Happy Birthday, Tom Petty! Today It’s ‘Live’ Petty Twice, Once With Mudcrutch and Once With The Heartbreakers! (And Our AOW in Between.) Join the Party. Thursday, October 20, 2022

Good Morning, Pettyologists! Today we celebrate the 71st anniversary of the birth of Tom Petty as we wind down Tom Petty Month, but we still have some great stuff to go, including some never-before-heard here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. Stay tuned!

Here’s today’s musical excursion:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, CA, June 26, 2016

One of my great regrets in life was missing this Tom Petty tour with his “other” band, the band that left Gainesville all those years ago. They didn’t make it as Mudcrutch, but they did morph into The Heartbreakers. Later, Petty would pull this band back together and make it count, including this amazing 2016 tour. Their performance of Hungry No More at Boston’s House of Blues blew the doors off the place. And I missed it. Today we’ve got their performance at the Fonda Theatre in Cali.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones

We’re winding down on this one, folks. This is our next-to-last airing, the final one coming sometime on Saturday. On Sunday, we’ll continue on with the psychedelia.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live and Loving It!

We have several more Petty musical programs left in the month, so we’re dedicating this slot to our favorite live Heartbreaker performances here in The Mermaid Lounge. They come to you from a variety of venues. Enjoy.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is one of our House Bands (the other being The Beatles) and they hold a special place in our hearts. We struggle daily with the impulse to overplay our house bands, so we keep it on the downlow. But none of that nonsense on the man’s birthday. Enjoy the trip. It’s worth it.

We’ve Got The Heartbreakers ‘live’ at The Docks, Janis In The Spotlight, and The Zombies in Between, Thursday, October 6, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re heading for the weekend with some great programming as we feature The Heartbreakers, and celebrate Janis Joplin’s life with her Spotlight feature.

We lost Janis on October 4th and Petty on October 2nd; today we celebrate them both.

Here’s your musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Docks, Hamburg, Germany, April 23, 1999

This is one of The Heartbreakers most outstanding live shows full of their own great originals plus covers like Chuck Berry’s Around and Around, Little Richard’s Lucille, J.J. Cale’s Call Me The Breeze, and The Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth. The same qualities that made them one of the world’s greatest rock n’ roll bands also makes them one of the best cover bands. Recorded live and broadcast on Rockpalast.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies

This is the next-to-last airing of this fine psychedelic album so get in on it today. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, and we’ll have a brand new selection come Sunday morning.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Janis Joplin NEW!

We lost one of the greatest female blues singers of all time on October 4, 1970 and today we celebrate Janis Joplin’s musical life by putting her In the Spotlight. This one has been on the “to do” list for some time, and we’re glad to finally be airing it.

Great musical day here in The Mermaid Lounge. The sun will be back out here in Boston after a couple of days of much needed rain. We’ll be flirting with 70 degrees after a cold spell. It won’t last long, so it’s a day to enjoy. Stop by the Lounge and we’ll take care of your musical itch.

We Celebrate Tuesday Bluesday With New ‘Live’ John Mayall, our AOW, and The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues, October 4, 2022

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s Tuesday Bluesday here once again and we’ve got a great programming lineup for you wrapped around our psychedelic Album of The Week!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

11:00 a.m. John Mayall Live at Kongresshalle, Berlin, Germany, May 21, 1969 NEW!

We’re in possession of some new ‘live’ John Mayall recordings from the 35-disc box set we just scored, and we’re going to start off with this one on this fine Tuesday Bluesday. You’ll be hearing more in the future for sure!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies

We go for round two airing of this week’s featured album by The Zombies as we toss in a bit of psychedelia for the afternoon. As we said in our blog post on Sunday, it took nearly half a century for this album to be fully appreciated. (But not by me.)

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing the Blues

Tom Petty said he once envisioned his main band growing old together and sitting around in chairs playing the blues together. He never quite got there, unfortunately for all of us. However, he and the boys did sing some great blues together during their 40-year run, and we’ve got those songs here for you this evening as we continue on with Tom Petty month.

It’s always a great day to tune us in, but Tuesday Bluesday is an especially good day to do so. Why not join your friends from Italy, Greece, Russian Federation, Australia, Spain, the UK, France, Brazil, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Portugal, California, Kansas, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and points beyond? It’s totally free; no surprises, no lie.

As We Move Toward The Weekend, We’ve Got More Heartbreakers, Donovan’s AOW, and That ‘Other’ House Band (The Beatles) On Tap, Thursday, September 22, 2022

Good Morning! This is our House Band week and, as fate would have it, something fell right in our laps that we absolutely must take advantage of. However, you’ll all have to read on to find out what it is!

The Beatles and The Heartbreakers make a sandwich with Donovan’s Album of The Week!

Here’s Thursday’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, Recorded January 10-February 7, 1997

If you’re a Pettyhead, and I am, you learned yesterday that there is a new piece of musical magic coming from beyond life on this earth. On November 25, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore box set will be released. Yes, our order is already in, folks and we eagerly anticipate delivery. However, we do have a previous release from that residency that’s pretty special and we are airing it here to day in celebration and anticipation!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sunshine Superman by Donovan

We’re on our next-to-last airing here. This is Donovan at his most psychedelic as we continue our obsession with psychedelic music this month. Who knows where this will go next, but get this one in. Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The Beatles Live From the Apple Records Rooftop, London, UK, January 30, 1969

Yes, the complete concert is here for your listening pleasure. It isn’t lengthy, but it is pretty fantastic, and it is the final live performance from the fab four before the split. We think it’s fitting that we open and close our programming today with our two House Bands. We’ve got a bit more in the hopper from them as the week progresses.

This is a great day to tune us in. What could be better? We’ve got The Beatles and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers together on the same day, and both are ‘live’ performances. Yeah, I’d say that’s a reason to join your friends from around the globe.

We’re at Midweek With the ‘Original Sixties Rotation’ EP and a Little ‘Live’ Action From The Heartbreakers, Wednesday, September 21, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Today we’ve got our ‘Original Sixties Rotation’ EP to start off the day, along with some House Band action from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers later. (Hint: Tomorrow it’s that ‘other’ house band.)

Today we’ve got the first playlist we ever made!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is the first playlist we ever created, and it was modest at it’s inception. It has since been expanded into a full-blown EP, and has also spawned a second volume. Today, you will hear from Del Shannon, Little Eva, The Drifters, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Walker Bros, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, The Searchers, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Petula Clark, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, The Dave Clark Five, The Supremes, Harry Nilsson, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Blind Faith, Janis Joplin, Tony Joe White, Barry McGuire, Marvin Gaye, The Who, Procol Harum, The Temptations, Fats Domino, and more!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Coleman Coliseum, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, October 5, 1995

Yes, our eminent House Band on the road in Tuscaloosa on the ‘Dogs With Wings Tour’ in support of the brilliant album, Wildflowers. That ‘dogs with wings’ thing is a line from what happens to be my favorite TPATH song at the moment, It’s Good To Be King. It just sucks me in every time from the first note.

Get in on the midweek fun, people. We’ve got Chile, Greece, Italy, France, the UK, Australia, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Ohio, New York, Kansas, and points beyond on already this morning.

Today It’s The Dylan-Petty ‘True Confessions Tour,’ Another Airing of Our AOW, and The All-Girl Revue Later, Thursday, August 25, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! No EP today, but there’s no shortage of great programming here in The Mermaid Lounge as we take you on a great musical journey.

Here’s your programming for today:

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento, CA, June 12, 1986

Two masters alone and together on Dylan’s 1986 True Confessions Tour. Truly a wonder to behold.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Union by Elton John & Leon Russell

This afternoon we give you the next-to-last airing of this great collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell, released in 2010. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume Three: Various Artists

Tonight we put the women of music in charge once again. You’ll hear a shortened version of our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP with Linda Ronstadt, Valerie Carter, Phoebe Snow, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Melanie, Norah Jones, Judy Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Dolly Partin, Shawn Colvin, Wendy Waldman, Susan Tedeschi, The Shirelles, The Staple Singers (featuring Mavis Staples), Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Pretenders (featuring Chrissie Hynde), Joni Mitchell and more!

Come on. Blah. Blah. Blah. We say it over and over and over. Just tune us in. We’re totally free 24/7. I know this might be hard to believe, but we make not one cent off this thing. It’s what we here in The Mermaid Lounge call a ‘labor of love.’ We ain’t lying.

We Bring You The End of the Work Week With Our ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at The Fillmore Vintage ’99, Friday, August 12, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have hit Friday, and that is always a good thing in my book. That means I have but one more day in retail hell. Today, we give you a little bit of soul and some live TPATH.

Today’s EP covers the entire soul and R & B spectrum, not just Motown!

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

Today we cover the spectrum of this great musical genre with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Irma Thomas and more! Five uninterrupted hours of soul and R & B!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, March 15-16, 1999

Here we have The Heartbreakers on the High Grass Dogs Tour, making their traditional stop at San Francisco’s iconic Fillmore. One great live band at a great venue. They’re our house band for a reason, people. Find out why.

Before, in between and after, we’ve got our wide Open Stream with thousands of songs for The Music Mermaid to choose from. We never know what she’s up to. And we don’t ask foolish questions. All you need is a tab and a cursor. You don’t need a wallet. Your money’s no good here.

We Close Out The Work Week With Our Multi-Artist ‘House EP’ and The Beatles’ Transformation Years on Friday, July 22, 2022

Good Morning, Beatles Lovers! Not only do we have part two of our Beatles triple play a bit later, but we’ve got our very own #BecomeUngovernable House EP to get you through the day.

We’ve got our feet firmly planted in our DNA today!

Here’s what you’re listening to on this fine day:

10:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

Today we’ve got just over five hours of music that makes up this station’s DNA, including a fair amount of socially conscious music, something sorely lacking today. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, The Beatles, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, , Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, Billy Joel, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone and more!

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Transformation Years

Undoubtedly the most creative of all times in their career which, frankly, wasn’t a very long one. Wings lasted longer than The Beatles, but nobody had the influence on music that The Beatles had in a short period of time, and perhaps no band will ever repeat that feat again. We’ve got music here from about the time of Rubber Soul to the latter part of the sixties.

Great day to be here. It’s hot as Hades out there today. And not getting any less ugly either as this promises to carry into the weekend. Stay cool with us here in The Mermaid Lounge as we play the greatest music on the planet. All free of charge and free of commercial interruption.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday and We’ve Got Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Heartbreakers, and Ronstadt On Tap, July 19, 2022

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’ve got some good stuff on tap for this Tuesday Bluesday, including a visit from one of our House Bands later on. Read on for all the details!

It’s Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

10:00 a.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Live at Carnegie Hall, New York, October 4, 1984

We’ve got SRV in the house to kick off the Tuesday Bluesday activities. This time around we’ve got a live performance from Carnegie Hall with his band, Double Trouble.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hasten Down The Wind by Linda Ronstadt

The only break in the blues programming is for this great album. Although, technically, Ronstadt pays homage to the blues genre with her amazing version of the great Tracy Nelson’s Down So Low. Spectacular.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

It’s no secret that Tom Petty had a vision of he and his bandmates growing old together sitting around on chairs singing the blues. He said that often, and his love for the blues showed on many albums and in many live performances where he would spontaneously add blues songs to a set list. The album Mojo was a tribute to the blues. And finally, if you listen to Tom Petty Radio, you’ll know he was also a DJ on the Buried Treasure show which featured the blues quite frequently. But the ultimate proof of The Heartbreakers’ passion for the blues is to listen to them sing the blues. So, here you have it.

Tuesday is always a good day to tune us in. Today, we’ve already got folks on from Romania, Russian Federation, Australia, the UK, France, Spain, Greece, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, and points beyond. All you need is a computer tab. We do the rest. Your money is no good here.

Monday Starts Our Summer of Love Run, We Have The Heartbreakers Covering Others, and New ‘Live’ Music From The Band, July 4, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists and welcome to another Monday! Forget the date, folks, we’re not celebrating the nation until this march to fascism is halted and we all have the same rights as the rich, bloated white men that own the GOP. Today, the only thing we celebrate is music.

The Summer of Love starts the day off at 11:00 a.m.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. The Summer of Love, Volume One: Various Artists

Proving once again that misinformation is everywhere, I often see 1969 heralded as the year of ‘The Summer of Love.’ Nope. In fact, it was 1967, and the Summer of Love ran from June to October. And while we here in The Mermaid Lounge know that it wasn’t all peace n’ love in the sixties, that cultural time in history produced some of the greatest music on the planet. You’ll hear The Electric Prunes, The Yardbirds, The Box Tops, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Grace Slick & The Great Society, Cream, The Doors, The Association, The Spencer-Davis Group, Donovan, The Grass Roots, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Paul Revere & The Raiders and more! This is volume one. You’ll also be hearing volumes two and three later this week!

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under the Covers

One of the greatest rock n’ roll bands of all time was also one of the greatest cover bands of all time. Today Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers cover those who inspired them, including J.J. Cale, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Carole King, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and The Clash, to name a few.

7:00 p.m. The Band Live From Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan, September 2, 1983 NEW!

We’ve got a brand new ‘live’ performance for you from one of the most influential bands in the history of popular music. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became a force in their own right. It’s hard to describe the magic of The Band, but it’s real. And they are just great on stage.

Listen, you could do worse on a Monday. Most people have this particular Monday off, and what better day to give us a shot and join your friends from around the globe. Today we have folks from Chile, Canada, Poland, Germany, the UK, Croatia, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Norway, The Netherlands, Cleveland, Dallas, and Frisco tuned in. Where are you today?
