It’ll Be a Better Monday With Mudcrutch Madness, Fats Domino, and Some ‘Live’ CCR Bringing Up the Rear, July 11, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We haven’t had a Mudcrutch Monday Madness for far too long now, so that’s how we’ll kick off the day, followed by Fats Domino In the Spotlight, and ‘live’ CCR later!

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. MUDCRUTCH MONDAY MADNESS!

Today’s madness is the full catalogue. Just over two hours of every song Mudcrutch ever made before they morphed into our House Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This is the band that left Gainesville for L.A. all those years ago. In 2008, Petty would reunite the band with it’s original members, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Randall Marsh, and Tom Leadon, to great success.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

The question remains: Did Fats Domino invent rock n’ roll? You know, nobody can say for sure. Rock n’ Roll had its own group of ‘founding parents’ as I like to call it, and surely Fats Domino is high up on that list. One thing is for sure, nobody can definitively say he wasn’t the first guy to play that music.

Speaking of bands with a unique sound, this band of brothers definitely qualifies. You instantly know who’s singing that song when you hear it. Four guys from Berkeley who sound like they just came out of the Bayou.

No doubt about it. Monday’s suck. Every week I’m eternally grateful that Sunday and Monday are my weekend days. Somehow, it makes the rest of the week go faster. I know. It’s all psychological, but it works for me. In the meantime, if you work somewhere where you can multitask, grab yourself some ear buds, pull up a tab, and tune us in. It’ll make Monday oh so tolerable.

You know, there’s urban legend, and then there’s sheer musical ignorance. The notion that Ringo isn’t a “good” drummer is patently absurd. In fact, his peers will tell you otherwise. Perhaps you should watch this video featuring Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Jim Keltner, Stewart Copeland, Tre Cool, Chad Smith and others. Remember, The Beatles wanted Ringo and stole him from Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, dumping Pete Best in the process. He’s a drummer’s drummer, and most of the criticism is because he isn’t John Bonham with his 40-minute drum solos. But that shit? That shit breaks up the continuity of a song, in my humble opinion. And Ringo was and still is all about giving the song what it needs. His attitude about drum solos is all that it proves is that you took lessons. But best of all is that Ringo is just a good guy who has fun on stage with his All Starr band, and at 82, he’s still filling stadiums to spread his feel-good sounds. Today, we celebrate Ringo’s 82nd birthday (yesterday) with some of our favorites where he was only the drummer, every song he sang solo on as a member of The Beatles, and his own solo stuff.

Get on board the weekend train because we are almost there, people. It’s all downhill from here, as they say. I will, of course, have one day left after today since I toil in the very real world of retail hell in a nation where buying is equated with freedom. So are guns. But we won’t go there. Instead, we’ll focus on the music, so join us. We promise no chatty DJs, and no news here. Just music 24/7. And did I mention we’re totally FREE (in all caps and with NO strings)?

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: McCartney by Paul McCartney NEW!

Released on April 17, 1970, this was the very first Beatle solo album. Of course, people were absolutely pissed that the Beatles had broken up, so it took a while for people to warm up to this one, but over the years it has become one of the most beloved albums of all time. I also look back now and remember that the album was criticized for what appeared to be “unfinished” tunes. Now, alternate takes, unfinished versions, home recordings and all of the progressions to the final product are literally an art form. I remember the angst of millions that The Beatles were gone, and I suspect a lot of the criticism came from the fact that they broke up to begin with. The blame game was being played. I, too, was upset that The Beatles were no more, but as I got older I realized that bands break up all the damned time. I also know that The Beatles gave us all they had in the tank. They changed everything in a very short period of time, and the band’s music is timeless. That’s also the way I look at them as solo artists as well.

Psychedelic music is one of my most favorite genres of all time, so I’m looking forward to this one myself! Even bands not know as “psychedelic” bands tried their hand at this genre. Tonight’s LIVE DEAD! is a rare repeat, but it hasn’t been aired since 2020, so it should sound just like new to those of you who aren’t Deadheads (and they don’t care how many times they hear a Grateful Dead show; it’s all new to them).

We’re chock full of stuff today and we think you’ll like it. There’s no better way to kick start your weekend than with the little radio station that could. (I think I like that.) There are, of course, some things we just can’t do, like play rap and screaming heavy metal death, charge for listening, or play commercial advertising. But we’re pretty damned good with everything else.

The music world is full of judgment. In fact, you can look to the word ‘judgment’ as an example. Nobody can really definitively tell you the correct spelling, so fuck it. Some people in music are made to write. Bobbie Gentry, for example, never wanted to sing. She wanted to write songs for other people. Linda Ronstadt, on the other hand, has proven that she can write, but she didn’t think it was necessary since there were already so many great songwriters out there. All she wanted to do was sing. And that’s just fine with me because that voice can sing anything. She’s simply the greatest female vocalist of all time. If you have not yet had the chance to see the documentary, The Sound of My Voice, you need to. The fact that she can no longer sing is a travesty. But we have an amazing body of work from Linda Ronstadt, and it is on display here tonight.

This is a most excellent day to tune us in. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than this. We’re totally free. We do not accept or air advertising. And we’re on the air 24/7. What more could you ask for?
