Good morning, folk music lovers. We love this particular playlist here in the Lounge. Very eclectic and full of great classic folk along with musicians who have paid homage to the genre even while not calling themselves “folk singers.” See for yourself.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Goodbye and Hello by Tim Buckley NEW!

A lot of people don’t really know Tim Buckley. It took me a while to discover him as well. He was one of those singer-songwriters we call a changeling. He began his career in folk music but spread his wings into jazz, psychedelic, funk, soul, avant-garde and more, before dying at the age of 28 in 1975 from a heroin and morphine overdose. Goodbye and Hello was Buckley’s second studio album released in August of 1967 and is a combination of folk-rock and psychedelic-folk.

The question you have to ask yourself is what kind of folk music best suits you? Because it’s a deep-rooted musical style that has changed and evolved over the years without losing its basic identity. I remember when Dylan took it electric. It created quite a stir. I remember my first time seeing Warren Zevon live. It was at the Berkelee Performance Center in Boston, and he was two hours late for the show after making us suffer through 52 versions of Year of The Cat courtesy of Al Stewart, the opening act. We were foul of mood. That was, until Zevon got on stage and blew us all away. He was an extraordinary songwriter who broke onto the scene when someone named Linda Ronstadt started singing his songs. And Zevon had a great voice to boot. He may have been a self destructive character, but nobody can ever deny the man’s talents.

Here we have Dr. John’s debut album, released on January 22,1968. That’s when Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. introduced us to his alter-ego (that would be Dr. John), reportedly based on a 19th century voodoo doctor. The rest is history. Dr. John shows us his vision right off the top. This album is a great combination of New Orleans R & B and psychedelia. Fun Fact: The entire album was funded by money that Dr. John and his arranger made on Sonny & Cher sessions!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: John Lennon HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We manage, finally, to pull one of these off on the very day as we celebrate the birthday anniversary of John Winston Ono Lennon, one of the greatest rock n’ rollers of all time and a visionary in his own right. We have music from his days with the Beatles, his solo work and his work with the Plastic Ono Band. Join the birthday celebration tonight.

It’s a day of rest. For those of you who’ve got the religion, remember that even the big guy took a day off. You should as well. A repeat performance here by request from some of our Deadhead friends overseas. We haven’t played this particular soundboard since the end of 2020, so it’ll be just like new! Then again, no two performances were every the same for this band, not even on the same tour.

As you may (or may not) know, Jakob Dylan recently announced that there will be a brand new Wallflowers album for the first time in nine years. I just happened to catch a pre-release of one of the songs and it was great. It inspired me to make their 1992 debut release our Album of The Week this week. This is a pretty damned fine band. All songs were composed by Jakob Dylan with the exception of one, and he assisted on that one.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists
