We’ve Got Some Drivin’ Songs, Badass Guitarists, and Our New Album of The Week by Jeff Lynne and ELO, Sunday, January 24, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got some great ‘various artist’ streams today, and our new Album of The Week by The Electric Light Orchestra!

Speaking of badass guitarists…

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Face The Music by The Electric Light Orchestra NEW!

Face The Music was ELO’s fifth studio album, led by musical genius Jeff Lynne. While Eldorado took a more classical approach, Lynne here moved the band into a more radio-accessible style of music (although the strings remained prominent). It is the first Platinum album for ELO. Lynne would later produce Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Petty called him the best producer on the planet), and join Petty in The Traveling Wilburys. He still continues on with ELO today.

3:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Drivin’ Songs, Various Artists

Essentially, what we have here are songs that give me what we used to call ‘lead foot’ on the highway. Let’s see if these match up with yours. You will hear The Eagles, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Van Morrison, The Pretenders, The Doobie Brothers, Mudcrutch, Deep Purple. Blind Faith, and more!

7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume One: Various Artists

We have a second volume of this also and we’re working on a third, but we haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so here it is. We have Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, The Yardbirds, Steely Dan, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, and Aerosmith in this multi-artist playlist.

Remember, music lovers, wrapped around all of this programming we still have the vast majority of hours dedicated to open stream. We are circulating songs 24/7, totally free, no credit card required, and no personal information requested. Just give us your ears. (Not literally.)

It’s Our Usual (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday. Then, The Stones and The Shadow Drop In Later, January 20, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are on the run this morning, so you’ll have to wait for your rock n’ roll college lesson until later when I return from retail hell. But, in the meantime, here’s your musical line-up.

The Rolling Stones.

Here’s your line-up:

All Day (Mostly) Open Stream, Kids

By now, you know the drill. We are circulating continually all day, all night, 27,000 songs. Our Music Mermaid can even pick up a couple of programs if she so desires. It’s all on her on Wednesdays.

5:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Rolling Stones

The original bad boys of rock n’ roll (forget Aerosmith, it was these guys) are here later in the day for your listening pleasure. And I seriously mean that.

9:00 p.m. The Shadow: 08 Murder by The Dead

Vengeance from the grave. Until, of course, The Shadow figures this shit out. And he always does. By the way, this was one of the most popular radio shows of all time.

So, have at it. Enjoy your open stream day today, and we will be back later with some programming and, of course, your lesson from The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday! We Have The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at Boston’s Unicorn Coffee House, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues, and Dylan’s AOW, January 19, 2021

Good Morning, Blues Lovers! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got a pretty damned good line-up for today.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, Spring 1966

We go back to 1966 here for one of the best in he business live in Boston at the old Unicorn Coffee House. No alcohol. Coffee and music provided the fuel. Tom Rush recorded his first album here. Only 600 copies were pressed. Others who sang here were Bonnie Raitt, the J. Geils Band, Bonnie Raitt, Phil Ochs, and Tim Hardin. The Unicorn was owned by George Papadopoulous, who also owned the Psychedelic Supermarket, which was across the street from what is now the Hynes Convention Center. Boston has a long history of great small music venues. You can read about Unicorn and the others a bit here.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan

This is the first album of original Dylan music since 2012’s Tempest, and it is well worth a listen. The guy never ceases to amaze.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Tom Petty once said he envisioned the Heartbreakers as old men sitting in chairs playing and singing the blues together. I would have loved the opportunity to hear that. You’ll see why if you tune in this playlist tonight.

What in Buddha’s name are y’all waiting for? Europe and Asia are tuned in. America is, as usual, behind the curve.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Our House Blues Playlist and Linda Ronstadt’s WE RAN as Our Album of The Week, January 12, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists. It is definitely Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge with our house blues playlist, and with Linda Ronstadt dropping by later.

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues: Various Artists

This is a great, eclectic blues playlist that runs for just over four hours! You will hear Slim Harpo, Long John Baldry, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Buddy Guy, Cream, Foghat, Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Canned Heat, Delbert McClinton, and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt

Our second airing of what I consider to be one of Ronstadt’s most eclectic works, interpreting the songs of Bob Dylan (for the first time since early in her career), John Hiatt, Naomi Neville and others. The standout song? Undoubtedly, Ruler of My Heart. Brilliant.

Tune us in, people. We’re about to expand our general rotation again and you have no idea what you are missing! No other radio station rotates a 27,000-song playlist on its best day.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in the Lounge! We’ve Got The Blues Project at The Matrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan Live in Austin, and Joan Baez With Our AOW, January 5, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesicologists! It is indeed Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some new additions to our rotation and our playlists today!

The Blues Project makes its debut on #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Blues Project Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, September 1966 NEW!

The Blues Project formed in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1965, and consisted of Al Kooper (keyboards and vocals), Roy Blumenfeld (drums), Danny Kalb (guitar and vocals), Steve Katz (guitar and vocals), and Andy Kulberg (bass and flute). They were short-timers, lasting only two years, but they were very good. Al Kooper and Steve Katz moved on to form Blood, Sweat & Tears after their break up.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez

The second airing of this week’s featured album by 19-year-old Joan Baez.

7:00 p.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at The Austin Opera House, Texas, April 15, 1984

I was feeling the need to get Stevie Ray Vaughan back into the mix here on a Tuesday Bluesday, and we have him live from the Austin Opera House. Light the fire and put your feet up.

We are back in retail hell today, but we certainly hope we’ve left you in good hands. Remember, we’re free. We don’t ask you for a thing. Tune us in and see for yourself.

We’re Celebrating The End of 2020 With Van Morrison, Birthday Boy Jeff Lynne, A Special Edition of LIVE DEAD, and While We’re Celebrating, We’ll be ‘Under The Influence,” Thursday, December 31, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s the end of 2020 (happily), but we here in The Mermaid Lounge know better than to think 2021 is going to be much better. So, we’ve got music to soothe our souls. So do you. But only if you tune us in.

Happy 74th Birthday to Jeff Lynne (yesterday, actually). He’s In The Spotlight today!

Here’s today’s year-end line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Moondance by Van Morrison

We’re winding down on Van “The Man” Morrison’s brilliant masterpiece here. You have one more day to tune it in before we choose a new AOW.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Yes, we’ll be under the influence by this time today. I promise. Let’s face it, whether legal or illegal, we’ve all done it. Personally, I have no regrets. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, and more! Just over two hours of mind-altering music.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne NEW!

Yesterday was Jeff Lynne’s 74th birthday. Our celebration is, as they say, better late than never. We’ve got Jeff Lynne here with his Electric Light Orchestra, and as Otis Wilbury. Most people don’t realize that Jeff Lynne was also the band leader of The Move back in the sixties (one of my favorite British bands). That band morphed into ELO. We have some Move music in here as well. Lynne is also a multi-instrumentalist and producer, who has worked with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, George Harrison and, of course, The Traveling Wilburys, the best damned supergroup ever.

10:00 p.m. The New Year’s Eve Special Edition of Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Close Winterland, San Francisco, December 31, 1978 NEW!

On this particular New Year’s Eve, The Grateful Dead played their 48th and final show at Bill Graham’s Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It was one hell of a show.

This would be an EXCELLENT way to kick out the 2020 jams and start the New Year. We’re free. We’re fun. We don’t talk a lot, and we certainly don’t cut off songs with endless DJ chatter. We talk with our music. Join the fucking party.

Yes, it’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge and we have a full day of blues programming all lined up and ready to go. You’ll be enjoying it while I try to cope with the general purchasing public.

Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna.

Here’s today’s Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Hot Tuna Live at Sweetwater Music Hall, Mill Valley, CA, January 27 & 28, 1992 NEW!

Here we have two veterans of The Jefferson Airplane now singing the blues in Hot Tuna. On this night, they are joined by Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead on guitar and vocals, the very bluesy Maria Muldaur on vocals and tamborine and Pete Sears on piano and accordion. By the way, after this performance, Pete Sears would stay with Hot Tuna until 2000.

The second airing of our album of the week is up at 3:00 p.m. today.

Donovan In the Spotlight, Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore, and Van Morrison’s MOONDANCE is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, December 27, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a rather eclectic mix of programming from The Mermaid Lounge today, and we’re proud of it!

“I’d rather play a few nights at the Fillmore than one night at an arena” -Lucinda Williams

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Moondance by Van Morrison NEW!

We move from The Band’s Moondog Matinee to Van Morrison’s Moondance. There’s a certain unplanned symmetry to this selection. But this is undoubtedly one of the finest albums ever made in the history of popular music. It is more than a worthy selection as our Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

It has been a while since we heard from this guy. He certainly made some of the most memorable music of the sixties, and is one of my personal favorites.

7:00 p.m. Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, November 20-22, 2003 NEW!

These live songs were recorded over a three-night performance at The Fillmore in San Francisco on November 20, 21 and 22, 2003. Released in 2005, this was Lucinda’s first live album ever, and it’s a great one.

Beyond this, we’re on Open Stream, just as we are every single day with no advertising, no political talk, and no chatty DJ’s. We don’t cost a damned penny, we don’t ask for your credit card, and we do not require personal information. Just click on the link and see for yourselves.

Here’s today’s line-up:

You’ll hear the cream of the crop like, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., The Robert Cray Band, Willie Nelson, Joe Walsh, ZZ Top, Sheryl Crow, Doyle Bramhall II, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondog Matinee by The Band

Again, it’s kismet. This week’s Album of The Week, Moondog Matinee, just happens to be The Band’s homage to R & B and the blues. It fits just perfectly with today.

In between, we have Open Stream, uninterrupted by idle chatter and commercials, and seasoned with Three-in-a-Row’s from the likes of B.B. King, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers Band, and Lucinda Williams.
