We Close Out Women’s History Month in Style With Lucinda, Linda and Emmylou, on Thursday, March 31, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are closing out Women’s History Month in style today with all-women programming! Of course, before, in between and after it’ll be our wide Open Stream, so enjoy the day!

11:00 a.m. Lucinda Williams Live at Austin City Limits, December 5, 1988

Lucinda Williams is a singer, songwriter and musician who has fused rock, blues, country and Americana into her own distinctive style. In 1988, she released her album Lucinda Williams to great critical acclaim. The album included the song Passionate Kisses, which would eventually become a hit for Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her commercial breakthrough, however, came in 1998 with the release of her album Car Wheels On a Gravel Road. And as you know, any friend of Mr. Petty’s is a friend of mine. She opened several shows on The Heartbreaker’s final 40th Anniversary Tour. Today, we have her on Austin City Limits.

This album certainly didn’t turn out the way Tom Petty originally envisioned it, but it holds some great Heartbreaker songs. We’re on our next-to-last airing today, so get in on it while you can. If you haven’t got it in your Petty collection, you’ll want to get it.

Two of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge on their Western Wall tour. I had the total pleasure of being at this show. It was damned near life-changing for me to see two such brilliant singers together on the same stage.

We’re on our way to the weekend kids! And there’s no better way to end Women’s History Month than turning the programming portion of the day over to the women of music. Of course, as you know, every month is Women’s History Month here, at least from a musical perspective!

The other very exciting guest is kick-ass violinist Scarlet Rivera, who I got to know from Bob Dylan’s Desire album, and his Rolling Thunder tour in ’75. I was so taken with her violin on Desire, that I went to see her live in concert back in the days of the Boston Music Hall.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan NEW!

Dylan is another one of those guys who gives me fits. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for me to pick a favorite album. Is it Desire? Is it Blood On The Tracks? Is it Nashville Skyline? I don’t know. It varies with my musical mood, I guess. I have the same problem with The Heartbreakers and The Beatles.

This is Bob Dylan’s 15th studio album, released on January 20. 1975, so we honor this album very close to it’s 47th anniversary, written at a time when there was a lot of stress in Dylan’s personal life. Jakob Dylan once described this album as “my parents talking,” but his father insists it’s not autobiographical. Either way, this album logged in at no. 16 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time. By 2004, it has risen to no. 9. It reached no. 1 on The Billboard 200 Chart, and no. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Give it a listen. It is undoubtedly one of Dylan’s very best.

A great 20-song performance New Orleans’ Nitetripper, broadcast live by WLIR-FM in Long Island. This was when FM radio was king and we had all those great simulcast events going on. You’ll be seeing more of these as we move through 2022, but do not miss this one today. Dr. John is a NOLA legend.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

Not only is Wendy Waldman a critically-acclaimed recording artists, she’s also recognized as a writer of multi-platinum songs for other artists, a producer, a teacher, and a working musician. In the early 70s, when folk-rock was coming into focus, she started a band called Bryndle with fellow artists Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. They made one unreleased album, and then went their separate ways. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Wendy Waldman went on to make several great albums. She became friends with Linda Ronstadt, singing back up on several songs and going on tour with Ronstadt. Karla Bonoff made her mark as a songwriter, while Kenny Edwards and Andrew Gold joined Linda Ronstadt. I consider Wendy Waldman one of the most underappreciated figures in popular music. Listen and you will too.

Driving and music somehow just go together, and I admit that many of the songs on this particular playlist give me ‘lead foot’ when I’m on the open road. We give you this warning every week. We’re down to our last two airings of this great album. The final airing will be Saturday. On Sunday, we’ve got a brand new album lined up and ready to go.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger was a great power pop band who recorded a string of great hits during the 70’s. They began their career as The Iveys, and they were indeed the only bona fide stars ever signed by The Beatles to Apple Records. Their final story was a sad one. The band was fleeced by its manager (not the Beatles), and two band members committed suicide, including Pete Ham, their leader. Nevertheless, while they were on the Apple label, they made some of the greatest music on the planet. There are some songs you can’t help but associate with movies and TV shows. My favorite Badfinger song, Baby Blue, will forever be emblazoned in my brain as the song that closed the great series, Breaking Bad.
