We’re Heading For the Weekend With The Animals, Our ‘Repeat After Me’ Playlist, and Our Album of The Week, Thursday, September 15, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’re on the downslide to the weekend this morning, and we’ve got some great programming on the way!

We’ve got that great British blues-rock band, The Animals, In the Spotlight to start it all off!

Here’s Thursday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Animals

Nothing like a little Eric Burdon & The Animals to get the blood boiling early. Truly one of the most influential bands in the early days of blues-rock and part of The British Invasion. We love them here in The Mermaid Lounge. We give you this from a book on the subject:

The Animals, thanks in large part to Eric Burdon’s powerful, gritty vocals, were one of the most authentic-sounding rhythm and blues revival groups of the British Invasion. The band was also one of the few First Wave acts to make a successful transition from mainstream pop to progressive rock in the late 1960s.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Electric Music for The Mind and Body by Country Joe & The Fish

We’re on our next-to-last airing of this great psychedelic masterpiece. Saturday will be our final farewell as we move into a brand new psychedelic selection on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. Repeat After Me, Volume One: Various Artists

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and music provides plenty of proof. In this particular volume of Repeat After Me, you’ll hear Aretha Franklin sing Carole King, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers sing The Animals, Tracy Nelson sing Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris sing Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt sing Tom Petty, The Beatles sing Barrett Strong, and on and on. It’s a great concept because you get to hear the original and the reboot! Volume Two is tomorrow, and Volume Three is in the works!

This is a fine day to join the fun here in The Mermaid Lounge. We have programming for sure, but the bulk of our day is spent on our wide Open Stream of 27,000+ songs. It’s a challenge to hear a repeat any time during the week. Give us a shot. We’re also completely free, no surprises, no strings.

It’s a longer than usual AOW; almost like a concert. This is an amazing compilation of Neil Young’s opening acoustic set from his 1976 tour with Crazy Horse. This is our second airing. You definitely want to get this one in by Saturday.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Tracy Nelson has had a storied career and started out in band called Mother Earth. She’s sung some country-rock and a whole lot of blues. She also wrote one of my all-time favorite Linda Ronstadt tunes, Down So Low. We put Tracy Nelson in the spotlight tonight.

7:00 p.m. Muddy Waters Recorded Live at Harry Hope’s (Cary, IL) and The Masonic Auditorium (Detroit, MI), sometime in 1979 NEW!

The great Muddy “Mississippi” Waters recorded live at two different venues sometime while on the road in 1979. This one’s a bootleg.

Today, We Celebrate Ronstadt’s 76th Birthday Mixed in With All That Wide Open Stream, Sunday, July 17, 2022

Today we celebrate the 76th birthday of Linda Ronstadt, a woman whose indelible mark on music is legendary. From the very beginning, Linda Ronstadt made sure she was in charge of her own career, and she did a hell of a job with it. She defied those who wanted to pigeon-hole her sound to sing just about any damned thing she wanted.

She can no longer sing, but her music is timeless.

Here’s your musical landscape for today:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Hasten Down The Wind by Linda Ronstadt

This was a very tough selection. Like asking me to pick one singular favorite Linda Ronstadt song. But in the end, it made its case. Released in 1976, this was Ronstadt’s seventh studio album during a time when she was the undisputed Queen of Rock. (Some of us believe she still is, frankly.) Although the Laurel Canyon influence is all over this album, Linda Ronstadt switched gears on this one a bit and began to sing the songs of some new songwriters, like Karla Bonoff and Warren Zevon, who would soon be on the map. Two songs were also co-authored by Ronstadt, Try Me Again and Lo Siento Mi Vida, the latter being her first move into the Spanish sound.

The album became her third consecutive million-selling album, the first such feat by a female singer. Hasten Down The Wind earned Ronstadt a Grammy for the Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, in 1977, her second of 13 career Grammys. It was also the second of four country #1 albums for her.

I had the absolute pleasure of being at this show in 1995. I remember it well. It was a real treat to have two brilliant women on stage that night as the late, great Valerie Carter was the opening act and joined Ronstadt on stage for a couple of beautiful songs. The best thing about Linda Ronstadt is that she was never threatened by sharing the stage with others, male or female, and that she felt like she was better as part of a bigger whole…in spite of her amazing solo career. And this brings us to our final programming for the day.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Friends: Duets and More

We close out the day with a great playlist of songs where Ronstadt shares the limelight. She’s either a back-up singer or a duet singer on these songs, sharing the duties with the likes of Glenn Frey, Valerie Carter, J.D. Souther, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Bette Midler, Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Nicolette Larson, James Taylor, Hoyt Axton and others. A fitting ending to our birthday celebration.

We figure July 1987 is about as close as we’re getting. Either way, we know it happened, and you will too if you tune in tonight.

It’s tough to find a decent photo of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, believe me. We tried mightily but the best we could come up with was this poster. Etta James once called Nelson, “a bad white girl.” And she certainly is bad in the best sense of the word. One of the absolute best combinations in music happened when Ronstadt sang Tracy Nelson’s Down So Low, and you will hear Nelson’s version on this album. While Mother Earth is often presented as merely a vehicle for Nelson, that’s an unfair characterization. The band was more than that, and you’ll see that on this album.

Not to be confused with our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP. While we certainly include woman artists in this playlist, this one’s about the use of the word lady, girl, woman, chick, whatever the term, in the title, lyrics, or both. Recorded back in 1966, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton and the Muddy Waters Blues Band performed “in session” without the benefit of any rehearsal, and the result? Well, see for yourself. Big Mama Thornton was the original Hound Dog, baby. She sang with such passion she didn’t need rehearsal. And as for her backing band? They had enough skill to pull it off as you will see.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Southern Accents by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Our second airing of this week’s Album of The Week by The Heartbreakers is up today. This album may not have turned out as planned, but when it comes to our house band, it’s never a disappointment. A great collection of songs. My favorite after 37 years is still Rebels.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

The second half of our all-women bluesday comes from Tracy Nelson, a woman who has been around since her days with Mother Earth. That means 20 albums and five decades of music. Not to be missed.

Thirty-seven years ago yesterday, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their sixth studio album, which was considered a failure at least by the critics (not the fans). According to at least one critic, it was envisioned as a concept album that was “weighted down by its own ambitions.” When one looks at the songs cut from the album, you have to wonder why that decision was made, I must admit. Still, it’s The Heartbreakers, and it’s an album with several great songs, three of which were co-written with Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, including Don’t Come Around Here No More. But my favorite song on the album remains Rebels.

3:00 p.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

And then, there’s water…in the title, lyrics, or both. Water, a valuable resource that covers 71% of the planet we live on, is more than worthy of it’s own EP. And we’ve got it here.
