Undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite bands. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite and, when I do, it could change at any time!

4:00 p.m.     The Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers Live at the Fonda Theater, Hollywood    NEW!

Maybe Van Morrison started a trend when he performed Astral Weeks live at The Hollywood Bowl in 2009 because, in May 2015, at the intimate Fonda Theater the Rolling Stones performed the entire Sticky Fingers album live in concert for the first — and so far — only time in their career.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 30th Anniversary Concert, and “Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band” is Our Album of the Week, Sunday, April 26, 2020

12:00 p.m.   Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 30th Anniversary Concert: Live From The Stephen J. O’Connell Center, Gainesville, Florida, September 21, 2006  NEW!

Undoubtedly one of the most amazing live performances in Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s concert history. The band is joined on stage for several songs by Stevie Nicks. Musically, the band is on top of its game, and Mike Campbell’s guitar is blistering.

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by The Beatles NEW!

This album changed everything. It was a first for many, many reasons. It was the music world’s first “concept” album, fully launching The Beatles into a new realm of psychedelic music. It was the first album to feature an expanded cover with the lyrics to the songs in print. 

Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band was The Beatles’ 8th studio album, released on May 26, 1967 in the UK, and June 2, 1967 in the U.S. It spent 27 weeks in the number one position on the UK charts, and 15 weeks at number one on Billboard. It received four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year, the first rock album to receive this honor.

7:30 p.m.     NOT The Album of the Week: Full Moon Fever, Tom Petty   NEW!

Today’s treat gives us yet another great solo effort by Tom Petty. Full Moon Fever was released 31 years ago Friday, on April 24, 1989. Petty was joined on the album not only by his Heartbreaker bandmates, but also by his Wilbury bandmates. The album was produced by Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Mike Campbell. Most of the compositions were by Petty and Lynne. The album was an immediate critical and commercial success, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard charts. It was certified 5X platinum in the U.S. and 6X platinum in Canada.

We’re Paying Homage to Rhythm & Blues Today, Friday, April 24, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! On this day in 1954 (I was a little over 2 months old at the time), the Billboard magazine headline read:

“Teenagers Demand Music With a Beat — Spur Rhythm & Blues”

Throughout the sixties, R & B became the inspiration for many, many of the bands we feature here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio, including both The Beatles and The Stones.

When I say getting live Hendrix is a rarity, it’s because his professional career lasted only four years before his premature death at the age of 27. In spite of that, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians in rock music history.

7:00 p.m.   Badfinger Live at the Cowtown Auditorium, Kansas City (1972)

The Badfinger story is indeed a tragic one, but this band was the only legitimate star signing for Apple Records, and they left us a great body of music to appreciate.

8:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters

Tom Petty mentored the Shelters and produced their first album. At the time of his death, he was working with them on their second album. The Shelters forged on without their friend, and finished the album. It is included in this playlist.

It’s Open Stream Friday Today, April 17, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re uploading new music today and tomorrow, so we’re giving you an Open Stream Day. Somebody asked me about just exactly what Open Stream means, so we’ll tell you.

#BecomeUngovernable Radio’s open streams are open to all uploaded content, even programmed playlists.  For example, it could randomly pick up a concert that we have programmed in the past, say like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at the New Orleans Jazzfest, and play it all the way through as though it were programmed. Other times, it will randomly select individual songs. We do not limit content on stream days.

So, in short, you’re guess as to what will be next is as good as ours!

What do we do on Open Stream Days?

We download new music and upload new music! We’re at about 22,339 uploaded songs and counting. We never have a shortage of details to attend to, and I personally spend at least two hours a day sourcing new music.

As Mr. Petty says, “Elvis was king but Diddley was daddy.”  What we have here are two real innovators in rock n’ roll together. And nothing bad can come of that, as you will see. 

4:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Elite Hotel by Emmylou Harris

Elite Hotel was Harris’ third studio release, and the second release in 1975 (the first being the critically acclaimed Pieces of the Sky).

7:00 p.m.   The Moody Blues at Red Rocks Ampitheater with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, September 9, 1992

In spite of their long and glorious career, this marks the first time The Moody Blues ever performed live with a full symphony orchestra. If nobody has ever been to Red Rocks, it’s an amazing experience.
