Good morning, musicologists! We are on the cusp of the weekend and we’ve got three great pieces of programming for you today, starting with some new ‘live’ music from one of our favorites, Steely Dan!
Here’s your end-of-the-work-week lineup:
10:00 a.m. Steely Dan Live at The Nissan Pavillion, Bristow, VA, July 21, 1996 NEW!
Undoubtedly one of the best bands to come out of the seventies. This was a stop on their very ambitious Art Crimes Tour, and many consider this performance one of their best-ever shows. Give it a listen.
4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Beach Boys
We haven’t cued this one up in a while. Is there a better band that signifies the sounds of summer? We don’t think so. And then, there’s the genius of Brian Wilson.
8:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue: Various Artists
We had a handful of these shorter shows from the ladies and, eventually, we rolled them into ‘Ladies Day Out’ and added even more! These come in handy when we need a fix. You’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Jackie DeShannon, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins and more!
I’m here listening with you until retail hell calls, when The Music Mermaid will take over and help you through the afternoon. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. And there’s absofuckinglutely no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music.
Good morning, musicologists! We’ve got a great lineup today and once again it’s all begins with the sixties. We’ve also got Springsteen and the concert that launched Greenpeace.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bruce Springsteen
This afternoon we put The Boss squarely In the Spotlight, the man who pioneered working-class heartland rock.
8:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell with James Taylor and Phil Ochs, Live at The Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, October 10, 1970
This is the concert that launched Greenpeace. The concert featured Joni Mitchell with her boyfriend at the time, James Taylor, and folk legend Phil Ochs in a performance that funded the organization’s protests of the 1971 nuclear weapons tests conducted by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Amchitka Island, Alaska.
It’s a good day to be here, people. We have what we hope to be one final summer gasp today as the temps have finally begun to moderate back into the seventies. Inside, however, we bring the heat from a musical perspective. The button’s below.
We’ve got all sixties programming going on today with volume two of our ‘Sixties Rotation’ EP to start things off, followed by some ‘live’ Janis Joplin and the Jefferson Airpane.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Jefferson Airplane
We close out today’s sixties programming with one of the bands that helped to define the San Francisco psychedelic music sound as we put Grace Slick and The Jefferson Airplane In the Spotlight!
It’s all sixties today, and that’s a good thing. It’s the music that helped to inspire us to start this radio station. We’re on 24/7 and you’d be hard pressed to hear a repeat during any given day. We’re also totally free of charge and free of commercial advertising. What could be better?
Good morning, music lovers everywhere! It’s time for the weekenders in The Lounge and we’re ready to kick things off in fine form today with our House EP!
Here’s today’s weekenders’ lineup:
9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists
The first few playlists we ever put together here were a bunch of smaller ones that we eventually wove into this masterpiece of the music that inspired the station. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, The Band and more!
4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: North South by Paul Butterfield Blues Band FINAL AIRING!
This is the farewell airing for this album. Tomorrow when you roll yourselves out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.
8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Brian Wilson NEW!
Brian Wilson is considered a genius in songwriting circles for many reasons, one of which is his novel approaches to pop music composition. There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the most innovative and influential songwriters of his generation. He also happens to be the co-founder of The Beach Boys, and that is certainly what he is best known for. Today we pay him respects as both because you wouldn’t have one without the other.
Join us as we kick off the weekend in style in just over an hour! There’s plenty of room in The Lounge. We’re open 24/7 and there’s no cover charge either.
Good morning, weekenders! It’s another keep-it-simple Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got our Laurel Canyon EP to take you through the afternoon and evenng. But before that we’ve got a great new AOW from The Lovin’ Spoonful who, of course, were a part of that Laurel Canyon music scene!
Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Hums of The Lovin’ Spoonful by The Lovin’ Spoonful NEW!
This is the band’s third studio album (and fourth overall), released in 1966 by Kama Sutra Records, and peaking at #14 on the charts. The album fulfilled the band’s desire to record in a variety of musical genres, including pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk. It was also the last full project by the original lineup. The album spawned four single releases, including the number one hit Summer In The City. Rain On The Roof, Nashvile Cats and Full Measure would also make the charts.
3:00 p.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists
This particular playlist is about to undergo an upgrade, but for now, the original is still pretty great. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and more!
It’s a great day to kick off your shoes, put your feet up and join us! Why not? It’s an official day of rest, is it not? Of course it is. We’re on 24/7 without interruption from commercial advertising, and we do not require a ‘subscription.’ All you need to do is click on the button below to entire your musical nirvana zone.
Good Morning, Music Lovers! We hope we can brighten your work-week start today with some great music. It’s summertime, and we’ve got some brand new music for you.
We officially kick off summer with a brand new playlist today!
Here’s your Monday programming:
11:00 a.m. Summertime: Various Artists NEW!
This is the beginning of a week where we feature some new music. We start here with our new ‘Summertime’ playlist. We’ve got songs with the word summer, summertime, and variations thereof in the title but, if you listen closely, you’ll hear some surf music in there as well. You’ll hear from Paul McCartney, Electric Light Orchestra, Eddie Cochran, Joni Mitchell, Sly & The Family Stone, Poco, The Blue Stingrays, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Jimmy Cliff, Joan Baez, Foo Fighters, Donovan, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Nina Simone, John Prine, Johnny Rivers, Gary Hoey, The Desert Rose Band, Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, The Stone Poneys, Chrissie Hynde, Bob Dylan, The Surfaris, Nanci Griffith, and more!
4:00 p.m. Badfinger: Live at The BBC Studios, 1972-1973
Today’s live music offering is Badfinger, a true power pop band that made some great music in its time. Today we’ve got them live at BBC Studios in London recorded in 1972 and 1973. Undoubtedly the best signing ever by Apple Records.
7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Joni Mitchell
It’s been a spell since we featured Joni Mitchell In the Spotlight, so we’re remedying that little miscue today. She’s kind of the sound of summer in a way. We’ve always loved Joni’s music here in The Mermaid Lounge. She is one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters on the planet.
Come on. It’s Monday. And we all know Monday’s suck. I’ve been sick with COVID for a second time here and I return to retail hell myself tomorrow, so why not join me today in kicking back and enjoying some great tunes.
Here we are with our usual frenetic Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we wish you a great Good Morning. We’ve got some really cool stuff on tap, including a brand new playlist called Repeat After Me.
Today we’ve got a great new playlist of remakes and reboots along with the originals!
Here’s your Saturday line-up!
11:00 a.m. Repeat After Me: Various Artists NEW!
I was driving home from work when this idea came into my head and I wondered what the hell took me so long. I also have to tell you that I somehow feel this is simply the first volume. I thought of even more this morning. Here we have some great songs that have also been the beneficiaries of great remakes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that is certainly the case in the music world. The best want to remake and pay tribute to the best songwriters and performers who have inspired their own music.
The playlist for this volume will be in the blog under the “Playlist” tab. Just click on it and scroll to the bottom.
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan FINAL AIRING!
This is the final airing of this great album. Get on it while you can. Tomorrow, we’ve got a brand new album to feature, and it’s one that just got its 50th Anniversary edition to boot!
7:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays
Last summer we added surf music to our repertoire, but we’ve not given it much of an audience this summer, regrettably I might add. As we work on the Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to play Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays. There’s a story behind this one. This band made one album, although the liner notes called them the premier surf music band of the sixties (when surf music first burst onto the music scene). The band is actually Mike Campbell and Ron Blair (of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Randall Marsh (drummer for Mudcrutch, another Tom Petty band). The did this anonymously because they didn’t want to detract from The Heartbreakers meteoric rise of 1997, the year the album was released. They didn’t particularly care if it even sold a copy (which it did; I have one). They did it because they love the sound of surf music.
The album was just picked up and re-released a few weeks ago. If you are a lover of guitars (and of Mike Campbell, simply one of the best guitarists on the planet), then there’s something about surf guitar music that can’t be explained. Tune it in and see for yourself.
10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, California, July 1, 1973
This is one of the few repeat performances we’ve played since starting LIVE DEAD three years ago, but it also hasn’t been aired since 2019. It’ll be like new, just like every live performance The Dead has done. We have several brand new never-before-played concerts in the bucket. We just need to get them ready.
Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge is pretty busy, and this one is no different. Give us a shot. We’ve got listeners from allover this morning, including Italy, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, The Russian Federation, Romania, Spain and even The Republic of Korea. We’re sitting here waiting on the U.S. (although we do have someone from North Carolina and someone from Texas this morning). Tune us in. Get with the damned program.
Good Morning, Musicologists! We wind up our tribute to the music of Louisiana, and New Orleans specifically, with a live performance by one of the most respected bands in The Big Easy. And that isn’t all for Saturday.
Today’s music from New Orleans is courtesy of BeauSoleil!
Here’s our Saturday line-up:
11:00 a.m. BeauSoleil Live in Louisiana!
A lot of New Orleans music is steeped in history, but there are modern-day bands playing all over the streets of The Big Easy every day. BeauSoleil is one of the more recent bands to make their mark. This is a collection of live performances from a number of locations in Louisiana. We think you’ll enjoy their style.
3:00 p.m. Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists
Another of those historical music “scenes” is Laurel Canyon. Here, bands like CSNY, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Beach Boys, The Byrds and The Buffalo Springfield developed their sounds. The British Invasion resonated with these bands, and these bands also had a creative effect on their friends across the pond. You’ll hear these bands plus Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, The Doors, and The Mamas & The Papas.
7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Take A Little Walk With Me by Tom Rush FINAL AIRING!
Today we’ll have the final airing of Tom Rush’s Take A Little Walk With Me, released in 1966. Tomorrow when you wake up, there’ll be a new Album of The Week.
10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Red Rocks, Morrison, Colorado, September 6, 1985 NEW!
Another new live concert performance from the masters of jam. As I continue to say, no two performances are ever the same…even when they happen on the same tour.
It’s Saturday, people. It’s time to kick back and enjoy some really great music from a really great radio station. That would be ours.
Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have a very busy Saturday on tap here, but I promise you that you will love it. Shortly after the final airing of Learning To Crawl, we’re Going to Surf City! It gets even better from there!
Here’s your Saturday line-up:
9:00 a.m. Album of the Week: Learning To Crawl, The Pretenders
Farewell to one of my favorites. Tomorrow when you wake up and run to the blog for your daily dose, you’ll see a brand new album!
12:00 p.m. Going to Surf City: Various Artists NEW!
A mix of singing and instrumental surf songs: The Beach Boys, Dick Dale & His Deltones (photo), The Surfaris, Jan and Dean, The Trashmen, The Challengers, and others. This is your introduction to the king of surf guitar, Dick Dale. It won’t be the last time you hear from him!
5:00 p.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists
In light of the present civil unrest sweeping the globe, let’s pay homage to those who chronicle the tales and seek to inspire. Hear The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Band, and more!
10:00 p.m. Live Dead: Europe ’72, Live at the Beat Club, Bremen, West Germany, April 21, 1972 NEW!
We are back on Europe ’72 for a bit. This gig at The Beat Club is famous for being the shortest show on the tour. That’s because it was recorded for television airing.
This would be the perfect day to join us, don’t you think!
Good Morning, Ungovernables! If you read the CD cover, The Blue Stingrays were the most famous surf band in history. Their legend is all spelled out. We introduce them to you today.
Here’s your Saturday line up!
12:00 p.m. Album of the Week: On The Border by The Eagles
The final airing of our Album of the Week, On The Border. Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a brand new album!
5:00 p.m. #SurfMusic is Back! Introducing the Blue Stingrays! NEW!
When you look at the album cover, Surf N’Burn looks like a classic surf band album. In reality, it’s a 1997 release from The Heartbreakers without Mr. Petty. There is plenty of genuine surf guitar reverb here, masterfully played by one of the giants of guitar, Mike Campbell. He does Dick Dale (whom we will also be hearing soon) proud.
The give-away for me was the instrumental Goldfinger, which appeared on Surf N’Burn, a tune that the Heartbreakers played many times during their live shows in the 90s.
10:00 p.m. Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at Foxboro Stadium, Foxboro, MA, July 14, 1990 NEW!
The Dead visit the Boston area and play Foxboro (not fucking Gillette) Stadium, before all the corporate entities started buying up the names.
Tune us in. We’re outside the system and we’re free. Forever.
