11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Although many have not heard of Tracy Nelson, she’s been around for quite some time. Since her career started, she has recorded more than 20 albums. Her first album, Deep Are The Roots, was an acoustic blues album recorded in Chicago and released in 1965. While in Chicago she met and learned from many blues icons, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Otis Spann. She also fronted a band called Mother Earth which shared the Fillmore concert stage with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Her signature song, Down So Low, was written and recorded by Nelson around the Mother Earth time, but has also been covered by Linda Ronstadt, Maria Mudaur, Ellen McIlwaine, and Etta James. Tune this woman in.

It’s an all-girl Tuesday Bluesday as we bring you a live bootleg performance of Janis with The Kozmic Blues Band live from The Netherlands. I was multi-tasking as I wrote today’s blog entry and I came across this article about Janis Joplin. I found it quite perceptive and thought I’d share it with you.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers NEW!

There have been many players in the evolution of what has come to be known as country-rock. This 1969 release, the first from The Flying Burrito Brothers, continued the work of two of the most notable musicians in this process, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, both veterans of The Byrds (who were also players). These guys married country to other forms of popular music, like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock, and it’s all on display here in this great new Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This one is due for an update soon, but it remains formidable as it is, as this first sixties EP focuses on early-to-mid music of the great generation. You’ll hear Sonny & Cher, The Monkees, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Drifters, Fats Domino, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Petula Clark, The Hollies, Buddy Holly, The Kinks, Neil Diamond, The Band, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, The Yardbirds, The Searchers, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, and more!

It’s Our Usual Busy Saturday with Stephen Stills & Manassas, Dusty Springfield, Otis Redding, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 6, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We run the gamut today, showing our musical versatility here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. While we are definitely not all things to all people, we try to be all things for those we serve.

We kick off our day with Stephen Stills and Manassas

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 23, 1972

Manassas is one of those bands many people have “fuzzy” memories of. They know they were out there, but are not quite sure what they were all about. As with all things Stills (a noted control freak), the band was formed mostly as a vehicle for his music (and it is great music, in truth). The members were Stills, Chris Hillman (formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers), Al Perkins, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Dallas Taylor, Paul Harris and Joe Layla. The players were invited to jam with Stills, they recorded an album and hit the road. They would break up, and reform with a different cast to record again, and then were done. But they made some great stuff along the way, like other supergroups.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Dusty Springfield’s fine effort today. But stick around, people. When you roll out of bed tomorrow morning, the first day of daylight savings, there’s going to be another great selection. I promise.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

The Big O is back today for your listening pleasure. It’s hard to believe that this guy hasn’t been around forever. His music feels like he should have been, but fate had other ideas. We keep Otis Redding alive here in The Mermaid Lounge. He’s a favorite.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, May 26, 1977 NEW!

We are back this week with a new live recording of The Dead in concert after a brief visit to replay land. This time around, they’re live at the Baltimore Civic Center. Enjoy.

Shawn Colvin has been at it for decades. She learned guitar at the age of ten, and grew up listening to her father’s music collection, which included recordings of Pete Seeger and The Kingston Trio. In 1996, she released her album A Few Small Repairs, and her resulting hit Sunny Came Home became her launching point, spending four weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It 1998, Sunny Came Home won Grammys for both Song and Record of the Year. Today, we put the music of Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight.

Hey, nothing sexist about this particular playlist. Just some great songs with the words ladies, women, or girls in their titles or lyrics…or both. This is always a fun exercise for me. There’s a lot of, “Oh yeah, hey, I almost forgot that song!”

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Long After Dark by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers UPDATED!

We’ve already got an album for this week, but it came to our attention yesterday that this great Heartbreakers album was released 39 years ago yesterday, giving us yet another opportunity to hear our House Band. This great album resulted in three singles, including the mighty You Got Lucky, in addition to Change of Heart and Straight Into Darkness.

We’re giving you an added bonus with this airing. At the end are two songs that were written and recorded for this album, but which were dropped. One is Turning Point, which appeared on the Playback album later. The other was one we never heard until after Tom Petty passed, called Keep A Little Soul. This one appeared on An American Treasure, released after his death. I love both of these songs and the beauty of having access to them is so that you can wonder how they were left off the original album, particularly Keep A Little Soul. At the end of the day, it matters not. These songs are here now and we get to experience them.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With Jimmy Reed, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, and Dusty Springfield, November 2, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a fine line-up today, but it does involve some explaining! Hey, this is why we write this blog every morning, come hell or high water (as my mother would say).

11:00 a.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Live in 1967

These great archival recordings feature one of the best Bluesbreakers line-up ever, with John Mayall (vocal, keyboards, harmonica), Peter Green (lead guitar), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). This iteration of The Bluesbreakers were only together for about three months, but one die-hard fan managed to sneak a reel-to-reel recorder into five London venues to capture this music history. While these one-track files have been engineered a bit, please keep in mind that this is 1967 and, although a bit rough, this is genuine music history.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

Our second airing of this great Album of The Week choice. Although this album sold poorly when released, it is recognized by the critics as one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Reed NEW!

Jimmy Reed is one of the most underrated bluesmen of his generation, but one thing is for certain: His particular style of electric blues was popular with both blues and non-blues audiences. His hits Honest I Do (1957), Baby What You Want Me To Do (1960), Big Boss Man (1961) and Bright Lights, Big City (1961) made it to both Billboards rhythm & blues and Hot 100 Singles charts. This Spotlight feature is taken from the Live at Carnegie Hall album set, which is basically a studio recreation of a past live concert, along with some of his greatest hits. We thought this would make a great way to introduce some folks to a guy who may have fallen through their blues cracks.

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

Take a trip down memory lane to the present with one of the original “protest” musical genres, FOLK. Her career spanned five decades, and she was one of the most famous transatlantic stars of The British Invasion, and a Sixties icon. Her first hit came in 1963 when she released I Only Want To Be With You. one of her six transatlantic hits of the Sixties that also included her two signature songs, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me and Son of A Preacher Man. Tune Dusty in at 7:00 p.m.

I remember going to see these guys in various venues around Cambridge, Massachusetts when I was just a young’un. This blues and swing revival band has been at this for five decades. They are no stranger to the blues circuit. If you haven’t paid much attention to them, this would be a good time.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Elton John by Elton John

This is our second airing of this great Elton John album, his debut in the U.S. but his second studio album outside this country. Two of my absolute favorite Elton John songs appear on this album, Take Me To The Pilot and Your Song. There are many singers and bands whose early music I prefer to their material in later years. Elton John is one of them.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York (1992)

This is a great collection of live songs performed by The Brothers during their residency at The Beacon during 1992. Some “live” Allman Brothers is a great way to close out the Tuesday Bluesday programming.
