We’re Winding Down on The Fillmore Fiesta, But We’re Not Done Yet! And The Heartbreakers’ New “Angel Dream” Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, July 4, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Running a tad late today because I slept in just a bit. This old body gets tired after a week in retail hell. But never you mind. We’ve got a great grand finale for all Fillmorians today, and a brand new Tom Petty effort for our Album of The Week.

We wrap up our Fillmore Festival today with some great stuff!

Here’s your July 4th line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Angel Dream by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

This is the new release from the Petty estate, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their soundtrack album, She’s The One. It’s a reimagined vision of great music, which also happens to include four previously-unreleased tunes. There’s always a bonus because The Heartbreakers have so much unreleased music yet to go. One is a long version of Supernatural Radio, one of my favorite tunes and the other is an unbelievable studio version of J.J. Cale’s Thirteen Days, another of my favorites which the Heartbreakers have done live in the past. Two others are brand new songs.

There is no doubting Petty’s musical genius at this point. But what is evident and what must always be said is how dedicated his bandmates were to his musical cause, and just how fucking brilliant they all were together.

3:00 p.m. Laura Nyro Live at The Fillmore East, New York, March 30, 1971 NEW!

Laura Nyro called this performance Spread Your Wings and Fly, but we here in The Mermaid Lounge believe she did that for her entire career. This is one of my favorite performances ever. The Fillmore East closed its doors a few days earlier than West, on June 27, 1971. Laura Nyro’s performance was one of the finals, just a few months before the end.

7:00 p.m. Fillmore, The Last Days: Various Artists NEW!

Here we have a multi-artist effort of live performances at the Fillmore West just before the doors closed. Most of the bands are from the Bay area, and include Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, the Elvin Bishop Group, Boz Scaggs, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Cold Blood, Taj Mahal, and The Grateful Dead (life would not be complete without them), and many more!

And with that, our Fillmore Festival is done for now. We have a lot more Fillmore performances in our vault, so we’ll be doing this again for sure. Just not sure when, but you’ll be the first to know. It’s the fourth of July, folks. I’m not a flag waver, and I hate the word “patriot” because I really believe the right-wing uses that term way too much. They are actually “hatriots.” So, I’m listening to music. That’s the best way to celebrate.

Fillmore Forward With The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and LIVE DEAD Later, Saturday, July 3, 2021

Onward Fillmorians! We move forward with three great bands today from both Fillmore venues. Our only exception to the Fillmore rule will be the final airing of Kate Taylor’s Album of The Week.

It was tough accessing some of the actual posters for these dates, but we did our best to choose alternatives wisely!

We have all of these legendary recordings in our vast collection. These are the best culled over the 1971 Allman Brothers appearances.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sister Kate by Kate Taylor FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Kate Taylor’s great album from 1971. We eagerly await her brand new August 2021 release. Tomorrow, however, when you roll out of bed we have a masterful selection for you.

6:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore West, July 4 1971

CCR delivers their special brand of swamp music in what is the final day of The Fillmore West’s existence under Bill Graham. It’s hard to believe these guys were born and raised in Berkeley, California. Their ‘born on the bayou’ sound was truly amazing. One of the best bands to ever exist.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, July 2, 1971

We resurrect this great show for our Fillmore extravaganza. What would this celebration be without the ultimate jam band’s inclusion?

This is a great warm-up for tomorrow’s grand finale! We hope you’ll tune our special July 4 celebration. Forget all the flag-waving and fireworks bullshit. This is where the party’s at.

We Celebrate The Fillmore Through The Weekend, Starting Today With Lucinda Williams and The Byrds, Thursday, July 1, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we begin a Fillmore celebration that runs through July 4. Bill Graham closed the Fillmore East on June 27, 1971 and The Fillmore West on July 4, 1971. It was a legendary venue for so many great bands that it cannot be ignored.

“I’d rather play a few nights at The Fillmore than one night in an arena.” We kick off this celebration with Lucinda Williams live at the Fillmore West.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sister Kate by Kate Taylor

We take a short break in the Fillmore celebration to air our Album of The Week. We’re winding down on this selection, folks. Our final airing will be Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The Byrds Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, Recorded Live February 7-8, 1969 NEW!

The notorious Byrd brothers remain one of our Mermaid Lounge favorites, and we have a never-before-heard concert by The Byrds live at the Fillmore West today.

This is the way we here in The Mermaid Lounge celebrate July 4. Screw the flag-waving and the Star Spangled Banner. Tune us in and celebrate along with us. This is just the beginning of a great music weekend.

The second airing of Sister Kate is upon us. We understand if you lost sight of Kate Taylor in the early 70s, with both James and Livingston making records. But Sister Kate is a fine album, and Kate Taylor is a great talent in her own right.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at A & R Studios, New York, August 26, 1971

No matter what anyone tells you, The Allman Brothers Band are the granddaddys of Southern rock, and certainly the finest purveyors of blues-rock on the planet. Today we have them live at A & R Studios.

I don’t know what the weather is where you are, but outside The Mermaid Lounge it’s far too hot to venture out. Some of us have no choice, but if you do, then this is the place to be. Tune us in.

It’s Sunday Funday and Kate Taylor Owns Our Album of The Week while Our Long-Player ‘Folk From A to Z’ Takes Up The Afternoon and Evening, June 27, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another Sunday Funday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and I’m pleased to announce that we’ve got a great new album of the week finally getting its due.

Kate Taylor, sister to James and Livingston, owns our Album of The Week, Sister Kate.

The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of this great album. I know. It was easy to lose sight of Kate Taylor in all that Taylor family stuff in the seventies, but Kate Taylor is back. She’s back not only with our Album of The Week, but with a brand new album scheduled for release on August 6th called, Why Wait.

I owned the vinyl of all of Kate Taylor’s albums and later, the cassettes. If you click on the link above (Album of The Week), you’ll see that Kate had a lot of friends who respected her work…Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Bernie Leadon of The Eagles, Danny Korchmar, Sweet Baby James (of course), John Hartford, J.D. Souther, Merry Clayton, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Peter Asher. Asher (formerly of Peter & Gordon) was the genius behind Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, neighbor to Paul McCartney and FOB (friend of The Beatles). He’s back with her on her brand new release as well.

I promise you that Why Wait will have it’s day in the spotlight here, Kate Taylor’s music has already been added to our standard rotation, and soon we’ll put her In The Spotlight. But, well, why wait when we can kick this off with Sister Kate! We hope you enjoy.

It’s that time again…time for our foray into folk music. What would Tuesday Bluesday be without Stevie Ray Vaughan? This playlist covers his career as a solo artist as well as his time with Double Trouble, and also includes both studio and live selections.

It’s Sunday Funday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With ‘Ladies Day Out’ and “Blues From Laurel Canyon” As Our Album of The Week, June 20, 2021

Good Morning, and Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. It’s time once again for our ‘Ladies Day Out’ extended playlist, and we’ve got a great new Album of The Week starting today.

Ladies Day Out begins at 3:00 p.m. and runs for five uninterrupted hours.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blues From Laurel Canyon by John Mayall NEW!

Released in November 1968 after John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers disbanded, this album is yet another piece of Laurel Canyon music history. John Mayall wrote all the songs and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. He is joined by a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac (a blues band at its birth) plays guitar on one of the songs as well. There’s nothing like some British blues to kick-start your day.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of popular music still get the short end of the stick on the airwaves. Some of these radio stations think that Joan Jett and Blondie are the only women who ever made rock n’ roll. Pioneers like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, and others get absolutely no appreciable playtime that I can find anywhere, not even on the so-called “classic rock” channels.

We aim to change that here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We do not broadcast like traditional radio because we can’t afford to compete with those entities. We are an Internet radio station. But we have made a commitment to showcasing the women of rock n’ roll, soul, folk, blues, even cajun-zydeco (sorry, no rap here) in the hope that in some small way we can pay them respect. Our homage to the women who make music begins at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Tune us in. It’s hot as the blazes out there where I am today. But it’s nice and cool here in The Mermaid Lounge. The only thing hot in here is the music. And it runs 24/7 free of charge to everyone.

Yet another never-before-heard-here performance by the master of all jam bands, The Dead. This one is from one of my favorite cities, New Orleans.

We’re Hearing Those ‘Echoes From the Canyon’ Updated Playlist, and A Second Airing of Our Album of The Week, Thursday, June 17, 2021

Good Morning, Music Historians everywhere! Today we have an airing of our newly-expanded Echoes From The Canyon playlist (and it will go through another update soon) for your listening pleasure.

Laurel Canyon was the scene for the musical revolution of the 60’s and 70’s.

There’s no question that Laurel Canyon was the epicenter of the musical revolution of the 60’s and 70’s. Jakob Dylan and Tom Petty knew it. The both drew musical inspiration from those bands.

All of these great musicians lived within walking distance of each other. Mama Cass invited people over to jam and have lunch (she also never cleaned her house), Jackson Browne lived in a basement under Don Henley, Graham Nash wrote Our House in a tiny house in Laurel, everyone loved partying with The Monkees, and John Mayall’s first album after the Bluesbreakers broke up was Blues From Laurel Canyon.
