Good morning, musicologists and welcome to Friday. We’re on the cusp of the weekend, and we’ve got some great music here today, including a new ‘Spotlight’ from a reggae legend!
Here’s your week’s end musical lineup:
9:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists
This is one of our favorite EP’s with music from the folk legends as well as the artists who keep the genre alive, including John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Bob Dylan, Harry Chapin, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family and more!
4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Marcia Griffiths NEW!
Today we introduce a brand new ‘Spotlight’ featuring a six-decade legend in Reggae music. Marcia Griffiths has been on the scene not only as a solo artist for decades, but also as a fierce collaborator with other reggae artists. She was a member of the I-Threes (who also have a ‘Spotlight’ here) along with Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt. Together, they were Bob Marley’s back-up singers and one of the most influential Reggae acts in the genre. Today she’s in our ‘Spotlight.’
8:00 p.m. Laura Nyro Live at Stern Auditorium, Carnegie Hall, New York, NY, March 31, 1976
Speaking of music legends, here’s another. Her compositions put many, many artists on the map and on the charts, but there is nothing like hearing her sing them herself. Tonight you can!
Once again, allow me to remind you all. We’re on 24/7 and we’re completely free. No strings. No surprises. No credit card required, nor is there a required subscription. We’re anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, and all about the music. The button is below!
Good morning, musicologists! Festival Week is here and we’re opening up with the sounds of the Monterey International Pop Festival from 1967, the Summer of Love no matter how many people tell you it was 1969. It was not. It was ’67, and there are no alternative facts on that.
Here’s your Monday musical lineup:
9:00 a.m. The Monterey International Pop Festival, Monterey County Fairgrounds, Monterey, CA, June 16-18, 1967
The sounds of the Summer of Love abound here. This was the precursor to the big festival to beat all, Woodstock. The diversity of music and artists that flooded Monterey was astounding as you will see. We’ve got five hours of uninterrupted Monterey Pop music. This repeats beginning at 11:00 p.m. tonight!
4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding
Otis Redding was introduced to the world at Monterey Pop. He hadn’t even released his first song yet. Sadly, he would never get to enjoy the legendary place in music history that he would eventually achieve. His chartered plane, which also carried his back-up band, The Bar-Kays, crashed into Lake Monona while on his way to another performance in December of that year killing all on board. All of Redding’s hits were posthumous, but his gritty voice and his songwriting made him one of the legends of soul and R & B.
8:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at The Fillmore East, New York, NY, February 12, 1969
Janis Joplin established herself solidified her position as one of the stars of the sixties at Monterey in 1967. Tonight we close out the programming with a great Fillmore performance. Sadly, Janis too would be gone by 1970, a member of musical folklore’s 27 Club.
We’re just getting started. All week long we’ll be featuring the sounds of some of the greatest music festivals and the artists who made them great. Don’t miss a minute. We’ll also be replaying the festival music in the late night hours for our international friends. The button is below!
We’ve got an Open Stream day today, giving you hours of our extensively eclectic musical collection with absolutely no commercial interruption. The Music Mermaid is fully in charge and who knows what she’ll do. She could actually even chose a playlist, or a trifecta, or she could just choose to let our file of 30,000 songs run free and wild. You won’t know unless you tune us in!
Good morning, musicologists! Technically speaking, Mardi Gras season started on January 6 (twelfth night) and the party goes all the way to March 4, which is Mardi Gras Day! So, today we start the musical celebration with an EP we haven’t aired for a while!
Here’s your musical lineup!
10:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists
We’ve got a great playlist here that features not only authentic New Orleans musical genres (a little jazz, cajun/zydeco, etc) but also features artists born and sometimes raised there, including BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, Tony Joe White, Lucinda Williams, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New Orleans), The Boogaloo Swamis, The Neville Brothers, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Queen Ida & The Bon Temps Zydeco Band, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Daywalkers and more!
4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Allen Toussaint
Toussaint was a musician, songwriter, arranger and producer who was one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R & B from the 1950’s to the end of the century. Today, he’s in our spotlight.
8:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters Live at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Fairgrounds Race Course, New Orleans, LA, July 27, 2021
This is a real treat: An all-woman band from southwest Louisiana that plays many styles of Cajun French music. It’s essentially five women, unrelated by birth, who simply share the love of Cajun music. The band was founded by Ann Savoy (who also made an album with Linda Ronstadt; they called themselves The ZoZo Sisters) and Jane Vidrine back in 1995.
Today is a wondrous day here in The Mermaid Lounge and we do hope you’ll join us for this great New Orleans experience! Remember, before, in between and after we give you our big, wide Open Stream. The button is below!
