Good Morning, Music Lovers, and welcome to our usual frenzied Saturday of programming. We have a wild one today, including our very first live performance from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 40th Anniversary Tour!

This is the very first airing of any of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 40th Anniversary Tour, and this one comes from Dallas. We have a lot of TPATH live performances here in The Mermaid Lounge, but this is the first time we are airing anything from that final tour.

Yet another never-before-heard-here performance by the master of all jam bands, The Dead. This one is from one of my favorite cities, New Orleans.

Again, I will say that this is a great day to find out what we’re all about. Saturday is our busiest programming day, yet this represents only just over seven hours of music that we stream in a 24-hour day. It’s Wilbury Wednesday, and We’ve Also Got Bonnie Raitt In the Spotlight and Our ‘Nothing But Heartbreak’ Playlist Later, June 9, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a Wilbury Wednesday on tap, along with some Bonnie Raitt and our Nothing But Heartbreak Playlist on tap sprinkled in all that Open Stream.

I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt quite a few times. She, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris saved my sanity during the seventies. We drove just about everywhere to see them…Portland, Maine; Worcester, Mass; the Providence Civic Center in Rhode Island; and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York.

But one of the best memories I have was in a little bar in Cambridge, Massachusetts while we were watching John Lincoln Wright & The Sourmash Boys and we caught a glimpse of a young Bonnie Raitt sitting near the piano. When she got up on stage and sang with them, it was like heaven. Today, we put Bonnie Raitt In the Spotlight, but she has always been in mine. (And did I mention she’s one badass guitarist?)

3:00 p.m WILBURY WEDNESDAY! The Traveling Wilburys: The Bootleg Collection

Though short-lived, the Wilburys have distinguished themselves as the premier ‘supergroup’ on the planet. Every time I see a poll done on those music websites, they are overwhelmingly voted number one by musicologists. And I concur wholeheartedly. For those who still don’t know The Traveling Wilburys: George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne made some incredible music together. Only Lynne and Dylan remain on the planet, but their music lives on.

7:00 p.m. Nothing But Heartbreak: Various Artists

Heartbreak appears to be my specialty in life. I am well-versed in the craft, and have decided that I’m giving up all this love stuff. It was in the middle of my last heartbreak that I built this playlist. It’s a great collection, and I hope you all enjoy my misery.

Mudcrutch is known as Tom Petty’s “other” band, but it was actually Tom Petty’s first band…the band that left Gainesville for L.A., the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. When Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back together in 2008, it wasn’t just a diversion for him. Mudcrutch made some serious music, and we’ve got the entire catalogue here today.

It’s Memorial Day here and the only thing we’re celebrating today is music. No parades. No flag waving. None of that nonsense. Just music. Tune us in if you’re hanging around looking for something to do. You won’t regret it.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live at The Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on The Last DJ tour. You know how the music critics are. Albums with a great collection of songs are not good enough anymore. They all have to have a “concept” behind them. But that is exactly what The Last DJ is: A great collection of songs amidst Petty’s lament about what radio has become. And as someone who grew up with a transistor glued to my right ear listening to AM radio (which was where the best music was at the time), WMEX in Boston, I can empathize wholeheartedly. This is a great performance, people.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Wallflowers by The Wallflowers FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of The Wallflowers. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, there will be a brand new selection. And although we have it chosen, we give you no hints.

7:00 p.m. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash: In Session, Nashville 1969

Back when Bob Dylan was recording Nashville Skyline, he got together with another master named Johnny Cash and they recorded a bunch of songs. Only one, Girl From The North Country, made it to Nashville Skyline. This is the result of that recording session.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at McArthur Court, The University of Oregon, Eugene, January 22, 1978 NEW!

Tonight we have The Grateful Dead live from McArthur Court at The University of Oregon, another new-to-us LIVE performance for one of the most masterful live bands in the history of music.

We don’t do a lot of soft rock in The Mermaid Lounge, but these guys made some of the best. And albums like Homecoming (which also did time as our Album of The Week a while ago), Holiday, and their debut album (especially) were great. They get a place at our table. America was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, all of whom were sons of U.S. Air Force members. Fun fact: Dan Peek (the middle guy) went on to a career in Christian music. You won’t hear that here.

10:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan

We continue our Dylan birthday tribute with an album that is not our album of the week, John Wesley Harding which was released in 1967. Tomorrow will be our final Dylan tribute for his 80th birthday celebration.

As you may (or may not) know, Jakob Dylan recently announced that there will be a brand new Wallflowers album for the first time in nine years. I just happened to catch a pre-release of one of the songs and it was great. It inspired me to make their 1992 debut release our Album of The Week this week. This is a pretty damned fine band. All songs were composed by Jakob Dylan with the exception of one, and he assisted on that one.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists

One of our favorite playlists here in The Mermaid Lounge is afoot today, and you’ll hear Odetta, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bonnie Raitt, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty,, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Ton Rush, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Tim Hardin and many more.

Sunday, as you know, is our long-playlist day and it’s the ladies’ turn today. But before that, we debut Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy & The Poor Boys as our Album of The Week.

The year 1969 was certainly a prolific one for Creedence. Willy & The Poor Boys was the third and final album (and their fourth overall) released that year, coming on the heels of Green River, another fine album. (Cosmo’s Factory was the other release.)

Today we give you the 40th anniversary edition of the album because it has a couple of live versions thrown in along with the great Down On The Corner jam with the incomparable Booker T & The MGs, who also appear throughout the album.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

After CCR, we turn it over to the women of rock, who still get the short end of the stick to this day. After her many years of contribution to music, Carole King just this year made it into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, as we induct rappers into a HOF that is supposed to be about rock n’ roll, not rap. Pisses me off. Aside from Carole King, you’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Nicolette Larson, Maria Muldaur, Wendy Waldman, Eva Cassidy, Valerie Carter, and many, many more. If you’re a misogynist, this is definitely not your venue. We are honoring our commitment to highlighting the ladies.

I remember the first time I heard Valerie Carter. It was sometime in the seventies when my friends and I were literally traveling around like vagabonds following our favorite bands and singers to every live venue we could get to. I also remember that I wished Valerie Carter would show up at one of them. I eventually did see Valerie perform with Linda Ronstadt at the Orpheum Theatre. The combination of the two of them was like the second coming for me. Let’s never forget that Valerie Carter helped out her fellow musicians with that voice, but that she also had her own voice.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under The Covers

There’s no denying that The Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, and that Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. They were more than that, however. They were also one of the greatest cover bands ever, and loved to toss in remakes of others’ songs during their live performances in tribute to their favorite performers. We have two of these playlists, but in this one you’ll hear The Heartbreakers cover The Bobby Fuller Four, Bob Dylan, They Byrds, The Clash, J. J. Cale, and many more.
