Sunday Brings “Late For The Sky” As Our AOW Plus A Trip On ‘The Psychedelic Express’, January 21, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. Today we begin a run of albums that turn 50 years old in 2024, and we start with a great Jackson Browne release. Then, it’s a trip back in time on ‘The Psychedelic Express’.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne NEW!

Our first entry into the 50 Club is a great Jackson Browne LP released on September 13, 1974. It was Browne’s third studo release, and peaked at no. 14 on Billboard’s Pop Charts. In 2020, the album was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

The album would also continue to build Jackson Browne’s legend as a premier songwriter. The title track would be used in the Martin Scorcese film Taxi Driver. Both Fountain of Sorrow and Before the Deluge would be covered by Joan Baez. For A Dancer would be covered by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris on their Western Wall album.

Released on November 1, 1965, this is the first album where Smokey Robinson’s name was front and center. They went from The Miracles to Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. The album also includes four of the band’s Top 20 hits: Ooh Baby Baby, The Tracks of My Tears, Going To A Go-Go, and My Girl Has Gone.

The year 1975 was a very good year, especially for Linda Ronstadt. She had already released Don’t Cry Now in 1973, but 1974 was the year for Heart Like A Wheel and that album propelled Linda Ronstadt’s career into the stratosphere. She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request NEW!

Here we have The Rolling Stones with their 6th British and 8th American studio album released by Decca Records in December of 1967. The band moved away from its R & B roots and experimented with psychedelic sounds and instruments (Mellotron, sound effects, African rhythms, among others) and produced the album themselves. It too a while as their production was interrupted by drug use, court appearances and jail terms by members of the group. They managed, however, to make a very different album but still sound like The Rolling Stones.

This EP and the Album of The Week managed to just fall together nicely today as we present our long-player of mind-altering substances. Next to love and heartbreak, substance use was probably the favorite topic for music. Some of it was legal; a lot of it not. Released in 1966, this is Donovan’s most psychedelic album. It includes the iconic single Sunshine Superman, along with The Trip (no explanation required), his tribute to Jefferson Airplane with Fat Angel (which the Airplane later covered) and Season of The Witch, one of my all-time favorite songs. We’re traveling on this one for a week.

This is your day to tune in, turn on and drop out. It’s Sunday, a day of rest and relaxation. Take advantage of the good vibes by turning into a great radio station. Good Morning, Sixties Music Lovers! This is your day as Bobbie Gentry makes a return engagement with her innovative album, The Delta Sweete, and we bring on volume two of the Sixties Rotation.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Delta Sweete by Bobbie Gentry NEW!

We bring back Bobbie Gentry this week with her ambitious concept album, The Delta Sweete, a musical projection of life in her ancestral home of Chickasaw County, Mississippi. She went into the studio in 1967, and the album was released in 1968. The Beatles had already released their amazingly epic concept album, Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, and other artists joined in as well, including The Moody Blues, The Kinks, and The Beach Boys, to name a few. Frank Sinatra even did it in the 50s. Few understand how talented Bobbie Gentry truly was because she remained low key throughout her short career. We hope you enjoy this one.

The second portion of our Sixties obsession is upon us for another month. This EP covers mostly the mid-to-late sixties.
