The way it works for me is that any friend of Linda Ronstadt is a friend of mine. I have discovered so many strong female singers and songwriters that way, and Wendy Waldman is no exception. (Others have included Valerie Carter and Karla Bonoff.) If you haven’t heard Wendy Waldman sing yet, you’re in for a treat. The song to listen for is The Eagle and The Owl. She and Ronstadt sound amazing together.

Everyone knows Bonnie Raitt. My friend, George, and I used to hang out at Jonathan Swifts back in the day. We’d go there to see John Lincoln Wright & The Sourmash Boys, and Bonnie Raitt would sometimes be hanging in the corner just to the left of center stage in the audience. Sometimes she’d join them.

Give It Up is 23-year-old Bonnie Raitt singing the blues before her amazing crossover career exploded. But no matter what you hear coming from her, the blues are always in her DNA, and there’s no mistaking that amazing slide guitar.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of B.B. King NEW!

I dunno what you say about B.B. King, so I won’t even try. He was a singer, songwriter, record producer who once stated:

“I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions.”

Not only did he name his girl Lucille, but he did just what he wanted to do, developing his own style of blues soloing that influenced so many who came after him.

It’s a Bluesy Saturday With Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and Albert King, September 26, 2020

Don’t scratch your head. The Heartbreakers often sang the blues both live and on vinyl, and the original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band. We also have one late-night tradition we cannot break here.

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

There wasn’t any style of music The Heartbreakers couldn’t make, and they have a lot of bluesy music in their catalogue. Mr. Petty often said he envisioned the band sitting around in chairs playing the blues when they got too old to rock. I have absolutely no doubt they could have pulled that off. You won’t either after you hear this playlist.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King

7:00 p.m. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, February 1, 1970

Is there a better place to hear a blues band live? Maybe Chicago, but that’s about it. No, this is not the current Fleetwood Mac. The original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, baby. It might interest you to know that Black Magic Woman wasn’t a Santana song. It’s a Fleetwod Mac song.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, New York, June 27, 1985 NEW!

Here’s another band who could sing it all in their own unique style, and they often sang the blues on stage. This is our one non-blue Saturday night offering that will not be denied. The SPAC was one of our favorite musical venues when we were young. I remember packing up the car on the weekends and heading out to upstate New York. We’d camp (for lack of money) and spend what we had at SPAC. We saw many bands here and I have so many fond memories. Never got to see The Dead here, but the imagination still works.

This would be an immensely good day for you to use your index finger to tune us in. It’s really very simple and it’s completely free and without strings, if you can imagine that.

Johnny Winter was the real deal, but perhaps not in the traditional sense. He is known for his distinctive blues-rock style, and his live performances of the late 60s and the 70s are legendary. He also produced three Grammy award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. Today we have him live at The Bottom Line.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King

Keeping with the Blues Week theme, this week’s Album of The Week is Albert King’s Born Under a Bad Sign, a compilation album released in 1967 on the Stax label. It was recorded from March 1966 to June 1967. King played with two house bands for this album, Booker T. & The MGs and the Memphis Horns.

4:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Guests: The Crossroads Guitar Festival Revisited

We have nearly four hours of music here from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festivals, a series of benefit concerts to raise money for the Crossroads Centre, a drug rehabilitation center in Antigua.

Susan Tedeschi, Gary Clark, Jr., The Robert Cray Band, Joe Walsh, B.B. King, Sheryl Crow, Jeff Beck, and Carlos Santana are just some of the musicians taking part.

Big Things Come In Groups of Threes Today From The Mermaid Lounge, Friday, September 18, 2020

It’s finally Friday. Of course, for those of us working retail, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the week. But no matter. Today in The Mermaid Lounge, great things come in groups of three. You’ll see what I mean.

12:00 p.m. The Complete Trio Collection: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton

I always lead off with Linda Ronstadt when I’m talking about a group of women singers. That is totally my bias, but it is without shame. No matter how you cut it, women get the short end of the straw in music. If they were guys, the word ‘supergroup’ would be flowing off everyone’s tongue. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly were a supergroup. The Complete Trio Collection proves it.

The complete collection gives you just that along with alternative versions of some of the songs and previously-unreleased material.

7:00 p.m. Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark: Together at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville, September 3, 1995

It was Emmylou Harris who led me to Guy Clark originally. But one winter night in Harvard Square, three friends were outside in the snow freezing and decided to go into Passim’s Coffee Shop to get out of the elements for a while. Somebody was playing that night, but when I walked in and saw it was none other than Guy Clark, I was excited. The three of us were literally blown off our fucking stools. He has been a favorite ever since. A friend of Emmylou.

Now we add Steve Earle and songwriter in the extreme Townes VanZandt to the mix and what we have here is an amazing evening at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. This event took place just fifteen months before VanZand’s death.

Yeah. It’s all-country programming today. What about it? This is one of the things that makes us different than all the rest. This will be about 6 or 7 hours of actual programming. The rest of the 24-hour cycle? All open stream with no commercials. No cost. No obligation. No credit card or personal data required. Radio like it used to be.

We’re a day late, but today we are celebrating Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair’s 72nd birthday (yesterday). He was an original founding member of the group who left, then came back after the death of Howie Epsein.

Their concert in 2002 after the release of The Last DJ, and turned out to be one of their strongest concerts ever.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Lost Tapes by Valerie Carter

Another airing of this great collection of never-before-released songs by the little girl with the big voice. Valerie Carter is a joy to behold.
