It’s Mudcrutch Monday, An AOW Repeat, and Warren Zevon & Jackson Browne’s Live Acoustic Set, October 12, 2020

Yesterday was an “off” day in The Mermaid Lounge. We had a bit of a Facebook meltdown as the great purge of dissident voices continues, but our music remains here for your listening pleasure. Today’s Tom Petty offering as we celebrate Petty Month is his stint with Mudcrutch.

Rick Rubin with Tom Petty and Johnny Cash during the recording of Unchained.

Here’s your Monday programming:

12:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, June 26, 2016

How many musicians have two successful bands? Well, Tom Petty did. In spite of his Heartbreakers’ success, he brought Mudcrutch — his original band that morphed into the Heartbreakers — back from the depths and they put themselves on the map. One of my biggest regrets is missing them at Boston’s House of Blues, where the best damned version of Hungry No More was recorded live. But hey, we do have their body of work, including this.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash NEW!

There was a reason why guys like Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne sought out Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. Johnny Cash was another. On his album, Unchained, he was backed by the Heartbreakers and produced by Petty’s producer, Rick Rubin. And unlike other Cash albums, this one featured only three of his own compositions, the rest were covers of others’ songs, including Tom Petty’s Southern Accents. Soundgarden’s Rusty Cage, and Beck’s Rowboat. It’s also rumored that he recorded Robert Palmer’s Addicted To Love, but it was never released. This album won Cash a Grammy. It’s a beauty.

(Yesterday was a rough posting day; this is a make-up airing!)

7:00 p.m. Warren Zevon & Jackson Browne, Live at VPRO Studios, December 8 1976

A live acoustic performance with two great singer-songwriters singing each other’s songs. There’s not much more you can say about this except that if you’re not tuning in, you’re missing a treat.

Well, here we are on a Monday (or Moan-Day,, depending upon houw you look at it). This is the perfect day to tune us in. We’re free, with no advertising and no hard sell. We also don’t spend most of the day talking into the mike.
