Shawn Colvin has been at it for decades. She learned guitar at the age of ten, and grew up listening to her father’s music collection, which included recordings of Pete Seeger and The Kingston Trio. In 1996, she released her album A Few Small Repairs, and her resulting hit Sunny Came Home became her launching point, spending four weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It 1998, Sunny Came Home won Grammys for both Song and Record of the Year. Today, we put the music of Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon NEW!

You know, there’s lots of negative things to talk about where Warren Zevon is concerned. He burned a lot of bridges. He had his demons. But he was, very simply, one of the best singer-songwriters on the planet. Linda Ronstadt proved that several times over. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever made. I can’t find one throw-away song on it. Produced by Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, Zevon’s third studio album was released on January 18, 1978. Musicians who played on the album were some of the best-know studio musicians in the business in the 70’s including Russ Kunkel, Rick Marotta, and Mick Fleetwood taking turns on drums, and guitarists Danny Korchmar, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, John McVie, Leland Sklar, and Waddy Wachtel. Background vocals were provided by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and Kenny Edwards. Enjoy.

This was one of those EP’s that was so much fun to do it just kept going. It wound up being just over four hours of great songs with references to water in either the title, the lyrics, or both. 7:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness! The Full Catalogue

This playlist includes all of Mudcrutch, including the definitive live version of Hungry No More (a kickass song) recorded live at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. It also includes the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That, which was originally a Mudcrutch song. This was the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with when he made his move to L.A. to make music. It was the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history. EXCEPT, Tom Petty decided to bring Mudcrutch back to life in 2008 with its original members, including Tom Leadon on guitar (whose brother, Bernie, played with the Eagles) and Randall Marsh, his friend from Gainesville, on drums. As a member of Mudcrutch, Tom Petty was the bass player. Mudcrutch finally became a success in their own right. Their sound is awesome, and it’s different than The Hearbreakers even though the original Mudcrutch also had Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. If you’re a true Petty fan, then you already know Mudcrutch. If you’re just a lover of The Heartbreakers’ hits and you’re not a deep digger, this is your opportunity.

It’s Petty month here in The Mermaid Lounge. We won’t be obnoxious about it, but we will be playing more Tom Petty than usual, and that is always a good thing. We remain all about the music. There are supergroups, then there are SUPERGROUPS. This one is in the latter category. Every poll I’ve seen taken in every music magazine and on every music website puts The Traveling Wilburys at the top of the supergroup heap, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge wholeheartedly agree. It started with George Harrison needing to record a “B side” for a release. The rest is history. You can read about it here.

Folk music is an amazing genre. I remember when folk music purists were upset the day Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Dylan changed the face of folk and made it much more accessible to many people who may have ignored it. You’ll hear Bob Dylan in this EP. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons NEW!

Gram Parsons never lived long enough to see just how influential he truly was. He died at the age of 26 from multiple drug use in a Joshua Tree, California, on this very day (September 19) in 1973. It’s only fitting we pay him tribute with our Album of The Week.

Parsons was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist who played with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist. He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and, in spite of the rumors, they were not lovers. Their connection was music. She, of course, went on to become a country-rock legend.

Gram Parsons brought country to rock n’ roll and helped forge the country-rock genre in the same way that Bob Dylan brought folk to rock. He was that influential in a very short lifetime.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’re back with the music that helped to bring us to live here in The Mermaid Lounge. This volume focuses more on the mid-to-late sixties. You will hear The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (with and without her various bands), The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doors, The Zombies, and many more. 7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers Live at The Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, Recorded Live April 30-May 2, 1991

By the time Emmylou Harris brought her newly-formed band to the fabled Ryman Auditorium in 1991, it had been dormant for nearly twenty years. Once the home of The Grand Old Opry, it’s heyday was just a memory. The Opry had moved on to bigger and better digs. Emmylou Harris changed all that. Her concerts at the Ryman were — for lack of a better word — brilliant. They were so critically acclaimed that she literally saved The Ryman single handedly.

Following Emmylou’s shows, a renewed interest was sparked in The Ryman. The building was completely renovated and has become a world class concert hall. And in case you’re wondering who The Nash Ramblers are:

Sam Bush on fiddle, mandolin and vocals

Roy Huskey, Jr. on double bass and vocals

Larry Atamanuik on drums

Al Perkins on banjo, guitar, resonator guitar, and vocals

John Randall Stewart on guitar, mandolin, and vocals

Then, of course, there’s Emmylou Harris, an artist and musician who continually seeks to make a difference with her music.
