Spend Your Day With a Carly Simon Spotlight, The Trio Sessions, and The Doors Live on Friday, September 27, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We are one day from the official weekend and we’ve got a Carly Simon Spotlight feature and live Doors wrapped around Ronstadt-Parton-Harris’s Trio Sessions.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

9:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Carly Simon

This incredible singer-songwriter rose to fame during the seventies with her string of 13 Top 40 hits, including You’re So Vain (which is not about Jagger, but about Warren Beatty, apparently), Anticipation, The Right Thing To Do, and Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. Today we put her In The Spotlight to start things off.

12:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris: The Trio Sessions

Nobody calls this alignment a “supergroup” for some reason, but it surely is and we always do. All three of these brilliant women had already embarked on incredibly successful solo careers before they got together for two of the best albums ever made. Today, we have the Trio Sessions that includes outtakes and alternative versions, among other things. Enjoy.

6:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation: Volume Two

We take you through the evening with volume two of our Sixties Rotation, focusing on the mid-to-late part of the decade with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, The Yardbirds, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, B. B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, The Doors, The Box Tops, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival and more!

We’re here 24/7 with absolutely no commercial interruption. We’re also totally free with no hidden charges, no passwords, no credit cards required. The button is below. See for yourself. Go ahead. You know you want to.

Today We’ve Got Live Jefferson Airplane, the ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP, and J.D. Souther, Friday, September 20, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re on the cusp of the weekend here and we’ve got some great music lined up, including our tribute to the brilliant John David Souther.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

We’ve got one of the most iconic sixties bands to open things up, this time from The Fillmore East.

1:00 p.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was a great two decade music cross-fertilization project and it produced music that was the first to challenge the British Invasion music dominating the American charts. In fact, they heard it in Britain and it immediately took hold. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of John David (J.D.) Souther

Speaking of the Laurel Canyon generation and those who pioneered country-rock, we sadly lost J.D. Souther on September 17, just about a week before he was scheduled to hit the road with Karla Bonoff. Souther was a songwriting legend, whose songs were tickets to fame for The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, among others. Today, we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

We’re here 24/7 with no commercial interruption, and we’ve got some of the most eclectic programming on the planet. The button is below.

It’s ‘Live’ Steely Dan, a Beach Boys Spotlight, and Volume Five of The All-Girl Revue on Friday, September 6, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We are on the cusp of the weekend and we’ve got three great pieces of programming for you today, starting with some new ‘live’ music from one of our favorites, Steely Dan!

Here’s your end-of-the-work-week lineup:

Undoubtedly one of the best bands to come out of the seventies. This was a stop on their very ambitious Art Crimes Tour, and many consider this performance one of their best-ever shows. Give it a listen.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Beach Boys

We haven’t cued this one up in a while. Is there a better band that signifies the sounds of summer? We don’t think so. And then, there’s the genius of Brian Wilson.

8:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue: Various Artists

We had a handful of these shorter shows from the ladies and, eventually, we rolled them into ‘Ladies Day Out’ and added even more! These come in handy when we need a fix. You’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Jackie DeShannon, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins and more!

I’m here listening with you until retail hell calls, when The Music Mermaid will take over and help you through the afternoon. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. And there’s absofuckinglutely no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music.

Midweek Brings ‘The Female Species’, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Live Allman Brothers Band, Wednesday, September 4, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to the midweek hump! We’ll help you cross over to the downslide to the weekend in style with some fine music!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

Not songs by women, but about women from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Linda Ronstadt and more!

Today we finally get around to a playlist for undoubtedly the most iconic band from the great sixties folk revival, formed in New York City back in 1961.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at A & R Studios, New York, New York, August 26, 1971

We close out the programming with a great live in-studio performance by The Brothers. Always a treat.

We’re not just playing great music when we have programming. We are on 24/7 with our big, wide Open Stream! And we’re free of charge and free from commercial interruptions!

The Weekend Begins With ‘What’s In a Name’, Then It’s Maria Muldaur and Townes Van Zandt on Saturday, August 17, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and name droppers! We’ve got a great day of music in store starting with our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s In A Name: Various Artists

Have we got name droppers for you today! Some of the folks they sing about are real. Some are not. Do you know the difference? You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur’s career began during the great sixties folk music revival, but she didn’t stop there as her musical style encompasses folk, blues, early jazz, gospel, country and R&B. Give a listen.

We close with a brand new live show from one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time without question.

Songs About ‘Water, Water Everywhere’, a Don McLean Spotlight and Emmylou Harris Saves The Day, Thursday, August 15, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We’re headed for the weekend and we’ve got a great lineup in store for you today, including the concert that saved the Ryman!

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Songs about the element that occupies 71% of our planet from Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Tom Rush, Donovan, America, Johnny Rivers and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Don McLean

You might remember him best from his epic anthem American Pie, but Don McLean was so much more than that. He released more than 40 gold and platinum records over his career.

8:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers Live at The Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, April 30-May 2, 1991

This most excellent concert from Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers saved and transformed the iconic Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry.

Join us. We’re not kidding. We don’t cost a dime and we make it so easy that it’s ridiculous. We’re not interested in your credit card number or your personal information. We won’t bombard you with emails. All you need to do is hit the button below.

We’re At Midweek With Our ‘House’ EP, the Band Called Love In The Spotlight, and Surf Music! Wednesday, July 3, 2024

Good morning, surfer dudes and dudettes…and everyone in between. We are kicking off summer this week here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’re beginning a Summer of Love celebration tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This was one of our very first (and small) playlists that grew into our little musical manifesto. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, T. Rex, The Beatles, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, The Association, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, Phil Ochs, Janis Joplin, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone and more!

Nope. Not music about love. But music from the band named Love, one of the best of the sixties bands that you may not even know. It was Tom Petty who got me started on Love. It was not an intuitive discovery. If you have heard of them, then congratulations! If you haven’t, give a listen.

8:00 p.m. Going To Surf City: Various Artists

Surfer music is a musical genre all its own, and we haven’t spun this one in forever, so it’s time to break it out. You’ll hear The Beach Boys, Dick Dale & His Deltones, The Trashmen, The Challengers, Jan & Dean, The Surfaris, The Chantays, The Blue Stingrays and more! And here we have another connection to Tom Petty. The Blue Stingrays are essentially The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty, playing some of the coolest surfer music on record, and led by one of the best guitarists on the planet, Mike Campbell.

On Saturday It’s Songs About Water, Christine McVie In The Spotlight, and Live Townes Van Zandt, June 15, 2024

We kick off the weekend in style with our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP, a Christine McVie Spotlight feature and Townes Van Zandt performing live in the UK.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

You’d be amazed at how many songs there are with water in the title, lyrics or both. Just ask Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Tom Rush and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Christine McVie

The heart and soul of Fleetwood Mac was, undoubtedly, Christine McVie…at least in my mind. Before the Mac, she was in a British blues band called Chickenshack and was the legendary Christine Perfect. We explore all those avenues today.

8:00 p.m. Townes Van Zandt Live at Union Chapel, London, UK, April 29, 1994

We close out the programming with truly one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time in Townes Van Zandt.

We’re here and we’re ready to go right off the bat at 9:00 a.m. We’re totally free of charge 24/7 and we do not run commercial advertising. What’s not to love? Use the button below.

King, The Doors, Marvin Gaye and more!

We’re in the Wayback Machine as we head for Copenhagen to hear the Airplane this afternoon.

Then, we’re back in the Wayback Machine for a bit of a jam at the iconic Cafe Au Go Go with Jimi Hendrix joined by Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop and Harvey Brooks.

It’s an all-Sixties programming kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’re on 24/7, so we’ll have all that great wide Open Stream before, in between and after.

Saturday is For ‘Water, Water Everywhere’, Bob Marley & The Wailers and The Stone Poneys, April 13, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to the official weekend, brought to you by the Labor Movement. We’ve got a great lineup for you today for sure, so stick around.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

4:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany, June 13, 1980

There are only two Jamaican musicians in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Jimmy Cliff is one. This guy is the other; the man who made Reggae accessible to the entire world. Today we’ve got him recorded live in Dortmund for Rockpalast.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Stone Poneys Featuring Linda Ronstadt

Who knew that when she left Tuscon and went out to L.A. to hang out and make music with Bobby Kimmel and Kenny Edwards that she would turn into the Queen of Rock for two solid decades. This evening we’ve got the beginnings of the amazing career of Linda Ronstadt.

Join us today as we spread the musical around the globe freely. We’re all about the music. There’s not much chatter. There is no commercial advertising. And there’s no need for your credit card or personal information. Give us a try.
