo Diddley, Taj Mahal, Andrew Gold and more!

We’re one step closer to the weekend today. Slowly but surely we’ll get there, and it’ll be a bit easier if you’ve got good music for your journey. The button is below, folks.

The world’s second best supergroup takes to the stage at Wembley, vintage 1874.

We’re ‘Under The Influence’, Then It’s Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band, and Later We Remember John Lennon On His Birthday, Wednesday, October 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’re going to be ‘Under The Influence’ for several hours before we move on to our other programming!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

We’ve all been here, whether the ‘influence’ of choice is legal or not. You’ll hear The Byrds, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Jimmy Hendrix, Steely Dan, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Talking Heads, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Foreigner, Jonathan Edwards, John Lee Hooker, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band Live at The Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley, CA, August 3, 1986

Emmylou Harris has always managed to either pull together great bands, or team up with great bands. This time around she teams up with Chris Hillman’s Desert Rose Band for a great show.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

We close with a celebration of Lennon’s life and musical legacy as we celebrate what would have been his 83rd birthday today.

We make things simple here. All you have to do is use the button below to experience musical nirvana. We’re totally free. We do not request any personal information. We do not run commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. Try it. The magic button is below.

On Thursday It’s ‘The Female Species’ EP, a Kris Kristofferson Tribute and Another Trip to Love Street, on October 3, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and we are now officially on the downslide to the weekend. We’ve got a tribute to the late, great Kris Kristofferson sandwiched in between a couple of great multi-artist playlists!

Here’s your musical mojo:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

This one is songs about women, not necessarily by women (although some most definitely are). You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, The Temptations and more!

This afternoon we honor Kris Kristofferson’s musical legacy with a concert at Philharmonic Hall. He even brings along a few friends, like Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge and Larry Gatlin.

We’ve got Volume Two this evening, with Dave Mason, Grin, Gene Clark, Jimmy Webb, Rick Nelson, David Crosby, Tim Buckley, Frank Zappa, Steppenwolf, Glen Campbell, Hoyt Axton, The Turtles, Stephen Stills, Poco and more!

We’re on the case 24/7 with no commercial interruptions and no overly-chatty DJ’s who like to cut off the openings and closings of songs. We promise. And we also promise that there’s no charge for your time in The Mermaid Lounge. The button is below.

Monday’s Back With a New Talking Heads Spotlight, Then Live Mudcrutch and The Magnolia Sisters, September 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to the work week once again. Today we’ve got a brand new Spotlight featuring Talking Heads for starters. It doesn’t end there!

Here’s Monday’s musical lineup:

Yes, it’s one of our few trips into the 1980’s, even though I found the whole ‘big suit’ thing mildly disturbing at some level. Despite that suit, Stop Making Sense was one of the finest concert films ever made. Little Creatures was one of the finest albums ever made. The sixties and seventies we love; the eighties not so much but these folks definitely made the cut. We’ve got a brand new Spotlight feature for them today.

4:00 p.m. Mudcrutch: The 2016 Tour Best Live Performances

This is a great compilation of songs from Mudcrutch’s 2016 tour and includes the most incredible live performance of Hungry No More (my favorite Mudcrutch song) which was recorded at Boston’s House of Blues. I have two huge regrets in my musical life. Missing this concert was one of them. (The other was missing The Heartbreakers 2017 tour, which would be their last before Tom Petty passed.)

8:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters Live at The Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, Rancho Santa Suzanna Community Park, Simi Valley, CA, May 23, 2015

It doesn’t surprise me that you probably don’t know this band. They do not play in the top ten, or even in the standard popular music arena. They are the only all-woman authentic Cajun Band led by legendary Ann Savoy, and they are amazing. We are definitely fans of Cajun/Zydeco music here in The Mermaid Lounge and these ladies deliver.

This is a pretty eclectic lineup today and it plays uninterrupted by commercial advertising. Expand your musical horizons. It won’t cost you a thing. The button is below.

Sunday Funday Brings Warren Zevon, Our ‘Under The Influence’ EP and Live Brandi Carlile, September 8, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! It’s Sunday in The Lounge and we’ve got a great lineup for you that includes our first ‘live’ performance from Brandi Carlile!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

We lost one of the greatest singer-songwriters in music on September 7, 2003. Warren Zevon was not only a great performer in his own right, but he was a man whose music was recorded by many other artists. Today we pay him tribute by putting him In The Spotlight.

Today we feature our first live performance by singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. She appears in concert here with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

5:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

We take a trip through the evening with five hours of music that is about being under the influence of various stimulants, some legal and some not.

It’s a day of rest, and the weather is beautiful here in the Boston area. The sun is shining and it’s actually just a bit chilly this morning. A great day to kick back and listen to some great music! The button is below.
