Here’s a little blue-eyed soul for you. Dusty is undoubtedly one of the stars here in The Mermaid Lounge. And totally underrated overall.

Although John Mayall never achieved commercial success, he’s one of the most respected British bluesmen in the business. Even now his followers continue to grow. This compilation was released in 2007, but it encompasses all 12 of the BBC sessions recorded between 1965-1967, as well as two performances recorded on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975. Enjoy!

Derek & The Dominos, for those not in the know, is a British blues-rock band populated by Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle & Jim Gordon. Their live recordings come from two nights at The Fillmore East. If we were using the term ‘supergroup’ back in the day, this just might be one.

5:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris: Rare Tracks & Forgotten Gems

Here are some tunes you may have forgotten that Emmylou Harris did, some you didn’t know she did, and others she has done with her contemporaries. In short, it’s a great little playlist.

It’s only fitting that Tom Petty and his bandmates play a role in this great album. Tom Petty had more credibility in traditional country music than any other rocker on the planet. This one won Cash a Grammy.

If you had the opportunity to see The Heartbreakers live, then you know how good they actually were. Their chemistry as a band was off the fucking charts. This live interlude was recorded live over two shows: November 23, 1991 at the Lawlor Events Center and the University of Nevada, and November 24 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat

Time is running down on our Album of the Week. We have one more airing after today before a new album is chosen. So, be sure to tune this in. It’s one of the finest performances by any band at any time in music history.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Temptations NEW!

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (1986)

This was recorded over two nights on part of Dylan’s True Confessions tour. Tom Petty credits Dylan with teaching The Heartbreakers the importance of spontaneity on stage. These two guys were just great together. It’s amazing how many people Tom Petty was able to mesh with musically. That’s the sign of an artist comfortable in his own skin.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat

Again, some of the best live music ever pressed onto vinyl. Little Feat defied definition. And I will say it again: They are the most underrated band in rock music history.

She’s got dem old Kozmic Blues again, mama. And she’s belting them out here today.

Everyone knows Bonnie Raitt. My friend, George, and I used to hang out at Jonathan Swifts back in the day. We’d go there to see John Lincoln Wright & The Sourmash Boys, and Bonnie Raitt would sometimes be hanging in the corner just to the left of center stage in the audience. Sometimes she’d join them.

Give It Up is 23-year-old Bonnie Raitt singing the blues before her amazing crossover career exploded. But no matter what you hear coming from her, the blues are always in her DNA, and there’s no mistaking that amazing slide guitar.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of B.B. King NEW!

I dunno what you say about B.B. King, so I won’t even try. He was a singer, songwriter, record producer who once stated:

“I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions.”

Not only did he name his girl Lucille, but he did just what he wanted to do, developing his own style of blues soloing that influenced so many who came after him.

Don’t scratch your head. The Heartbreakers often sang the blues both live and on vinyl, and the original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band. We also have one late-night tradition we cannot break here.

There wasn’t any style of music The Heartbreakers couldn’t make, and they have a lot of bluesy music in their catalogue. Mr. Petty often said he envisioned the band sitting around in chairs playing the blues when they got too old to rock. I have absolutely no doubt they could have pulled that off. You won’t either after you hear this playlist.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King

7:00 p.m. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, February 1, 1970

Is there a better place to hear a blues band live? Maybe Chicago, but that’s about it. No, this is not the current Fleetwood Mac. The original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, baby. It might interest you to know that Black Magic Woman wasn’t a Santana song. It’s a Fleetwod Mac song.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, New York, June 27, 1985 NEW!

Here’s another band who could sing it all in their own unique style, and they often sang the blues on stage. This is our one non-blue Saturday night offering that will not be denied. The SPAC was one of our favorite musical venues when we were young. I remember packing up the car on the weekends and heading out to upstate New York. We’d camp (for lack of money) and spend what we had at SPAC. We saw many bands here and I have so many fond memories. Never got to see The Dead here, but the imagination still works.

This would be an immensely good day for you to use your index finger to tune us in. It’s really very simple and it’s completely free and without strings, if you can imagine that.

There is no question that this is a Robert Cray Band concert at Club Redux, but he’s joined on stage by Stevie Ray Vaughan at the end for an amazing jam and the encore performance of New Blood. Some of the best musical experiences come in small packages.

3:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, Spring 1966

Spring 1966 is the closest we can get to the actual date of this performance. This is one for the wayback machine of your mind. Boston had a pretty amazing music scene, I must say. The Unicorn Coffee House (the only beverage served), Club 47, Jonathan Swifts, among the best. We veterans of such places yearn for those days again.
