Happy Memorial Day Weekend, musicologists! We have excellent music lined up for you today as we get into the first official weekend of the summer season!

Today we bid a fond farewell to Buffalo Springfield’s debut album as our Album of the Week. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: Top 100 Countdown

We aired this last year at this time and we repeat the process today as we pay homage to one of our House Bands, the band that changed everything from haircuts, to clothing styles and, most importantly, to music itself in just seven years together. There was never a band like them before, and we are still waiting for their equal. From our perspective, that day will never come.

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Guy Clark NEW!

A Mermaid Lounge favorite for sure. On a freezing winter night in Harvard Square with my friends, we were looking for a break from the cold. We walked in to Passim’s Coffee House to warm up, sat down, and were treated to a very unexpected event. A singer-songwriter named Guy Clark was playing there live that night. We stuck around. It was an amazing revelation. We were certainly happy we did. The next day, I went out and bought everything I could find. Tonight, we introduce him as our featured singer-songwriter.

It’s a looong weekend, so kick your shoes off. We’ve got great music in store for you right through Monday. If you haven’t yet tuned us in, this would definitely be a good weekend to do it. We’re totally free 24/7, and we’re also totally free of commercial advertising. It’s just wall-to-wall music.

On This Keep-It-Simple Sunday, We’ve Got Our AOW by Buffalo Springfield and ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, May 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays with plenty of wide Open Stream, but we do have a great new AOW and our original sixties rotation.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Buffalo Springfield by Buffalo Springfield NEW!

Although Buffalo Springfield wasn’t satisfied with this album, recorded in the summer of 1966 at Gold Star Studios, this was a groundbreaking album in many respects. Five of the songs were written by a guy named Neil Young, but he only sang lead on one of those. Richie Furay sang lead on the rest. Their first release from the album did not catch on nationally, but did make the Top 40 in Los Angeles during the month of August. However, by December, Stephen Stills’ For What It’s Worth became a national hit. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Aside from Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, the band was rounded out by Bruce Palmer (bass guitar) and Dewey Martin (drums, backing vocals).

Our first sixties extended playlist with five uninterrupted hours of music from the early-to-mid sixties (although I am sure some songs from the latter part of that decade slipped in). He was a member of three legendary sixties bands in The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. He wrote Gimme’ Some Lovin’ at the age of fifteen. He also had a massively successful solo career. Tune him in tonight to see why he’s a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

In 1971, she released her self-titled album which won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and spawned her first Top 10 single, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be. During the seventies, she had a string of 13 Top 40 U.S. hits and four Gold-certified singles. Tonight she becomes our featured singer-songwriter.

Today we play musical homage to those who left us far too soon.

But we also think all the signs of their explosion of creativity started just a tad earlier with Rubber Soul, one of the finest albums ever recorded by anyone. This playlist covers those albums plus Hey Jude, Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.

There’s nothing like seeing TPATH live (which I had the good fortune to do four times). TPATH is one of our official House Bands (along with The Beatles). Tonight we’ve got them live from the Vic Theatre in Chicago.

He refuses to be defined by musical styles. Tonight we have him live from The Record Plant, and we’re about to bolster his presence in our standard rotation!
