Simon & Garfunkel in The Spotlight, “Magical Mystery Tour” is Our Summer of Love Feature, The Final Airing of “Are You Experienced?” & Saturday Night’s Live Dead, August 15, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have a very busy Saturday in between all that great streaming. Sit yourselves down and enjoy.

simon&garfunkel

Here’s today’s line-up:

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Simon & Garfunkel   NEW!

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met in grammar school back in 1953, learned how to harmonize together, and began writing music. In 1957, they had their first modest success with Hey Schoolgirl, a song that emulated their idols, The Everly Brothers. The rest is — as they say — history, people.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience  FINAL AIRING!

Today we will bid a fond farewell to Jimi Hendrix’s brilliant debut album. Tomorrow we’ll have another Summer of Love Album of the Week for you.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles   NEW!

Like The Doors, the Beatles had two album releases in 1967. Magical Mystery Tour had the unfortunate task of following up Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an impossible task. We feature it today because it’s still a great collection of transformative Beatle songs.

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, December 31, 1977   NEW!

What could be better than spending New Year’s Eve with The Grateful Dead in San Francisco? Not much, people.

This is your day to tune us in. Don’t waste any more time. We’re free. We’re outside the system. And we intend to stay that way.

The Best of The Summer of Love: The Doors in The Spotlight, and “Their Satanic Majesties Request” by The Stones on the Turntable, Thursday, August 13, 2020

Good Morning, Time Travelers! Here we are back in The Summer of Love, and we’ve got a couple of great ones today. There’s also that guy named Jimi Hendrix hanging out too.

wp2298619-jimi-hendrix-2017-wallpapers

Here’s today’s Summer of Love line-up:

11:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

The Doors influenced  music in immense ways in a very short period of time. Who knows what could have come our way down the road. Morrison was, without a doubt, a poet. And the band was really good. The whole package, gone before we knew it. The Doors actually had two album releases in 1967, their debut album (The Doors) and Strange Days (featured yesterday).

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

With one album, Hendrix went from struggle to stardom. This album is heralded as one of the most amazing debuts in rock history.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones  NEW!

The Stones’ only foray into psychedelic music before returning to their roots was not one of my favorite efforts. However, it was the natural progression at the time, and to leave the album out would be egregious. (And any album that has She’s A Rainbow on it can’t be all bad.) I just thought the Stones felt uncomfortable with the genre more than anything. Contributing to this was the fact that the entire recording process was a literal shitshow. The link provides the details.

This would be an excellent day to tune in, turn on and drop out. Spend the day here in The Mermaid Lounge. You deserve a break from all this bullshit.

It’s Wednesday, and That Means (Mostly) Open Stream, Except for Our Summer of Love Entry and Our Tribute to Jerry Garcia, August 12, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s Wednesday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and that means a (Mostly) Open Stream day. I say mostly because we do have some priorities.

Here’s Wednesday’s line-up:

All Day    (Mostly) Open Stream

Streaming 25,000+ songs all day long. Your chances of hearing a song more than once is remote, to say the least.

5:00 p.m.  The Best of The Summer of Love! Strange Days by The Doors   NEW!

The Doors had two releases in 1967. One was already our Album of the Week. This is their second album.

8:00 p.m.  Tribute to Jerry Garcia: The Grateful Dead Live at The Boston Music Hall

Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and he passed away on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53. Today in his honor we replay a Live Dead show from the Boston Music Hall on June 9, 1976.

This is a great day to spend with #BecomeUngovernable Radio. Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. Who said that?

We Give You The Summer of Love AND Tuesday Bluesday in One Day! What Could Be Better? August 11, 2020.

Good Morning, Ungovernables and Hippie Freaks! It’s Tuesday, and we’ve got a fantastic bit of programming for you today. It’s hotter than Hades here in the Boston area. Good day to stay in and enjoy.

Here’s today’s musical smogasbord:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! Johnny Winter and Dr. John Live in Sweden (1987)

Two of my favorite bluesmen, live in one place at the same time. Love this shit.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Literally, one of the most bombastic debuts in rock music history. With one album, Jimi Hendrix went from struggling artist to gamechanger. His unique style would change the world of psychedelic rock forever.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of the Summer of Love, Volume 1: Various Artists   NEW!

The music released during 1967 was, literally, a cultural smorgasbord. It was musical nirvana from Haight-Ashbury all the way to my little street in Medford, where my friends and I lay in the driveway that summer with a transistor listening to WMEX. Back in the day, AM was king.

Tune us in, people. You will not regret it. It will take ONE singular visit.

Our Album of the Week Kicks Off Our ‘Summer of Love’ Experience, I Hear Those Echoes Again, and The Beach Boys Make Us Smile, Sunday, August 9, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a very special new Album of the Week that starts today! It begins our Summer of Love experience here in The Mermaid Lounge!

From now until the end of the  month, we’ll be celebrating the most important cultural aspect of the Summer of Love, the music. It begins today with our Album of the Week!

george-harrison-posse

George Harrison leads an improptu band of hippies through Golden Gate Park during the summer of 1967.

Here’s your Summer of Love line-up!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience   NEW!

The U.S. release of this groundbreaking Hendrix album came on August 23, 1967, right in the thick of the Summer of Love, and it met with both critical and commercial success from the start. To this date, it is considered one of the most powerful debuts in rock music history, and signaled a new direction in psychedelic music.

3:00 p.m.     Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

Another amazing musical experience that began in the sixties and continued on: The Laurel Canyon experience with The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and The Buffalo Springfield, for starters. You will hear them and many others if you tune in at 3:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.     The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions

Although this was released by the Beach Boys in 2011, it chronicles the original plans for the Smile album, the Beach Boys planned successor to the Pet Sounds album. Though the original album was abandoned and remains unfinished, the first 19 tracks of The Smile Sessions approximate what it might have sounded like.

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. With us.

Roy Orbison in B & W, A Tribute to Hank, The LIVE DEAD Train Rolls On, and The Final Airing of “All Things Must Pass,” Saturday, August 8, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a new day here in The Mermaid Lounge. To say that today’s offering to the music gods is eclectic would be an understatement.

roy orbison black & white night (1)

Here’s today’s line-up from the lounge:

11:00 a.m.   Roy Orbison & Friends: The Original Black & White Concert

This concert was originally broadcast on January 3, 1988, and was shot entirely in black and white. Hence, the name. By any standards this was a great night, with Orbison joined on stage by Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, and many others. A splendid time was had by all.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: All Things Must Pass by George Harrison  FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to All Things Must Pass, George Harrison’s unbelievable first solo post-Beatles effort. Tomorrow, it’ll be something new!

7:00 p.m.     Timeless: A Tribute to Hank Williams, Various Artists

I love these collections, where musicians have the opportunity to pay their respects to those who influenced them. With Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Keith Richards, and more!

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at William & Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia, September 24, 1976   NEW!

The consummate road band. We have not had one repeat performance since this program started. There is no end to material here. Best of all, no two shows are ever the same.

If you want to know what we’re all about, this would be a good day to find out. See for yourself how easy it is to tune us in. All you need is a browser tab and the link below. No credit card. No personal information. No advertising. No bullshit. No lie.

Dylan & Petty On The True Confessions Tour ’86, We Go Down To N’Awlins, and Our Album of the Week, Thursday, August 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got some great programming today, including one playlist that hasn’t been heard since Fat Tuesday!

bob-dylan-tributes-tom-petty

Here is your musical landscape:

11:00 a.m.   Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Cal Expo Amphitheater, Sacramento, June 12, 1986   NEW!

Perhaps a bit of pre-Wilburys foreshadowing here. Any time you get two guys like this on stage together, the result can only be musical nirvana. This show is from the second leg of the True Confessions Tour.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: All Things Must Pass by George Harrison

This was, without a doubt, a brilliant effort by Harrison, and it deserved all the critical accolades it received. You can learn more about this album by clicking on its image in the right sidebar.

7:00 p.m.    Down In N’Awlins: Various Artists

This is one sweet playlist that hasn’t been heard since Fat Tuesday back in February. Music is from BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Fats Domino, Lucinda Williams, and many others. We hope you enjoy it.

I guess I should stop saying “join us.” There’s nothing to actually join. Tune us in would be a better phrase. No credit card or personal information required any day. No commercials. No political talk. Just music.

Dylan & Cash Hang Out in Nashville, Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, and George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass,” Sunday, August 2, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers, and welcome to Sunday Funday. Today, we have some great music to stuff in your ears, all vintage material.

bonnie-raitt-1972-cant-find-my-way-home-735x413

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: All Things Must Pass by George Harrison   NEW!

George Harrison’s first solo effort after the break-up of The Beatles can certainly be considered a tour de force, at least from my perspective here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’re giving you the expanded version here with the jams. We’ve put those at the end of the actual album.

4:00 p.m.    Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash: Nashville 1969

Back during the recording of Dylan’s masterpiece, Nashville Skyline, he teamed up with Johnny Cash to record a bunch of songs. Only one, Girl From the North Country, made it on to the album. The rest are right here, and you should avail yourself of them.

7:00 p.m.    Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, February 15, 1972

The Troubadour. The musical incubator for so many great artists — real artists. Bonnie Raitt is one of them. Enjoy.

Come on. Tune us in. It’s Sunday. A day of rest, people. All you need is a fucking browser tab and the link below. Nothing more will be asked or required.

The Wailers’ Final Concert, Fats Domino in The Spotlight, Farewell to “Miles of Aisles” & This Week’s LIVE DEAD, Saturday, August 1, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’ve got a great line-up for Saturday, including Bob Marley’s final performance ever and our new Live Dead concert!

Bob-Marley-Press-Murphy-Hershman-Crop-1480x832

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.    Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Stanley Theater, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, September 23, 1980

This would be the lion’s final concert ever as he continued to perform with malignant melanoma. Bob Marley would leave this earth on May 11, 1981. Listen to the man, people. Get up, stand up.

3:00 p.m.       Album of the Week: Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell   FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Joni Mitchell’s first live album ever, Miles of Aisles. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection!

7:00 p.m.      In The Spotlight: The Music of Antoine “Fats” Domino

I’m not sure people truly understand how instrumental Fats Domino was to the birth of rock n’ roll, but we here do. He sold 65 millon records between 1955 and 1960 — in just five years. He also had eleven top 10 hits during that time also.

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Greek Theater, University of California at Berkeley, May 23, 1982   NEW!

Jerry Garcia leads the greatest jam band on the planet back for another live session, this time from The Greek Theater at UCal Berkeley.

In between all of this great programming, we are rotating 23,000+ songs. The chances of you hearing a duplicate song are slim and none. Give us a try today. We’re free. We’re outside the system, and we’re not in this for the money. We’re not making a dime.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Roomful of Blues, The Allman Brothers Band, and Joni Mitchell’s “Miles of Aisles,” July 28, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Here we are with another Tuesday Bluesday and we’ve got Roomful of Blues in The Spotlight, with the Allman Brothers Band bringing up the rear a bit later. Sandwiched in between is our Album of the Week.

Roomful of Blues

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday With Roomful of Blues in The Spotlight!   NEW!

This is a great fucking band whose name is not on the tip of everybody’s tongue, in spite of their critically-acclaimed history and their 50-year recording career. I’ve been listening to them for a while and even saw them once. They are based in Rhode Island, and began in 1967 when guitarist Duke Robillard and pianist Al Copley formed Roomful of Blues. They have changed personnel over the years and have added horns, exploring the R & B and swing influence. Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we are now beginning to upload their catalogue. Here’s a preview.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell

A musical review of Mitchell’s tour in support of the amazing Court & Spark album. It was Joni Mitchell’s first live album, and her first tour with a backing band — Tom Scott & The L.A. Express.

7:00 p.m.    The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3 & 5, 1970

It’s like a Tuesday Bluesday double feature here today in The Mermaid Lounge. We add the grand kahuna of blues here with the brothers.

Join us, people. We’re free. No personal information required. No credit card required. And that’s because we’re totally free and outside the capitalist system in all respects. What are you waiting for?
