Laurel Canyon was a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in music for two generations. It started in the sixties with bands like The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and The Mamas and The Papas, John Mayall, and spilled over into the seventies with Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and many more. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Manassas, Bonnie Raitt, John David Souther, Canned Heat, Harry Nilsson, Carole King, James Taylor and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin is one of those amazing singer-songwriters who has, somehow, flown under much of the radar out there for many years. She is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song, Sunny Came Home, but that’s not all she’s accomplished in her career. You can read more about Shawn Colvin right here. And best of all, if you don’t know much about her music, you can tune it in tonight and see for yourself.

You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. We bid a fond farewell today to our Album of The Week, what I call the musical shot heard ’round the world. During his Musicares speech in 2017, Mr. Petty said when he heard The Beatles for the first time he had his eyes opened, like everybody else. We agree. Tomorrow, however, we will have a new selection.

We have featured several of The Dead’s road performances from the Fillmore West, but this is our first airing of a show from The Fillmore East, a venue that certainly doesn’t get as much attention as it’s West Coast counterpart, but a great venue that hosted some amazing acts as well. It was part of that cross-pollination project. This is another new soundboard recording. Enjoy.

Saturday is always a good day here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one is no exception. Hey, I have to serve the retail masses, but we’ve got you covered. Today, we put Tom Rush, the artist often credited with heralding in the era of the singer-songwriter, In the Spotlight.

We go on the road with Emmylou Harris & Spyboy for the Wrecking Ball tour, what many consider Harris’ career-redefining album produced by Daniel Lanois. She took a minimalist approach with her band, bringing it back to basics. Spyboy consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums. As it turns out, Wrecking Ball is one of my all-time favorite Emmylou Harris albums.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s pouring rain and incredibly windy here in the Beantown area this morning. Makes me want to hunker down and listen to this great music we’ve planned.

We’ve got some great, live Dr. John music for you today from Ultrasonic Studios in New York!

A great 20-song performance New Orleans’ Nitetripper, broadcast live by WLIR-FM in Long Island. This was when FM radio was king and we had all those great simulcast events going on. You’ll be seeing more of these as we move through 2022, but do not miss this one today. Dr. John is a NOLA legend.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

Not only is Wendy Waldman a critically-acclaimed recording artists, she’s also recognized as a writer of multi-platinum songs for other artists, a producer, a teacher, and a working musician. In the early 70s, when folk-rock was coming into focus, she started a band called Bryndle with fellow artists Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. They made one unreleased album, and then went their separate ways. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Wendy Waldman went on to make several great albums. She became friends with Linda Ronstadt, singing back up on several songs and going on tour with Ronstadt. Karla Bonoff made her mark as a songwriter, while Kenny Edwards and Andrew Gold joined Linda Ronstadt. I consider Wendy Waldman one of the most underappreciated figures in popular music. Listen and you will too.

Driving and music somehow just go together, and I admit that many of the songs on this particular playlist give me ‘lead foot’ when I’m on the open road. I really do have to be careful when I’m cruisin’ and playin’ the radio with no particular place to go. There’s something to be said for the longevity of this generation of musicians for sure. That’s why we’re here.

You know, there’s lots of negative things to talk about where Warren Zevon is concerned. He burned a lot of bridges. He had his demons. But he was, very simply, one of the best singer-songwriters on the planet. Linda Ronstadt proved that several times over. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever made. I can’t find one throw-away song on it. Produced by Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, Zevon’s third studio album was released on January 18, 1978. Musicians who played on the album were some of the best-know studio musicians in the business in the 70’s including Russ Kunkel, Rick Marotta, and Mick Fleetwood taking turns on drums, and guitarists Danny Korchmar, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, John McVie, Leland Sklar, and Waddy Wachtel. Background vocals were provided by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and Kenny Edwards. Enjoy.
