It’s Sunday Funday Here in the Lounge, and We Have Our New Album of The Week, and The Original Sixties Rotation For Your Listening Pleasure, September 5, 2021

Good Morning, Long Weekenders! We move into fall in style today with an appropriately-titled Album of The Week, and our infamous Original Sixties Rotation this afternoon and into the evening.

We’ve got the music that inspired the radio station today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together. Since we started, it has developed into an extended play event, covering more than five hours of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Lulu, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Petula Clark, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and more.

What more could you ask for on this fine day? Oh, yeah, did I mention that we are completely free? No subscription, credit card, or personal information required to tune us in. We don’t buy from either Apple or Amazon, and we accept no advertising. That’s a bonus.

Produced by Peter Asher (formerly of Peter & Gordon), legendary manager of Linda Ronstadt, and friend of The Beatles, it’s a great collection of songs by a woman who is part of a very musical family. Here’s your mid-week line-up:

11:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists NEW!

Did you know that the earth is about 71% water, and that 97% of that water is found in the oceans? That means only 3% is drinking water. Now that I’ve filled you with scientific information, let’s talk about our latest extended playlist.

We opened this playlist up to suggestions a while ago, but hadn’t gotten to it until just recently. The emails were out of control, but the suggestions were so great that we made ourselves a great multi-artist playlist all about water. You’ll hear The Beatles, Deep Purple, Donovan. Led Zeppelin, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Foo Fighters, Loggins & Messina, Al Green, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Elton John, and more!

In fact, you can check out this great new playlist under the ‘Playlist’ tab of this blog before listening. Just go to the tab and scroll to the bottom.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists

This is one of our mainstays here in The Mermaid Lounge. Another multi-artist playlist that’s been around for a while, it features Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson, The Four Tops, Curtis Mayfield, Etta James, Bill Withers, The Temptations, Ann Peebles, and more!

We’re at The Midweek Point With a Wilbury Wednesday, and Our Psychedelic Express Playlist Later, July 14, 2021

Good Morning, fellow Wilbury lovers everywhere! We’ve got a Wilbury Wednesday in store for you today as we play the complete collection today. Later on, it’s our Psychedelic Express playlist.

The post-Orbison era Wilburys. Simply the greatest supergroup ever assembled.

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. WILBURY WEDNESDAY! The Complete Wilburys: Volumes 1 & 3

Everything they ever recorded, both with and after Roy Orbison’s untimely death. They numbered the volumes this way for some unknown reason and we are not arguing. People should not forget Buster Sidebury, who is the great Jim Keltner on drums. Here’s some material on the Wilburys for your reading enjoyment. (By the way, it’s a great website to travel through.)

7:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

This one is due for an update, but here it is nevertheless. You’ll hear Donovan, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Blues Image, Jefferson Airplane, The Chambers Brothers, The Byrds, Cream, The Beatles, The Doors, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, and more!

In between, it’s wide Open Stream, so enjoy as we prepare for the Linda Ronstadt birthday bash tomorrow. We’re totally free every day, not just when we want to suck you into a subscription (which we don’t even ask for). We run no advertising, just an occasional station I.D. from yours truly, and we certainly don’t want to know your personal information. We have our own problems here.

Good Morning, Gang! Here we are again on another Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge. We had a bit of an interruption in the flow with Fillmore Fest earlier in the month, but we’re back on track now!

The Wallflowers are back with their first new album in ten years and its our Album of The Week!

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Exit Wounds by The Wallflowers NEW!

This guy is my personal songwriting favorite in the post-Petty era. Jakob Dylan recently gave an interview, in fact, in which he said that his friend Tom Petty loomed large over this album, his first in ten years with The Wallflowers. We are certainly glad they are back.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station is back for another uninterrupted five-hour stint today. We had a minor delay to pay honor to The Fillmore, but we are back on track now. This is the music that covers the mid-to-late sixties with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Janis Joplin (with and without Big Brother), The Kinks, The Grateful Dead, The Chambers Brothers, Melanie, The Temptations, The Stone Poneys (featuring Linda Ronstadt), The Band, Bob Dylan, The Four Tops, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, Scott McKenzie, The Mamas & The Papas, and many, many others.

Get off to an early start. We already have people listening in from the UK, France, Denmark, the Russian Federation, The Faroe Islands (look them up; it’s real), Switzerland, Germany, and our home base in the U.S. All are welcome. Jeff Lynne’s ELO In the Spotlight, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, and Songs About Location, Location, Location, Wednesday, May 26, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s going to be steamy hot here today, but in The Mermaid Lounge we’ve got nothing but coolness going as we launch a brand new playlist this evening.

The Mothership hovers arouond 11:00 a.m. this morning!

Here’s your mid-week line-up!

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Electric Light Orchestra

It has been a long time between airings for this playlist, so we are more than overdue for some of Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Before Jeff Lynne (and after, actually) was a Wilbury and a producer of Tom Petty’s albums, he was the front man for a band called The Move (we will play some material from them later this week), and ELO. We put his time with ELO In The Spotlight today.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live in ’75: The Rolling Thunder Revue

We continue our celebration of the birthday boy’s 80th year with a selection of Rolling Thunder Revue live music, vintage 1975. Later this week, we go back even further into the archives.

7:00 p.m. On The Map: Various Artists NEW!

They say location is everything, and we’re here to prove it with a playlist of songs with prime locations either in the title or in the lyrics. This is a fun one, and some of the musicians you’ll hear are Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty, Tom Rush, Glen Campbell, Creedence Clearwater Revival, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, The Grateful Dead, and The Beatles.

The playlist will be up under the Playlist tab before 7:00 p.m. All you have to do is scroll down to the bottom!

We’ve got new music today, so that’s always a good day to give us a shot. I don’t know what you’re waiting for. Join your friends from around the globe for some 24/7 totally free, outside-the-capitalist system music. You won’t regret it.

It’s a Big Day for The Brits With The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues, Friday, April 23, 2021

Good Morning, British Music Lovers! It’s a bit of a departure from the norm here today in The Mermaid Lounge, beginning with some new Beatles material (new to us, that is).

Pop Go The Beatles!

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. The Beatles Live at The BBC, Volume One: Pop Go The Beatles NEW!

Back in the day, the Beatles ruled, and with good reason. I’m not sure anyone could appreciate how tight a musical band they really were for their time. Even to this day, people who think the computerized shit produced in this generation is actually music and the Beatles didn’t have a clue. That’s a load of bullshit. And by the way, real musicians do not share the fickle public’s opinions. Neither do we. All of these songs were recorded live at BBC Studios between during June, July and August of 1963…before Beatlemania took hold.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1965, and became one of the premier psychedelic rock bands. The band’s hallmarks were extended compositions, sound experimentation, cosmic lyrics, and rather elaborate live shows. They were true pioneers of the progressive rock sound.

7:00 p.m. The Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, November 9, 1972

The Moody Blues were formed in Birmingham, England in 1964, and initially came to prominence playing R & B music. Early on, they fused rock with classical, and became pioneers of what is known as art rock. Their album Days of Future Passed is considered one of the earliest successful concept albums.

This would be a jolly good day to tune us in for the first time, I might add. Join your fellow listeners from Germany, the UK, Norway, the Russian Federation, France, and points beyond who tune in as the U.S. goes to sleep!
