We’re at Week’s End With Our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP and Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight, Friday, March 25, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We continue now with our celebration of Women’s History Month as we put Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight, but we kick it off early with our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP!

We start the day off with a visit to Laurel Canyon and some musical memories!

Here’s today’s line-up:

9:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in music for two generations. It started in the sixties with bands like The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and The Mamas and The Papas, John Mayall, and spilled over into the seventies with Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and many more. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Manassas, Bonnie Raitt, John David Souther, Canned Heat, Harry Nilsson, Carole King, James Taylor and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin is one of those amazing singer-songwriters who has, somehow, flown under much of the radar out there for many years. She is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song, Sunny Came Home, but that’s not all she’s accomplished in her career. You can read more about Shawn Colvin right here. And best of all, if you don’t know much about her music, you can tune it in tonight and see for yourself.

Join your friends this morning. We’ve got listeners on from Chile, Greece, Italy, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Faroe Islands (they’re becoming regulars), Spain, Israel, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and France! We’re free. We accept no advertising, so there are no commercial interruptions, and we never ask you for personal information. What’s not to like?

We Spend Saturday With the Musicians of Laurel Canyon, Say Goodbye To “Meet The Beatles” and Hear LIVE DEAD! Later, February 26, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! We’ve got them on from all around the globe this morning, but our friends in Germany are far and away the most populous. We’ve got a great Saturday of programming lined up, so let’s not waste any time.

Today we spend time with the musical pioneers of the Laurel Canyon scene.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

For two generations of musicians (the 60s and 70s), Laurel Canyon was the place to be. It was a commune of creative activity, with all of these guys feeding off each other musically to create some of the most amazing sounds and songs in popular music history. You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt, Canned Heat, The Eagles, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and more! This is just about five hours of uninterrupted music.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Meet The Beatles by The Beatles FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell today to our Album of The Week, what I call the musical shot heard ’round the world. During his Musicares speech in 2017, Mr. Petty said when he heard The Beatles for the first time he had his eyes opened, like everybody else. We agree. Tomorrow, however, we will have a new selection.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore East, New York, January 2, 1970 NEW!

We have featured several of The Dead’s road performances from the Fillmore West, but this is our first airing of a show from The Fillmore East, a venue that certainly doesn’t get as much attention as it’s West Coast counterpart, but a great venue that hosted some amazing acts as well. It was part of that cross-pollination project. This is another new soundboard recording. Enjoy.

Saturday is always a good day here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one is no exception. Hey, I have to serve the retail masses, but we’ve got you covered. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor retail will break our stride. The Music Mermaid is in charge, baby, and she’s on top of this shit. So, tune us in. You don’t need a subscription or a credit card or anything else. Just a computer.

We’ve Hit Our Midweek Stride With Our ‘Are You Ready For the Country’ EP, and Tom Rush In The Spotlight, Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Yes, we’re at midweek. It’s all downhill from here, as they say. We’ve got a great line up today as we wish Tom Rush a happy belated 80th birthday, and turn on the country spigot.

Real country. And country-rock. But no bad pop bands with fiddles here.

Here’s the midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

Tom Petty was a great musicologist. He once referred to the glut of bad country bands as ‘bad pop bands with fiddles.’ None of that shit here today as we give you a great EP of uninterrupted music. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Flying Burrito Brothers and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush turned 80 years young on February 8th and we’re finally wishing him a happy belated birthday. I saw him at his birthday bash in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (the place of his birth) when he turned 79 last year, and he was fantastic. Today, we put Tom Rush, the artist often credited with heralding in the era of the singer-songwriter, In the Spotlight.

Get on it, folks. This is the toughest day of the week, and we’ll help you get through it with some great music. No charge for the service. Honest. We’re not kidding.

We Hit Our Midweek Stride With ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ and Emmylou Harris & Spyboy ‘Live’ Later, Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists. We’ve got a pretty damned good line-up scheduled for today starting with those sweet Laurel Canyon sounds.

We’ve got that sweet Laurel Canyon sound today!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was musical paradise for two generations of innovators, and was a hotbed for the fusion that brought us country-rock, and inspired this great EP to get you through the midweek. The musicians who lived and played there, fed off each other creatively. Rumor has it that everyone loved partying with The Monkees. You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, The Doors, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Canned Heat, J.D. Souther, Carole King, James Taylor, America, and more!

7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1977

We go on the road with Emmylou Harris & Spyboy for the Wrecking Ball tour, what many consider Harris’ career-redefining album produced by Daniel Lanois. She took a minimalist approach with her band, bringing it back to basics. Spyboy consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums. As it turns out, Wrecking Ball is one of my all-time favorite Emmylou Harris albums.

Before, in between, and after we give you wide Open Stream on a 24/7 basis. We never stop, unless there is some kind of unfortunate Internet event. We haven’t had one yet. All you need to do is pull up a tab and press play.

Today We’ve Got New ‘Live’ Dr. John, Wendy Waldman In the Spotlight, and Drivin’ Songs Later, Monday, January 17, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s pouring rain and incredibly windy here in the Beantown area this morning. Makes me want to hunker down and listen to this great music we’ve planned.

We’ve got some great, live Dr. John music for you today from Ultrasonic Studios in New York!

Here’s Monday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Dr. John Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, New York, November 6, 1973 NEW!

A great 20-song performance New Orleans’ Nitetripper, broadcast live by WLIR-FM in Long Island. This was when FM radio was king and we had all those great simulcast events going on. You’ll be seeing more of these as we move through 2022, but do not miss this one today. Dr. John is a NOLA legend.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

Not only is Wendy Waldman a critically-acclaimed recording artists, she’s also recognized as a writer of multi-platinum songs for other artists, a producer, a teacher, and a working musician. In the early 70s, when folk-rock was coming into focus, she started a band called Bryndle with fellow artists Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. They made one unreleased album, and then went their separate ways. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Wendy Waldman went on to make several great albums. She became friends with Linda Ronstadt, singing back up on several songs and going on tour with Ronstadt. Karla Bonoff made her mark as a songwriter, while Kenny Edwards and Andrew Gold joined Linda Ronstadt. I consider Wendy Waldman one of the most underappreciated figures in popular music. Listen and you will too.

7:00 p.m. Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists

Driving and music somehow just go together, and I admit that many of the songs on this particular playlist give me ‘lead foot’ when I’m on the open road. I really do have to be careful when I’m cruisin’ and playin’ the radio with no particular place to go. You’ll see what I mean when you hear the Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Grateful Dead, The Eagles, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Chuck Berry, The Kinks, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Mudcrutch, Canned Heat, The Pretenders, The Byrds, Deep Purple, The Guess Who, Golden Earring, Little Feat, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt and many more.

The beginning of a new week is upon us, and great music always makes a Monday a bit easier to take. We’re here 24/7, totally free, I promise. No endless DJ chatter. No credit card required. Do it.

Today We Have Our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP on Tap, Along With The Band ‘Live’ in D.C., Friday, January 14, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s time once again for our country-country rock EP, and we give you a special treat later with The Band live in Washington, D.C. as broacast by the King Biscuit Flower Hour!

The Band: From Bob Dylan’s back-up musicians to one of the most influential bands in popular music.

Here’s your Friday musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country?: Various Artists

It’s coming around again! We’ve got a great EP for you today. It’s proving to be one of our most popular as well, and that comes as no surprise with this line-up: Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Band, Mudcrutch, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Eagles, and more!

7:00 p.m. The Band Live at The Carter Baron Amphitheater, Washington, D.C., July 17, 1976

Undoubtedly one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge. Starting as Bob Dylan’s back-up band, they went on to become one of the greatest bands of their generation, and one of the most influential as well. This is the stuff legends are made from, and we consider The Band in that category. This one was live from D.C. and broadcast on the legendary King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Before in between and after, we give you that great wide Open Stream. We’re here in the lounge where the music never stops. We’re 24/7 totally free, no credit card, no personal information required. All we want is for you to tune us in by clicking the button below.

We End the Week With a Trip to The Country (Via EP, Of Course), and Some ‘Live’ Hot Tuna Later, Friday, December 17, 2021

Good Morning, Countryologists! Hell, I’ve invented a new word again. I should have my own dictionary. Today we’ve got our ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ multi-artist EP and some great, live Hot Tuna later.

We are absolutely NOT talking about bad pop bands with fiddles here.

Here’s your pre-weekend line-up!

11:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country? Various Artists

Well, are you ready? We’re not fans of that “canned” country shit. We like the real deal, along with those who pioneered country-rock. In light of that, you’ll hear Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. You’ll also hear those who made country rock a reality, including The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, The Eagles, Neil Young, The Byrds, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle & The Dukes, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Band, Mudcrutch, and more! All without interruption.

7:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, California, March 4, 1988

Born from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Cassady (bassist) created this great blues rock band. While other members have come and gone over the years, the stalwarts have always been these guys. In fact, they’ll be celebrating Jorma’s 80th birthday in with a live performance at Carnegie Hall on April 22, 2022. There’s something to be said for the longevity of this generation of musicians for sure. That’s why we’re here.

One mo’ time: Before, after and in between we’re circulating 27,000+ songs and are completely at the whim of The Music Mermaid. She, as you well know if you’re listeners, has impeccable musical taste. Come on. You don’t need a thing to join in except a computer, a free tab, and an index (not middle) finger.

It’s an Eclectic Monday Here in The Mermaid Lounge with The Beach Boys, Some Great R & B, and The World Between Heaven & Hell, November 22, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a rather eclectic line-up for you all today as we kick off another work week, albeit a rather short one with the Thanksgiving Holidays coming up.

We put The Beach Boys In the Spotlight today!

Here’s your Moan-Day line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Beach Boys

It took me a long time to come around to The Beach Boys. It wasn’t until I heard people like Linda Ronstadt and Paul McCartney call Brian Wilson a musical genius that I started paying attention, and I realized they were right. Today we put them In the Spotlight so we can hear their blend of pop, rock, surf, and psychedelia.

3:00 p.m. DJ’s Choice: My Favorite R & B Stream

I probably would have about fifteen different R & B streams with different songs on each one if given the opportunity. But I don’t give myself that opportunity. On this one you’ll hear Al Green, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, The Four Tops, Sam Cooke, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Gladys Knight & The Pips, James Brown, Booker T & The MGs, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Ruffin and more!

7:00 p.m. Between Heaven & Hell: Various Artists

This was a fun one. Songs with references to either heaven or hell (or both) in either the lyrics or title (or both). Confused yet? Well, then tune this one in and hear Donovan, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Presley, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fats Domino, Foo Fighters, The Grateful Dead, and more!

Come on by. People from Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Australia, Japan, Russian Federation, Canada, and points beyond are already tuned in and enjoying the sounds! You can too. For free. Every single day.

It’s a Keep It Simple Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Today, With Our ‘Country’ EP and Warren Zevon’s “Excitable Boy” As Our AOW, October 10, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s a nice, relaxing Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got some great stuff for you today. We’re uncomplicating our lives here…and yours.

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon NEW!

You know, there’s lots of negative things to talk about where Warren Zevon is concerned. He burned a lot of bridges. He had his demons. But he was, very simply, one of the best singer-songwriters on the planet. Linda Ronstadt proved that several times over. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever made. I can’t find one throw-away song on it. Produced by Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, Zevon’s third studio album was released on January 18, 1978. Musicians who played on the album were some of the best-know studio musicians in the business in the 70’s including Russ Kunkel, Rick Marotta, and Mick Fleetwood taking turns on drums, and guitarists Danny Korchmar, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, John McVie, Leland Sklar, and Waddy Wachtel. Background vocals were provided by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and Kenny Edwards. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Are You Ready For the Country: Various Artists

We bring back our multi-artist EP of real country (not bad pop bands with fiddles) artists and the legends of country-rock. You’ll hear Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Asleep At The Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, The Eagles, Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pure Prairie League, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Band, The Byrds, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Mudcrutch and more!

It’s a great day to rest up after another work-a-day week and before the next one starts. If there’s a Big Guy up there, remember that this was also his day of rest. Dump the capitalism today and tune us in. Join our listeners from Australia, the UK, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russian Federation, Canada, South Africa, and parts unknown.
