Good Morning, Musicologists. Yes, it’s still morning. We’re a little later than usual kicking this off but every now and then what is known as “the real world” takes center stage. We try to keep that to a minimum here.

Yes, The early years, when the Fab Four was in its infancy. But even back then, they were a force, no matter what the morons listening to the garbage being made today tell you. They were a really tight band even back then, and were doing things that nobody else was doing. We’ve even got some alternative takes and unreleased music in this particular playlist, so enjoy.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

Surely one of the most iconic musicians of the sixties right here. Sometimes he falls under the radar, but he shouldn’t. We used to call him Mr. Cosmic when we were yunguns.

8:00 p.m. Badfinger Live at The Cowtown Ballroom, Kansas City, Missouri, April 7, 1972

Perhaps the only bona fide star power band ever signed by The Beatles for Apple Records, Badfinger made some great power pop music in its day. Betrayed by their manager and royally fucked over, their ending was a sad one with two members committing suicide. But they left us a great musical legacy and we love them here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We Debut “Willy & The Poor Boys” as Our Album of The Week Before Turning It Over To The Women of Music, Sunday, May 16, 2021

Sunday, as you know, is our long-playlist day and it’s the ladies’ turn today. But before that, we debut Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy & The Poor Boys as our Album of The Week.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Willy & The Poor Boys by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

The year 1969 was certainly a prolific one for Creedence. Willy & The Poor Boys was the third and final album (and their fourth overall) released that year, coming on the heels of Green River, another fine album. (Cosmo’s Factory was the other release.)

Today we give you the 40th anniversary edition of the album because it has a couple of live versions thrown in along with the great Down On The Corner jam with the incomparable Booker T & The MGs, who also appear throughout the album.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

After CCR, we turn it over to the women of rock, who still get the short end of the stick to this day. After her many years of contribution to music, Carole King just this year made it into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, as we induct rappers into a HOF that is supposed to be about rock n’ roll, not rap. Pisses me off. Aside from Carole King, you’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Nicolette Larson, Maria Muldaur, Wendy Waldman, Eva Cassidy, Valerie Carter, and many, many more. If you’re a misogynist, this is definitely not your venue. We are honoring our commitment to highlighting the ladies.

We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and this particular live recording is new to us here. Gram Parsons didn’t live long enough to really reach his potential, but we believe it was limitless and that he left us a great musical legacy.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III FINAL AIRING!

We say farewell to this album after today’s airing, the final Stone Poneys album before Linda Ronstadt launches into her meteoric career and her decade reign as the Queen of Rock. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album for you.

Yes, they were the Stax Records house band, but they were so much more than that. They were a force in the music world and, once you pay attention to them, it’s easy to see why Tom Petty and his bandmates were so smitten with them.

Friday Brings The Big Voice of Valerie Carter, and The Heartbreakers As Cover Band, May 14, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a lot of Open Stream today but we do bring you the wonder that is Valerie Carter, a woman whose career was her own but who also loaned her vocal talents to many others.

I remember the first time I heard Valerie Carter. It was sometime in the seventies when my friends and I were literally traveling around like vagabonds following our favorite bands and singers to every live venue we could get to. I also remember that I wished Valerie Carter would show up at one of them. I eventually did see Valerie perform with Linda Ronstadt at the Orpheum Theatre. The combination of the two of them was like the second coming for me. Let’s never forget that Valerie Carter helped out her fellow musicians with that voice, but that she also had her own voice.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under The Covers

There’s no denying that The Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, and that Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. They were more than that, however. They were also one of the greatest cover bands ever, and loved to toss in remakes of others’ songs during their live performances in tribute to their favorite performers. We have two of these playlists, but in this one you’ll hear The Heartbreakers cover The Bobby Fuller Four, Bob Dylan, They Byrds, The Clash, J. J. Cale, and many more.

It’s Friday here in The Mermaid Lounge. We know tomorrow is our usual busy Saturday of programming, so we give you just a couple of quality playlists today interspersed in all that great Open Stream.

A very young Linda Ronstadt and her band, The Stone Poneys, released their third and final album on April 29, 1968. Capitol Records was beginning to realize Ronstadt’s potential and put her front and center on the cover, which would increase tensions in the band. On this album, she began to branch out, choosing songs written by the great Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro. The following year, she would release her first solo album. The rest, as they say, is history. Tensions notwithstanding, Kenny Edwards would become a fixture in her solo backup band for many years.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

We bring back one of our best long playlists today featuring bands from the British Invasion right on up to Queen. You will also hear Them (featuring Van Morrison), The Searchers, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles (of course), The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, Cream, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Herman’s Hermits, and more!

One of the world’s greatest performers at one of the world’s most vaunted venues right here. I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt in several small venues in Boston in my lifetime. There’s nothing like that experience.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Our second to last airing of this fine album. Our final will be on Saturday. Catch it while you can, folks! Jesse Winchester is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

We haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so it’s a great time to break it out. I’ll say it again, Van Morrison is an insufferable cad. Don’t believe a word that comes from his mouth when he tells you he’s fighting for your freedom when he wants to pack in the tour venues during COVID-19. What he wants to do is line his pocket. I’ve also seen Van several times and he’s not exactly the nicest guy on stage either. But his music? One of the very best here.

Tune us in, folks. We are most definitely not-for-profit, and that is tough to find on the regular airwaves these days. Earlier this week, I drove in a U-Haul truck to move my daughter back to Boston. All they had was regular radio. I opted for silence instead.

This is an occasional feature here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hard Promises, released on May 5, 1981. It’s hard to imagine an album this good coming right on the heels of The Heartbreakers’ breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes! (last week’s Album of The Week, by the way), but it did.

It’s true that The Waiting was the anchor of Hard Promises, but there’s also A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me), Nightwatchman, A Thing About You, Something Big, Insider (featuring Stevie Nicks), and one of my favorite Heartbreaker songs of all time, Kings Road.

4:00 p.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This is nearly three hours of the music that originally inspired me to start this crazy endeavor to begin with. It is due for an upgrade soon, but it’s still one of the best playlists we feature with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Animals, The Byrds, The Who, The Chambers Brothers, The Temptations, John Lennon, T. We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. Just tune in, turn on, and drop out.
