Winding down on this weeks album choice is a brilliant idea by Paul McCartney to restore Let It Be to the form in which it was originally intended to be heard.

This is a brilliant compilation by two classic rock masters as Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton joined forces in February of 2008 to sing each other’s songs live at Madison Square Garden in New York. Not to be missed.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Clapton & Friends, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and Our Album of The Week Later, March 23, 2021

Here’s some real blue-eyed blues rock for you, led by Eric Clapton who has a penchant for getting his friends together for a great time. This is no exception.

3:00 p.m. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans (1970)

Most people think of Fleetwood Mac as a pop band, but the original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, led by Peter Green. This is a great collection here known commercially as The Warehouse Tapes. Keep in mind this was recorded in 1970, so there’s no great engineering going on with this stuff. It’s just…there.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles

Again, the stripped down version of the Fab Four’s final album the way it was originally meant to be heard, and the way we here in The Mermaid Lounge prefer it.

We Launch Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ Playlist and ‘Let It Be Naked’ Is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, March 21, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today, we honor the women of popular music with our brand new Ladies Day Out playlist, giving you exactly 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds of music from some of the most amazing female singers of our time.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

2:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists NEW!

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. Check out the Playlist section of this blog for a complete set list. All you need to do is scroll to the bottom! It should be up on the blog by noon.

This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

Bob Marley & The Wailers Live, Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale, the Final Airing of Eva Cassidy’s AOW, and Live Dead, on Saturday, March 20, 2021

We’re going to kick off the day with the man who is rightfully seen as a pioneer of Reggae music, Bob Marley. Widely recognized as the premier Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician, he and the Wailers developed a unique sound of their own by fusing together elements of Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Songbird by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album. She had a beautiful voice that many people still have yet to experience. She is now in our standard rotation, but this album will give you the immersion experience. Enjoy before we choose a new album tomorrow.

6:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale

Eric Clapton and his friends pay tribute to one of the great singer-songwriters of any generation, J.J. Cale, the man who pioneered what is called the Tulsa Sound, which fused blues, swamp music, rockabilly, country and jazz. Although he avoided the limelight, artists like Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Neil Young believe he was one of the most important musicl figures in popular music.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Carrier Dome at Syracuse University, October 22, 1983 NEW!

The boys are back for another fan-recorded event live from the Carrier Dome at Syracuse. Enjoy this entry from the worlds premier jam band.

This was a posthumously-released compilation album, as Eva died from cancer at the age of 33 back in 1996. She was virtually unknown at the time. Since its release, Songbird has gone multi-platinum. We’d like the people everywhere to get to know Eva Cassidy. Music lives forever.

We love Fats Domino here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s a lot of discussion about where rock n’ roll started, what was the first rock n’ roll song, and the question has been asked “Was anyone singing rock n’ roll before Fats Domino?” Not sure anyone actually was, but we certainly consider our friend from New Orleans a pioneer of the genre.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur FINAL AIRING!

Today we have the final airing of our Album of The Week as sultry crooner Maria Muldaur interprets the romantic side of Bob Dylan. Don’t forget to tune it in. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a new choice.

6:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1997

A few weeks ago, we featured Emmylou Harris’s brilliant album, Wrecking Ball, as our Album of The Week. Her tour with Spyboy took Wrecking Ball on the road, although she did feature several songs from other albums, most notably, her ode to Gram Parsons, the beautiful Boulder to Birmingham. The stripped-down approach to her music continued her love of working with a variety of different musicians. The band consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Uptown Theatre, Chicago, Illinois, December 3, 1979 NEW!

One more from the road from the greatest jam band in popular music history. Not sure I’ve ever said this, but please keep in mind that Live Dead shows are sourced from a variety of providers, including fan-recorded events so there may be some flaws and quality variations as we progress through the catalogue.

Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.

To be quite honest, I had not heard of Eva Cassidy until a friend told me to find her music and listen. So I did. There could be a reason why I did not have the opportunity to know her stuff, and it’s because she didn’t live long enough to become a star. Eva Cassidy passed away from cancer at the age of 33 back in 1966. Her album, Songbird, sold over five million copies worldwide. This is a do not miss performance. And yes, Eva’s music has been added to the standard rotation as well.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur

We are winding down on our Album of the Week. We’ll have one more airing of this one Saturday, before we choose a new release for next week. For those of you who did not know Dylan had a romantic side, and that Maria Muldaur has such a great voice and interpretive skills, I suggest you listen in.

In fact, I suggest you listen in period. Because you have to pay to get this kind of music elsewhere. And by the way, there is absolutely no music outlet who features women. Not even the ones you have to subscribe to.
