Good morning, music lovers! Sundays are simple here: A couple of programs and our big, wide Open Stream. We start things off with another album celebrathing it’s 50th birthday.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This was Elton John’s eighth studio album, released in June of 1974. It was his fourth no. 1 album in the U.S. and his third in the UK. The critics didn’t like it much, but his fans sure did as it went double platinum. Do I think it’s his best? Nope. But there were more good than bad songs on this one, and I’m talking about good songs beyond the two singles: The Bitch Is Back (one of my favorite Elton John songs) and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Happy 50th Birthday, Caribou.

3:00 p.m.  The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

Speaking of the great Al Green, he takes his final spin today as our featured singer-songwriter. On Monday, we will have a brand new artist.

8:00 p.m.  In the Spotlight: The Music of Emmylou Harris

I was not a real country fan until I heard Linda Ronstadt. And it was Linda Ronstadt’s music that helped introduced me to Emmylou Harris. I heard Elite Hotel and I was hooked, and have been ever since. Emmylou Harris has deservedly won nearly every music accolade humanly possible. She helped continue to shape country music, while refusing to allow it to define her singing. Tonight she’s our Spotlight artist.

Yes, it’s Friday once again. We’ve nearly made it to the weekend. And what better way to get over the final line than right here with great music at absolutely no charge to anyone and with absolutely no commercial interruption?

‘M is For Motown’, Loggins & Messina and The McGarrigle Sisters Are All On Tap For Thursday, January 11, 2024

Morning, folks! We are on track for a great day here in The Mermaid Lounge with a trip to Motor City planned, our AOW, and some rare gems from Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  M is For Motown: Various Artists

We’ve got five hours of the music that made America dance with Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Edwin Starr, Eddie Holland, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Sittin’ In by Kenny Loggins & Jim Messina

Back again for another airing of what was first intended to be a solo album by Loggins, but became Loggins & Messina’s first album together.

7:00 p.m.  Tell My Sister: The Unreleased Recordings of Kate & Anna McGarrigle

We haven’t aired this one for a while, so this is a good time to break it out. This is a rare gem for fans of the McGarrigle sisters, two of the greatest singer-songwriters ever who became fertile ground for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Judy Collins and others. Their covers led to Kate & Anna McGarrigle getting their first recording contract.

Get on in here. The Mermaid Lounge is open to all and we’re open all night. What better day to head toward the weekend?

Saturday Brings ‘The Female Species’ EP, Emmylou Harris, and Jimmy Reed as Our Singer-Songwriter, December 30, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! It’s yet another gloomy, rainy day here in the Boston area with no real snow in sight. Ho. Hum. But, the good new is that the music is outstanding as we close out 2023 and head into a new year this weekend!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Female Species: Various Artists

Not songs by women (although some certainly are), but songs about women, ladies, chicks, girls…you get the idea here. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Evangeline by Emmylou Harris FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Evangeline today, one of the most underrated of Emmylou Harris’ albums. Seems that albums that are collections of just plain great songs isn’t enough these days. There must be a theme, or a message or…whatever. It’s music, man.

An unlikely ‘superstar’ of the blues world, singer-songwriter Jimmy Reed made the blues accessible to all. His unique voice and guitar style made him a favorite of blues fans and non-blues fans alike. Give a listen.
