It’s a great day in The Mermaid Lounge because we bring you the music that inspired us to start this station to begin with. We focus on the 60’s and deliver a brand new Album of The Week as well.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons NEW!

Gram Parsons never lived long enough to see just how influential he truly was. He died at the age of 26 from multiple drug use in a Joshua Tree, California, on this very day (September 19) in 1973. It’s only fitting we pay him tribute with our Album of The Week.

Parsons was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist who played with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist. He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and, in spite of the rumors, they were not lovers. Their connection was music. She, of course, went on to become a country-rock legend.

Gram Parsons brought country to rock n’ roll and helped forge the country-rock genre in the same way that Bob Dylan brought folk to rock. He was that influential in a very short lifetime.

We’re back with the music that helped to bring us to live here in The Mermaid Lounge. This volume focuses more on the mid-to-late sixties. You will hear The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (with and without her various bands), The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doors, The Zombies, and many more. It’s over five hours of sixties music!

We’re waiting for you here in The Mermaid Lounge where we are all about the music. We are free to all, accept absolutely no advertising, and employ only one DJ. It’s Midweek Music Festival Time With Music From Woodstock and Monterey Pop on Wednesday, September 15, 2021

It’s hard to tell what inspires me to do what I do, but I can tell you that I’ve been listening to music since I was a little kid. Before the Beatles gave me my own music, I was listening to my sisters’ music — Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, and others. I remember watching my oldest sister dance on American Bandstand on our old black and white television. That was pretty cool back then.

On Monday, something prompted me to make this day music festival day in honor of Woodstock 1969 and its predecessor, The Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967. But there was another festival that nobody seems to have recorded or documented. It was held at Watkins Glen in New York in 1973 and featured three giants: The Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Grateful Dead. It was called The Summer Jam. In fact. the audience at Summer Jam was bigger than Woodstock, with 600,000 people in attendance. The closest we’ve come to finding a decent recording is a soundboard of The Grateful Dead’s performance, which we will feature on this coming Saturday night’s LIVE DEAD feature. At the end of the performance, both The Band and The Allman Brothers Band come up on stage with them.

Woodstock 1969 made music history, and the bands who played there are part of our station’s DNA.

Today we have four hours of music celebrating the legendary Woodstock festival. In spite of the fact that “Woodstock” has been recreated a few times, there was only one real Woodstock and it happened in 1969. You’ll hear Crosby, Stills & Nash (their first live performance ever), Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Canned Heat, Arlo Guthrie, The Band, Joan Baez, Tim Hardin, John Sebastian, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Country Joe & The Fish, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Who and more!

7:00 p.m. Music From The Monterey International Pop Festival, June 16-18, 1967

Truth be told, this is the festival that sparked it all and made Woodstock possible. Large, outdoor festivals had never happened before Monterey. What few people also realize is this is where a guy named Otis Redding was introduced to the music world. You’ll hear The Big O, along with The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Bob Dylan, Scott McKenzie, The Animals (who made a great song called Monterey about this event), Simon & Garfunkel, The Association, The Electric Flag, Booker T & The MGs, and more. Many of these performers would also be at Woodstock 1969.

As we always say, this is a great day to tune us in. But then again, every day is a great day to tune us in because we don’t play music like other radio stations. We are different not only in content, but also in style. See for yourselves.

Good Morning, Long Weekenders! We move into fall in style today with an appropriately-titled Album of The Week, and our infamous Original Sixties Rotation this afternoon and into the evening.

We’ve got the music that inspired the radio station today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together. Since we started, it has developed into an extended play event, covering more than five hours of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Lulu, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Petula Clark, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and more.

Laurel Canyon and the cross pollination it inspired among musical friends was magical, but it didn’t end with the 60’s. There was a second wave of people who moved in and took part in that magic, including Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Carole King, James Taylor and others. They join The Doors, Canned Heat, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas & The Papas and others from the first wave.

We’ve updated this playlist to over four hours of great music, officially making it our newest extended player. Oh yeah, we’ve also changed the name.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul Simon

We haven’t heard from this guy for a while, so it’s about time. This playlist features his music from his partnership with Art Garfunkel to his solo work.

It’s another crazy hot and ugly weather day here in the Boston area. It has been this way most of the summer. We’re hoping it comes to an end outside, but we hope to keep it hot in The Mermaid Lounge (music-wise, that is) as we move into fall with some new stuff. Great rockers never really die, and neither do great singer-songwriters. And Jackson Browne is one of the elites in my book. In every article I read, the album is being described as a boomer faces his own mortality, and it may well be that because Jackson Browne has always been introspective. Do I think it’s his best? No. Do I think it’s a great album? I do. Especially since I sometimes too find myself confronting my own mortality.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is due for an update, but it’s pretty damned serviceable as it is. We have two sixties rotations because we have so much sixties music. This is more geared toward the earlier part of the sixties. Since this is the first of the two we put together, we can it The Original Sixties Rotation. It is indeed the music that inspired me to start this station and share my record collection with you. More than five hours of sixties music uninterrupted begins at mid-day.

The Fillmore Extravaganza Continues With Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Janis Joplin, and Hot Tuna, Friday, July 2, 2021

Good Morning, Fillmorians! We continue our celebration of Bill Graham’s magical musical vision today on our way to July 4th. We’ve got quite the line-up for you all today!

Here’s today’s fantastic line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, January 10-February 7, 1997 NEW!

By all standards, the Heartbreakers’ 20-show residency at The Fillmore West in 1997 is the stuff musical legends are made of. You can read about it here in an article written after Petty’s untimely death in 2017. This is the first time we’ve aired the amazing three hours of music that came from that residency. It covers not only the Heartbreakers’ own hits, but also some great covers from the artists who inspired them.

We hear that the Petty estate and his bandmates are working on their own multi-album effort somewhere down the road that will include the special guests who came up on stage to sing with them. We loo forward to that as well.

4:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at The Fillmore, New York, February 12, 1969

Janis was no stranger to The Fillmore East and West. This particular performance was during Janis’ transitional period. She had left Big Brother & The Holding Company and moved on with the Komic Blues Band. The only hold-over from Big Brother was guitarist Sam Andrew. The goal of the band was to play more R & B and soul music than the hard rock she was known for. Admittedly, the band’s performance got mixed reviews, but there was absolutely no denying Janis Joplin’s on-stage charisma and performance.

9:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, March 4, 1988

Hot Tuna rose out of the ashes of Jefferson Airplane, a collaboration between Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, that played mostly blues-rock and Americana music. Although members have come and gone over the years, including Grace Slick herself, the band largely remained their baby.

We hope you’ll join us as much as you can today to celebrate the Fillmore. In between all this great stuff, we’ll have our usual open stream. We’re free 24/7 and remain committed to music as opposed to profit.
