Elvis in Nashville in ’56, The Beatles in Transformation, and The Pretenders Return, on Thursday, June 4, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have some sweet stuff in our musical bag of tricks today. You’re going to love it. But only if you tune us in!

Elvis Nashvlle Sessions 1956

Here’s your Thursday line-up!

12:00 p.m.  Elvis Presley: The 1956 Nashville Recordings    NEW!

The 1956 Nashville sessions resulted in the very first album ever released by Elvis Presley. The album spent ten weeks at number one, and became the first rock n’ roll album to hit the top of the charts. It was also the first million selling album of the genre. The album also spawned the number one hit single, Heartbreak Hotel, undoubtedly one of my favorite Elvis Presley songs of all time. They don’t call Elvis “the king” for nothing. He was the inspiration for many, including the Beatles and Tom Petty, who met him at the age of 11. The rest is history.

5:00 p.m.    The Beatles: The Transformative Years

We are replaying this great playlist today that made its debut on #BecomeUngovernable Radio on May 16. Tomorrow, we add the third playlist in our Beatles series.

All three playlists are now up and available in the Playlist section of the blog. Just scroll to the bottom!

9:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Learning To Crawl by The Pretenders

We’re back with this great album from The Pretenders. If you haven’t heard it yet this week, you’ll only have Saturday. On Sunday a new album will be chosen.

Tune us in, people. You have no idea what you are missing!

After that, they became The Band, and the rest is musical history. The Band is Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and they are a force of nature.

The (Young) Rascals Debut, The Sounds of Laurel Canyon & The Pretenders Own Our New Album of the Week, Sunday, May 31, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We are closing out the month of May with a bang with a playlist from the fabled Laurel Canyon, the debut of The (Young) Rascals, and our new Album of the Week!

The Mamas & The Papas

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m.  In the Spotlight: The Sounds of the (Young) Rascals   NEW!

The Rascals (formerly called The Young Rascals) were formed in Garfield, New Jersey in 1965. One of the most underrated bands in history, The Rascals reached the Top 20 of The Billboard Hot 100 with nine singles between 1966 and 1968. This includes the #1 hits Good Lovin’ (1966), Groovin’ (1967), and People Got To Be Free (1968). Rolling Stone magazine called The Rascals the blackest white group of all.

The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Hit Parad Hall of Fame in 2010. The reunited for a series of concerts in 2012.

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Learning To Crawl, The Pretenders   NEW!

Learning To Crawl is the third studio album by The Pretenders. It was released on January 11, 1984 after a hiatus that saw both James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon die of drug overdoses.

Chrissie Hynde is sometimes overlooked as a pioneer in the male-dominated alternative rock music world. All of the songs except for one were written by her, and she’s a pretty incredible guitarist. The album resulted in five singles, including Back On The Chain Gang and Middle Of The Road

7:00 p.m.   Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

This playlist celebrates the popular music that came out of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon neighborhood in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas & The Papas cemented the California Sound. From 1965 to 1967, bands came to L.A. to emulate The Beatles. Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music.

Tune us in, people. It’s Sunday, a day of rest, no matter what they tell you.

Just Who Are The Blue Stingrays? The Final Airing of “On The Border,” and Saturday Night With The Dead, May 30, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! If you read the CD cover, The Blue Stingrays were the most famous surf band in history. Their legend is all spelled out. We introduce them to you today.

Mike Campbell-2

Here’s your Saturday line up!

12:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: On The Border by The Eagles

The final airing of our Album of the Week, On The Border. Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a brand new album!

5:00 p.m.  #SurfMusic is Back! Introducing the Blue Stingrays!    NEW!

When you look at the album cover, Surf N’Burn looks like a classic surf band album. In reality, it’s a 1997 release from The Heartbreakers without Mr. Petty. There is plenty of genuine surf guitar reverb here, masterfully played by one of the giants of guitar, Mike Campbell. He does Dick Dale (whom we will also be hearing soon) proud.

The give-away for me was the instrumental Goldfinger, which appeared on Surf N’Burn, a tune that the Heartbreakers played many times during their live shows in the 90s.

10:00 p.m.  Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at Foxboro Stadium, Foxboro, MA, July 14, 1990  NEW!

The Dead visit the Boston area and play Foxboro (not fucking Gillette) Stadium, before all the corporate entities started buying up the names.

Tune us in. We’re outside the system and we’re free. Forever.

WoodyGuthrie

Here’s your Thursday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

Sometimes I think the Kinks are overlooked on the big stage. They shouldn’t be. They’ve made some great rock n’roll. We’ll show you.

4:00 p.m.     Woody Guthrie: American Folk Giants, Volume 2: Various Artists   NEW!

Part two of the masters, including Woody, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, Odetta, The Weavers, The Carter Family and more! These are the people who inspired Dylan and many others. We’ll be getting to them next week!

8:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: On The Border by The Eagles

Without a doubt, my favorite album by The Eagles. You can learn more about this album and who helped create it by clicking on the photo on the right-hand side of the blog. Always.

Join us. Europe and Asia is all over this station. Apparently, the U.S. audiophiles are late bloomers. Either that or they don’t know good music when they hear it.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With The Yardbirds, Booker T. & The MGs in The Spotlight, and “On The Border”Returns, May 26, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s Tuesday Bluesday once again, and we’ve got The Yardbirds on tap. Be sure to join us!

Yardbirds

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! The Yardbirds: The BBC Sessions 1965-1968   NEW!

The Yardbirds are a British blues-rock band formed in London in May of 1963. The original lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. Throughout the years, other band members have come and gone.

During the BBC Sessions featured in this playlist, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page circulated in and out of the band.

4:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: On The Border by The Eagles

This was The Eagles third studio album, and they added Don Felder to go for a more rock feel than the first two albums.

6:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: Booker T. & The M.G.’s

Booker T. & The M.G.’s were a musical force in the sixties. Formed in Memphis in 1962, the band was influential in shaping the unique sound of Southern soul and Memphis soul. The original band members were Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson Jr. (drums). As the de facto house band for Stax Records, they also played for artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Wilson Pickett, and Delaney & Bonnie.

Tune us in for a great musical feast. We’re free. All the time.

Johnny Rivers in The Spotlight, James Brown Live at The House of Blues, and Our New Album of the Week on Sunday, May 24, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to a fine Sunday. Rumor has it that it’ll be about sixty here and sunny. We’ll take that. We’ve got some great stuff on tap today!

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Album of The Week: On The Border, The Eagles   NEW!

On The Border is the third studio album by The Eagles. On this album, they wanted to go for more of a rock feel, as opposed to their usual country rock offerings. They added Don Felder for this purpose. Some critics panned the album, but I never listen to music critics anyway (just like I don’t listen to sports radio). This is one of my favorite albums of all time.

The stand-out song for me is My Man, written by Bernie Leadon for the late, great Gram Parsons, who died of a drug overdose in September of 1973. Both Leadon and Parsons were in pioneering country-rock band The Flying Burrito Brothers together.

4:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers

Talk about an underrated performer! This guy just made so much flat-out great music, and had fun doing it. We all had fun listening to Secret Agent Man, Memphis, and Summer Rain laying around with the famed transistor radio in the heat of the summer.

7:00 p.m.   James Brown Live at The House of  Blues!

The hardest working man in show biz is back!

Come and spend your Sunday with us. You won’t be sorry you did!

#SurfMusic Debuts, Our New “Live Dead” Concert, and the Album of the Week, Saturday, May 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We are here on #SurfMusic Debut Day, kicking off at noon (Eastern). Later, we have a new Live Dead. Is Barton Hall their best concert ever?

Surf Jaws

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Instrumental Surf Anthology, Volume 1: Various Artists  NEW!

Surf Music was a pretty big thing during the sixties, peaking in popularity between 1962 and 1964. It originally began as instrumental music, with Dick Dale being the most iconic of the instrumental genre. Then the Beach Boys came along and brought the vocal genre to the mix. Here we start off with about an hour of the instrumental genre.

5:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Adieu False Heart, Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy

The final airing of our Album of the Week (sadly). Tomorrow when you rush to the blog, there’ll be a new album!

10:00 p.m.  Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at Barton Hall, Cornell University   NEW!

Is this the absolute best live performance ever turned in by The Grateful Dead? There are many Deadheads  who believe it is. See for yourself.

Tune us in, people. Time’s a wastin’

Learn more about this beautiful album by clicking on the photo in the sidebar of this blog.

3:00 p.m.    Skydog: The Legend of Duane Allman   NEW!

Duane Allman was the leader of the greatest Southern rock band on the planet, but he was also a most wanted man on guitar. He played guitar for many, including Boz Scaggs, Laura Nyro, Derek & The Dominos, Clarence Carter, Wilson Pickett, and many others.

7:00 p.m.    Goin’ Home, A Tribute to Fats Domino: Various Artists

Here we have another legend and rock n’roll pioneer. A New Orleans native, Antoine “Fats” Domino sold 65 million records during his career. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats had eleven top ten hits. He was quiet and humble, avoiding the limelight. This, no doubt, contributed to the fact that he is often overlooked.

Tune us in. You’ll hear stuff you aren’t going to hear anywhere else. I promise.
