The Heartbreakers on a leg of their High Grass Dogs Tour.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The chemistry of this band is beyond amazing. They have it firing on all eight cylinders each and every outing. It’s Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s more where this came from.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat NEW!

Again, the most underrated band in rock music because they defy definition. Little Feat is an eclectic combination of rock and roll, blues, boogie, country, folk, soul, New Orleans R&B, and swamp music. Waiting for Columbus was recorded over seven live performances during 1977. The venues were The Rainbow Theatre in London, and George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Although I generally don’t give a shit what critics think, it should be duly noted that critics widely believe this is one of the finest live albums in music history. And for once, I agree with their position.

The Heartbreakers were not only the best rock n’ roll band I’ve ever experienced, but they were also the best cover band. They loved to add ‘oldies’ for their live shows, even instrumental recreations like Goldfinger and Booker T’s Green Onions, which happen to be two of my favorites. My first introduction to this was their inclusion of a very energetic version of Shout at the ’78 Boston show. Enjoy this playlist. It’s one of two we own. We will get to the other also.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Give It Up by Bonnie Raitt

The final airing of Bonnie Raitt’s excellent Give It Up, our Album of The Week. Tomorrow is a new day. And a new album.

The way it works for me is that any friend of Linda Ronstadt is a friend of mine. I have discovered so many strong female singers and songwriters that way, and Wendy Waldman is no exception. (Others have included Valerie Carter and Karla Bonoff.) If you haven’t heard Wendy Waldman sing yet, you’re in for a treat. The song to listen for is The Eagle and The Owl. She and Ronstadt sound amazing together.

It’s Alive All Day Long: Bob Dylan’s Rare Performances, Little Feat Live in London, and The Rolling Stones Live in San Jose, Monday, September 28, 2020

We haven’t had any live Dylan here for a while, and we must remedy that situation. This is one of the best that we’ve been able to dig up from the vault. It’s a good one.

3:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, August 2, 1977

Perhaps the most underrated band in rock music history. Little Feat was impossible to pidgeonhole, a brilliant combination of the blues, country, rhythm & blues, and good old fashioned rock n’roll. I saw them a few times before Lowell George’s untimely death, and they never, ever disappointed.

7:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones From The Vault, Live at San Jose Arena, April 19-20, 1999

Mick and the boys tear it up in San Jose. Another band that has stood the test of time, and is still tearing it up on stage, people.

We’re a day late, but today we are celebrating Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair’s 72nd birthday (yesterday). He was an original founding member of the group who left, then came back after the death of Howie Epsein.

Their concert in 2002 after the release of The Last DJ, and turned out to be one of their strongest concerts ever.

In my book (and in that of many others), the finest supergroup ever. Five big-time guys who were friends and liked making music together without ego. Bob Dylan (Lucky Wilbury), George Harrison (Nelson Wilbury), Tom Petty (Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.), Roy Orbison (Lefty Wilbury), and Jeff Lynne (Otis Wilbury) are the Traveling Wilburys. (By the way, after Orbison’s death, their names changed for the next release. But you can get all the fun details about names if you click the above link!)

Veteran percussionist and drummer, Jim Keltner (Buster Sidebury) was in the seat from beginning to end. Dhani Harrison contributed overdubs on Maxine and Like A Ship, and is credited as Ayerton Wilbury.

Today is Wilbury Wednesday, and you get the entire catalogue.
