That Sweet Soul Sound, Warren Zevon ‘Live’ at the Capitol, and Neil Young Returns With ‘Homegrown’ on Thursday, July 8, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re back with some programming today, including some great sixties soul (absolutely unbeatable) and one of the best, Warren Zevon.

Warren-Zevon-Flinch-Cover-Crop

Here’s your line-up for Thursday:

11:00 a.m.   That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists

Great sixties soul with Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Mary Wells, Bill Withers, The Shirelles, Roberta Flack, Fats Domino, Curtis Mayfield, and many others.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Homegrown by Neil Young

An encore performance of Neil Young’s 40th studio album, Homegrown, is finally out.

7:00 p.m.   Warren Zevon Live at The Capitol Theater, April 18, 1980   NEW!

One of the greatest singer-songwriters of his generation for certain. He left us far too soon, but not before he made an indelible mark on the music world.

This would be a great day to tune us in and give us a shot. Programming takes up only about six hours of our 24/7 programming. The rest is dedicated to open stream.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday, Our Album of the Week is Back, and Happy 80th Birthday, Ringo! Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Tuesday Bluesday is back and we’re heading down Louisiana way for today’s offering. And it’s Ringo’s 80th birthday, and we pay respects to him, an often underrated very important cog in the Beatles’ musical wheel.

ringo

Here’s today’s Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   DJ’s Choice: My Favorite Ringo Starr Songs   NEW!

A simple four-drum kit was all Ringo needed to make his sound. If you watched the video I posted earlier on the #BecomeUngovernable Radio Facebook page, you’ll see that his peers revere that sound and try to recapture it. Ringo didn’t need to steal the show. He drummed to the level that the song required. He was never bigger than the song itself.

You can check out that great Ringo video here!

3:00 p.m.    Album of The Week: Homegrown by Neil Young

The release is finally here! Originally shelved in 1975, Neil Young’s 40th studio release, Homegrown, has hit the airwaves.

7:00 p.m.    Tuesday Bluesday: The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume 1

Today we do something a bit different and head down to N’awlins for some Louisiana Blues!

Like Ringo, #BecomeUngovernable Radio is never bigger than the music. We’re free. No advertising. No credit card required. No politics. No bullshit. Just music 24/7.

The Girls Take The Stage Today, Chicago “Live” at Tanglewood, and Neil Young’s 40th Studio Release is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, July 5, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! How is your July 4 hangover? Well, some of our ‘hangovers’ are different from others. But we here at The Mermaid Lounge have the universal antidote. It’s called great music.

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: Homegrown by Neil Young     NEW!

Neil Young’s 40th studio release is our Album of the Week. Homegrown was actually recorded between June 1974 and January 1975, but the album was shelved by Young in favor of Tonight’s The Night. Young finally released this on June 19 of this year.

3:00 p.m.    The All-Girl Revue: Various Artists

We have four of these playlists now, but this was the first we ever put together. We have Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, Laura Nyro, Aretha Franklin, and many more.

8:00 p.m.    Chicago Live at Tanglewood, Lenox, MA, July 21, 1970

Chicago was one of the most adventurous, musically brilliant bands on the scene until Terry Kath’s unfortunate death. (At that point, Peter Cetera took over and turned it into fucking ballad-driven elevator music with a sometimes religious tinge.) I couldn’t find this concert on Chicago’s concert history list, and that’s because they were not Bill Graham’s first choice for his Fillmore at Tanglewood series. Neither Joe Cocker nor Jimi Hendrix could make the date, so it went to Chicago and, holy shit, did they ever deliver.

It’s Sunday; a day of rest. Kick back and tune us in. You will not regret it. I promise.

We Celebrate The Fourth With Our British Invasion Playlist, The Dead Return Later This Evening, and a Fond Farewell to Lucinda’s Great New Album, Saturday, July 4, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today, instead of celebrating with that warmongering national anthem of ours, we’re going to give you a full afternoon of The British Are Coming!

The British Are Coming!-Twitter

Here’s your July 4th line-up:

9:00 a.m.    Album of The Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams

We bid farewell to this great new Lucinda Williams album. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a brand new album posted on the blog!

12:00 p.m.  The British are Coming!: Various Artists   NEW!

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Them, Queen, The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Eric Clapton, and many, many more!

The full set list appears under the Playlist tab of this blog. Just scroll to the bottom!

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Love at Shoreline Amphitheater, October 3, 1987   NEW!

Another great jam concert from The Grateful Dead, this one from the Shoreline Amphitheater, a beautiful venue in the San Francisco area.

This is the perfect day to tune us in, people. We’ll be playing this in the backyard of my sister’s house all afternoon, so please join us!

It’s Clapton at Madison Square Garden, Paul Simon in The Spotlight, and Lucinda Williams’ New Album on Thursday, July 2, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! This is one of those days I wish I could stay in The Mermaid Lounge and listen, but alas, retail hell calls.

Here’s today’s line-up in the lounge:

11:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Paul Simon

Paul Simon’s career began back in 1956 with the duo of Simon & Garfunkel, add to that his years as a solo artist, and you have a career that spans six decades. Today we put him in The Spotlight.

3:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams is known for working slowly, and maybe there’s a method to her madness. Her latest release at the ripe young age of 67 proves that there’s no age barrier to kicking ass.

7:00 p.m.    Eric Clapton Live at Madison Square Garden, New York, March 19, 2017  NEW!

Speaking of kicking ass, we have Eric Clapton live at Madison Square Garden airing for the first time today. Clapton is an official guitar god. In addition to his incredible solo career, he has loaned his considerable talents to The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominos, and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.

Don’t hesitate. Tune us in today. There’s nothing to “join.” There’s no need to provide a credit card number or to provide any contact information. You literally go to the link below and you’re in. We are 24/7, no commercials, no politicians, no bullshit.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, The Doors Take The Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week, Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we have an oldie but goodie for you today.

Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band

Here’s your line-up for Tuesday:

11:00 a.m.  Tuesday Bluesday! Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, Live in Amsterdam, April 1, 1969   NEW!

The Kozmic Blues Band was but one of the bands that Janis fronted after Big Brother & The Holding Company and before Full Tilt Boogie, as she continued her quest for the “perfect” band. There isn’t much information out there about the band, other than the members’ names. The link I provided is just about the best info you can find out there, and it’s a fan site.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams

The latest album from Lucinda Williams is our featured album this week. You can learn more about this album by clicking on the photo in the right sidebar on this blog.

6:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

Like Janis Joplin, The Doors’ leader, Jim Morrison, is one of the members of the ’27 Club’, the rockers who died in their 27th year. There are several others in this group, including Gram Parsons, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones. The Doors were only a factor for four years but, in four years, they made some seriously great fucking music.

It’s time to tune us in! We’re sitting here waiting for you.

We’re ‘Under the Influence’ Today, Lucinda Williams Owns Our Album of The Week, and Spend Some Time With The Animals, Sunday, June 28, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Since I’m already under the influence, that’s how we’ll start our programming today. Beyond that, it’s a day of ‘firsts’ here.

Eric Burdon and the animals-4

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Under the Influence: Various Artists

Since I’m starting my weekend off under the influence, I feel we all should start our day that way!

3:00 p.m.   Album of The Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams   NEW!

Lucinda Williams is back, and we have her brand new album as our latest Album of The Week! It premieres here at 3:00 p.m. Read more about it here

7:00 p.m.   Deb’s Stream: Absolutely The Animals

Personally, I can’t believe it took me this long to put this playlist together. The Animals are undoubtedly one of the premier bands in the history of blues rock, and Eric Burdon is one of the best singers on the planet.

This would be a great day to tune us in. Actually, any day is a great day. So, just fucking do it:

Cream’s Farewell Concert, The Grateful Dead Does Boston, and “Mojo” Takes Its Leave, Saturday, June 27, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a find day here in Boston, home of The Mermaid Lounge and #BecomeUngovernable Radio. Europe is already on. Where the hell are you?

Cream_Clapton_Bruce_Baker_1960s

Here’s what’s in store for you today!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers   FINAL AIRING!

We bid a very fond farewell to one of the best albums the Heartbreakers ever made. Tomorrow, there’ll be a brand new Album of the Week when you wake up!

6:00 p.m.    Cream: The Farewell Concert 1968: Live BBC Transmission

Yet another great supergroup — featuring Eric Clapton (an official Guitar God),  bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker — formed in London in 1966.  Clapton’s stints with The Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers had run their course, and he was looking for something new. He found it. They gave their final live performance at Royal Albert Hall in London in 1968.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Boston Garden, Boston, MA: September 21, 1991   NEW!

My old stomping grounds: My beloved Boston Garden, now just a memory as we’ve exchanged it for the loud thumping, screaming, thunderous insane banging of the shithole known as TD Garden. I’ve been at TD Garden just once. That was quite enough. Thanks, anyway. But I digress. I was also at this particular Grateful Dead show. I remember it fondly.

Kids, it’s time for you to understand what radio was meant to be. We’ve got it right here.

Time for Some Drivin’ Songs, The McGarrigle Sisters Stop By, and “Mojo” Returns on Thursday, June 25, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have great music on top, including an interlude in the early evening from our sisters up north, Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

Kate & Anna McGarrigle

Here’s your musical landscape for today:

11:00 a.m.   Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists    NEW!

Driving. It’s something most of us do and, for some, it cannot be avoided. Some drive for a living. It goes without saying that good driving songs are essential under these circumstances. We’ll share with you some of ours. Now, some of these songs are indeed about being on the road. Some others? Hell, they are just great songs to drive to. Let’s not get too analytical here.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

It’s hard to find an album these days with 15 songs on it. And it’s even harder to find an album with 15 really great songs.

7:00 p.m.     Tell My Sister: The Unreleased Recordings of the McGarrigle Sisters

I call the McGarrigle sisters the Canadian Treasure, but they are also ours. Maybe you know their most famous songs; maybe not. And maybe you do but don’t realize they were behind those songs. Like, Linda Ronstadt’s Heart Like A Wheel? Maria Muldaur’s Cool River? Emmylou Harris’ Going Back To Harlan? They also have a bunch of unreleased stuff. That’s what you’ll be hearing this evening. And you will be hearing more from them down the road as we expand our library.

Come on, people. Give it a shot. We don’t have money to spend on advertising and PR. We need your help. Come spend some time with us. It requires no money. Ever. If you like us, tell others.

It’s a Tuesday Bluesday ALL Day! Joining The Allman Brothers Band are Taj Mahal in The Spotlight, and MOJO As Our Album of the Week, on June 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Without really planning this, we have a total Tuesday Bluesday today. If you don’t know the music of Taj Mahal, you have no idea what you’re missing. This would be a good day to find out.

Taj Mahal 68474-5

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday With the Allman Brothers Band, Recorded Live at A & R Studios   NEW!

On August 26, 1971, the legendary Allman Brothers Band hung out at A & R Studios in New York and delivered some great music. We’ve got it here for you in The Mermaid Lounge.

4:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This album is the Heartbreakers’ ode to the blues. Tom Petty once said he envisioned all of them sitting in chairs playing and singing the blues together when they got really old. It’s a shame we will never have that experience now.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal (born May 17, 1942) is the stage and recording name of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and accomplished bluesman, Henry Saint Clair Fredericks. I have bumped into several people who don’t know who Taj Mahal is, and I actually feel sorry for them. Mahal has successfully married traditional blues with influences like Cajun, Caribbean rhythms, Latin, reggae, R & B, gospel, and calypso. He’s an amazing gift to music.

Tuesday Bluesday is always a great day to join the ranks here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. No commercials, politicians, incessant talking, or begging for money. We are totally free and outside the system. We’re right up your alley unless, of course, you prefer to pay through the nose for your music.
