It’s Sunday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With Our Extended ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ Playlist and a Grrrrreat New Album of The Week, August 8, 2021

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson NEW!

I’m really excited to offer this album up this week. I could write a review of this, but I actually found one that’s perfect from the Louisiana Music Factory site, so here it is:

“Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they’re stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy “Mother Earth” Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” struts her stuff on the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic “Yield Not to Temptation,” while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like “In Tears” from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. But it’s the combined voices that makes the session so special, and the title track, a soulfully scintillating second-line anthem, is the most enjoyable example of the vocal virtuosity of these women. It’s a quintessential New Orleans celebration of singing, well worth the purchase price by itself, and it, like the entire album, also serves as an excellent sampler of the multiple talents of the superb song stylists involved.”

It has been a while since we aired this, but it’s sooooo good. This collection includes outtakes that were never released, alternate versions of those that were and, of course, the actual final songs that appeared on Trio I and Trio II. We hear the term “supergroup” an awful lot, but like a lot of things in music, it is never a term applied to women.

We are applying it here in The Mermaid Lounge and have always called this brilliant musical alliance of friends a supergroup. That is what they were.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

This is it! This is the final airing of Browne’s brand new album, so don’t miss it. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.

What can we say about this woman? She’s released so many albums and singles over her brilliant career it would take three paragraphs to enumerate them. She has won 14 Grammys and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame. In my opinion, if they put rappers in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (a practice which I think is absurd, frankly), Emmylou Harris belongs there. I recently read the projection is for 2027. What the fuck else does she need to do?

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne

7:00 p.m. The Tedeschi Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012

This great blues-rock band is led by married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, and was formed in 2010 in Jacksonville, Florida. Revelator, their first album as a band, won the 2012 Grammy for Best Blues Album. Need we say anything more?

Indeed, the rumors are true: The original Fleetwood Mac wasn’t a pop-rock band. That happened with the departure of Peter Green and the addition of Buckingham/Nicks. The original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, led by Peter Green. We have the original band live from The Warehouse in New Orleans, recorded over a two-day period.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne

The second airing of this week’s Album of The Week, which just happens to be a brand new album by singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. He has remained true to himself over five decades in the music business. His message remains the same, and he delivers it with the same passion as he always has, but this time with the perspective that time is running out. That’s why we love him here.

7:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & B.B. King: Riding With The King

Two blues masters here, and the results are totally pleasing to the ears. This is actually what we should call ‘Not Our Album of The Week’ as it was their first collaboration, released in 2000. It won the Grammy for the Best Traditional Blues Album, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums, and was certified multi-platinum in the U.S.

Great rockers never really die, and neither do great singer-songwriters. And Jackson Browne is one of the elites in my book. In every article I read, the album is being described as a boomer faces his own mortality, and it may well be that because Jackson Browne has always been introspective. Do I think it’s his best? No. Do I think it’s a great album? I do. Especially since I sometimes too find myself confronting my own mortality.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is due for an update, but it’s pretty damned serviceable as it is. We have two sixties rotations because we have so much sixties music. This is more geared toward the earlier part of the sixties. Since this is the first of the two we put together, we can it The Original Sixties Rotation. It is indeed the music that inspired me to start this station and share my record collection with you. More than five hours of sixties music uninterrupted begins at mid-day.

While Eric Clapton and Van Morrison whined over being locked down (and continue to whine; a characteristic I dislike in people), Chrissie Hynde made it count. This is a fantastic album of lesser-known Bob Dylan covers. Right now it’s our official Album of the Year.
