Our New “Between Heaven & Hell” Playlist Debuts, We Hear From The Beatles, and Irma Thomas in In The Spotlight, Monday, November 30, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers. We’ve got some really good stuff going on today, particularly with our new playlist kicking it all off at noon.

This is what we’re taught. Personally, I think we’re already in hell.

We’ve got some real interesting songs in this one. Some stuff I know I’ve never put in a playlist before. Includes songs from Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, ZZ Top, Lucinda Williams, Roberta Flack, and others! it’s a good one.

4:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Early Years

We certainly don’t play enough of our co-House Band here. But all of this stuff I research has made me understand that sometimes we forget just how fucking good they were. But Bob Dylan? He knew:

“We were driving through Colorado, we had the radio on, and eight of the Top 10 songs were Beatles songs…’I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ all those early ones. They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.”

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Irma Thomas

Somehow, there are those great singers who fall through the cracks when they should be much bigger. Irma Thomas is such a singer. She is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, and she is known as The Soul Queen of New Orleans.

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got our usual (mostly) Open Stream Wednesday. But beyond that, we’ve got single-origin programming today from our other house band.

These are previously unreleased sessions of The Beatles during the recording of the Let It Be album, a rare inside-the-studio look at the fab four at work.

7:00 p.m. Not the Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles

Let It Be the way it was meant to be heard, stripped down without the wall of sound. Before Phil Spector got his grubby little fingers on it. It’s not that I don’t like the original album. I own it. But when this was released, a great album became even better.

On a cold, windy day in January Beatle fans in London were treated to a free, impromptu concert by the band from the top of Apple Records headquarters at 3 Saville Row. People were hanging out windows and stood on balconies. Down below, the traffic came to a halt. A splendid time was guaranteed for all.

Some of the best stuff we have is archival discoveries and, while they may not exactly be technically perfect, it doesn’t matter. A young Bonnie Raitt is hanging out with some friends here an they are conducting a textbook super session. Her youthful versions of Jackson Browne’s Under the Falling Sky and Chris Smither’s Love Me Like a Man are really great,  but her version of Blind Faith’s Can’t Find My Way Home is the most amazing. 

When you toss in Lowell George, the grand master of Little Feat, John Hammond and Freebo, you’ve got a super group. Who is Freebo? His real name is Daniel Friedberg, and he’s legend in my generation, a super studio musician who has spent a lot of time supporting Bonnie Raitt. Freebo has also played with Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, John Mayall and many other musicians.

The Revolver album signaled what was to come from the Beatles. It was a giant LEAP forward for the band in so many areas. This album is widely considered the most influential album in modern music. Find out why by tuning in.

7:00 p.m.     Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session,  Recorded Live at CHCH-TV on December 6, 1983

Two blues masters were recorded live at CHCH-TV studios in Hamilton, Ontario, when SRV was 29 years old and King was 60. You can read more about this legendary blues session right here.

We’re putting a caption here because you probably won’t recognize these guys. But The Electric Prunes made one of the greatest psychedelic songs of the sixties. You’ll have to tune in tonight to find out what it is.

11:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: Revolver by The Beatles   NEW!

Revolver was the seventh studio album by The Beatles, the greatest band in rock n’ roll history. It resulted in the double A-side single of Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine. It was also the Beatles’ last recording project before their retirement as a touring band. This album was amazing on so many levels, and it signaled a metamorphosis in the Beatles’ music going forward. Many articles have been written about the album, all worth reading. In short, it is considered one of the most influential releases in modern music history because of the vast range of musical styles covered and the technology employed. The songwriting also took a leap forward. Although much is made of Harrison’s later contributions to The Beatles’ repertoire, Taxman was actually George Harrison’s breakthrough song.

1:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday, The Byrds   NEW!

This was The Byrds’ fourth studio album, released in February of 1967. With this album, they continued their foray into psychedelic music…with a touch of jazz thrown in for good measure. Chris Hillman began to take the spotlight, revealing himself to be a formidable singer-songwriter.

4:00 p.m.   The Beatles: The Transformative Years

The Beatles also moved into the world of psychedelic music in the latter half of the sixties. The album Revolver was really the album that catapulted the band forward in this direction. This is a great playlist.

8:00 p.m.   Janis Joplin Live at Winterland 1968

To close out the evening’s festivities, we hear from one of the most important, influential female rockers of the sixties live on stage at Winterland, Janis Joplin.

Probably the most iconic album released during the Summer of Love phase was this brilliant effort by The Beatles. They would follow this up later with Magical Mystery Tour, but this one was a tough act to follow.

3:00 p.m.     Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions   NEW!

Elvis Aaron Presley, known simply as Elvis, passed away at Graceland 43 years ago yesterday. Elvis was the inspiration for many of the musicians we are celebrating on this radio station. And that’s why we celebrate him today.

7:00 p.m.     The Summer of Love Playlist, Volume 1

There were many players during the Summer of Love, and many may not make it to the spotlight. Nevertheless, they gave us some great music. Both The Beatles and The Doors had two album releases in 1967. This was the second for The Doors and it is most definitely Album of the Week-worthy even though we did feature it once last week. So, here it is again!

This is always my favorite Sunday of the month. The only question ever is do I choose Volume 1 or Volume 2. Today, the decision was easy because it’s everything the latter part of the sixties were about musically. Features The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, The Mamas & The Papas, Donovan, The Zombies, and so much more.
