It’s a Busy Saturday Courtesy of Van Morrison & Joni Mitchell, Our Final Airing of our AOW, and Live Dead! on September 12, 2020

Happy Saturday, Ungovernables! Saturdays are usually busier than weekdays, and this is no exception. We have some great programming on tap wrapped around the 24/7 airing of the best music on the planet.

The multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist genius known as Van Morrison.

Here’s your line-up for Saturday:

11:00 a.m. Joni Mitchell Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, July 30, 1983

Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has combined folk, jazz, pop and rock over the years to deliver an amazing library of music. She just announced the birth of the Joni Mitchell Archives, a series of boxed sets that include her earliest-recorded work will be released over the next several years. I can tell you this is much anticipated here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic

This will be the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow morning, there’ll be a brand new one on the blog.

6:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, October 6, 1979

Again, another singer-songwriter who defies the conventional, and he has also built an incredible body of work that began in the sixties with the British blues band, Them. The concert delivered on this date is classic Van Morrison.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The McNicols Sports Arena, Denver, CO, December 14, 1990 NEW!

This Saturday’s Live Dead! is another strong outing by the world’s ultimate jam band. No two shows were ever the same, even on the same tour. Enjoy.

What you waiting for? I keep saying it: Free. 24/7. No commercials. No politicians. No chatter. Just music and a few station IDs. End of story.

Duane Allman & Eric Clapton Rock the Studio, Love is For Losers, and Our Album of The Week, Thursday, September 10, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have Duane Allman and Eric Clapton jamming at Criterion Studios, a playlist for those losers in love out there (myself included, by the way), and our Album of the Week.

Two Guitar Gods join forces in the studio!

Here’s today’s programming line-up:

11:00 a.m. Duane Allman & Eric Clapton Studio Jams 1 Thru 6

One day Duane Allman was working at Criterion Studios when Eric Clapton and his band, Derek & The Dominos, dropped by to record. They were introduced and the rest is history. The result became known as The Layla Sessions.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic

You can learn the history of this great album, or any of our AOW selections, by simply clicking on the album cover image in the right sidebar!

7:00 p.m. Nothing But Heartbreak: Various Artists

“I been through diamonds! I been through minks! I been through it all! Love Stinks!” J. Geils’ lament is just one of the songs for the lovelorn you’ll hear on today’s featured playlist!

So, again, I’m wondering what the people in the U.S. are waiting for. Europe, Asia and other far-flung locations are all over this radio station. As usual, the toddlers are running behind. We’re free. We require no information. All you need to do is pull up a tab. Seriously.

Linda Ronstadt Live at My Father’s Place, Traffic Scores our Album of The Week, and We Celebrate Roger Waters’ Birthday on Sunday, September 6, 2020

Good Morning, Audiophiles! How are we this fine Sunday morning? We are doing very well here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we have some great stuff coming your way. Today we also celebrate Roger Waters’ 77th birthday.

MyFathersPlace-LongIsland-1200x630

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Linda Ronstadt Live at My Father’s Place, Roslyn, New York, July 21, 1974   NEW!

Like so many other small venues of its time, My Father’s Place was the incubator for future stars. In Boston (actually, Cambridge), we had Jonathan Swift’s, Jack’s, The Inn Square Men’s Bar, and Passim’s Coffee House.

Linda Ronstadt was one of those future stars who passed through My Father’s Place on her way to the top. We have her July 21 ,1974 performance today. That was also her Heart Like A Wheel breakout year.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic   NEW!

Here’s the thing about British bands and America. The releases are always different between Europe and the U.S., and I’m always so annoyed by that. Why? Because the European ones are always so much stronger. But never mind that shit. Traffic was an excellent band, although a bit psychotic about how to handle Dave Mason. It was some kind of love-hate relationship. Still, he and the magnificent Steve Winwood played their styles off each other very well, and Jim Capaldi? Well, Traffic would never have been Traffic without him. This is a great album, no matter where the  hell it came from.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd   NEW!

Today is Roger Waters’ 77th birthday, and it’s time for Pink Floyd to step into The Spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge, where music nirvana is made daily.

Look, people, again I say Europe and Asia is all over this station. I have no idea what the problem here is in America. Perhaps you prefer to pay for your music. I can’t explain the lethargy. Whatever. Whenever you wake the fuck up, we’ll be here.

The Final Airing of REVOLVER, Traffic Live at Woodstock ’94, Queen in The Spotlight, and Tonight’s Live Dead on Saturday, September 5, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! As usual, it’s a pretty busy Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today, we wish Freddie Mercury a happy birthday with a special Spotlight edition.

Traffic-Woodstock 94

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.    Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles   FINAL AIRING!

Today, we bid Revolver a fond farewell. Tomorrow, there’ll be a brand new Album of the Week on the blog.

3:00 p.m.      Traffic Live at Woodstock ’94

Woodstock ’94 sure wasn’t the original, but anywhere Bob Dylan and Traffic show up to play can’t be all bad.

7:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Music of Queen   NEW!

Today, we’ wish Freddie Mercury a Happy Birthday. If he were alive today, he’d be 72 years old, the oldest member of the classic Queen line-up. Although he passed in 1991, Queen’s music lives on.

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, November 7, 1969   NEW!

Another new airing of Live Dead, this one from 1969 at The Fillmore West. I have no idea how many times the band played at The Fillmore, but I promise you no two shows were ever the same. As usual.

I know. Here I go again, like a broken record. It’s time, people, to tune in a station that doesn’t charge you for music. That would be #BecomeUngovernable Radio. Just hit the link below.

The Band Live in Asbury Park, The All-Girl Revue Too, and REVOLVER Highlight Thursday, September 3, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a great line-up today from The Mermaid Lounge, and we’re firing on all cylinders right from the start!

the Band

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   The Band: Live at The Casino Arena, Asbury Park, New Jersey, July 20, 1976

The started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band, and the rest is history. The Band left us an amazing volume of just plain great fucking music, from their hits to their deep cuts. That’s why we love them here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles

No matter who you talk to about Beatle albums, the consensus is that this was a vast turning point for the band from all perspectives.

7:00 p.m.     The All-Girl Revue Too: Various Artists   UPDATED!

We’re back with an updated version of The All-Girl Revue Too. Hear Norah Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith, Laura Nyro, Chi Coltrane, Etta James and more!

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Bonnie Raitt & Friends, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Albert King; and REVOLVER Returns as Our AOW on, September 1, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a brand new season as we roll into September! Even better, we kick it off with Tuesday Bluesday!

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Albert King

Here is your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George, John Hammond & Freebo, Live at Ultrasonic Studios, October 17, 1972   NEW!

Some of the best stuff we have is archival discoveries and, while they may not exactly be technically perfect, it doesn’t matter. A young Bonnie Raitt is hanging out with some friends here an they are conducting a textbook super session. Her youthful versions of Jackson Browne’s Under the Falling Sky and Chris Smither’s Love Me Like a Man are really great,  but her version of Blind Faith’s Can’t Find My Way Home is the most amazing.

When you toss in Lowell George, the grand master of Little Feat, John Hammond and Freebo, you’ve got a super group. Who is Freebo? His real name is Daniel Friedberg, and he’s legend in my generation, a super studio musician who has spent a lot of time supporting Bonnie Raitt. Freebo has also played with Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, John Mayall and many other musicians.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles

The Revolver album signaled what was to come from the Beatles. It was a giant LEAP forward for the band in so many areas. This album is widely considered the most influential album in modern music. Find out why by tuning in.

7:00 p.m.     Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session,  Recorded Live at CHCH-TV on December 6, 1983

Two blues masters were recorded live at CHCH-TV studios in Hamilton, Ontario, when SRV was 29 years old and King was 60. You can read more about this legendary blues session right here.

Come on, people, it’s a great time to tune us in. We’re here. We’re free. We ask for nada, and we operate totally outside the system. Oh, yeah, we also play great music — rotating more than 25,000 songs — on a 24-hour basis. Non-stop musical nirvana.

lindaronstadt

11:00 a.m.   The Best of The Summer of Love! The Doors by The  Doors

The Doors had two releases in 1967. This was their debut album, recorded in 1966 and released in January of 1967. It is considered a seminal event in the development of psychedelic and acid rock. An amazing album.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds  FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow, there’ll be a new one in its place!

7:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live at The Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey, December 6, 1975

Heart Like a Wheel was released in 1974, and Prisoner in Disguise in 1975. It was lift-off time on the launch pad of Linda Ronstadt’s career.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, December 4, 1966   NEW!

Tonight we take it back to 1966 and the infamous Matrix Club on Fillmore Street, San Francisco, a key location to what is called ‘the San Francisco sound.’ Enjoy.

We are the station with the mostest. No fucking lie. Non-stop music, free of charge with no commercials and no talking heads. Best of all, no politicians.

We’re On Our Final Week Of The Summer of Love, So We Focus on The Sixties Today, Sunday, August 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re on our final week of The Summer of Love, so we’re focusing on the Sixties today.

rockin-the-1960s

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

1:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday, The Byrds   NEW!

This was The Byrds’ fourth studio album, released in February of 1967. With this album, they continued their foray into psychedelic music…with a touch of jazz thrown in for good measure. Chris Hillman began to take the spotlight, revealing himself to be a formidable singer-songwriter.

4:00 p.m.   The Beatles: The Transformative Years

The Beatles also moved into the world of psychedelic music in the latter half of the sixties. The album Revolver was really the album that catapulted the band forward in this direction. This is a great playlist.

8:00 p.m.   Janis Joplin Live at Winterland 1968

To close out the evening’s festivities, we hear from one of the most important, influential female rockers of the sixties live on stage at Winterland, Janis Joplin.

This is, like all the other days, a great day to tune us in. We’re no bullshit all day, every day. No hidden charges. No credit card required. No personal information requested. No advertising and no fucking politicians.

Simon & Garfunkel in The Spotlight, “Magical Mystery Tour” is Our Summer of Love Feature, The Final Airing of “Are You Experienced?” & Saturday Night’s Live Dead, August 15, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have a very busy Saturday in between all that great streaming. Sit yourselves down and enjoy.

simon&garfunkel

Here’s today’s line-up:

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Simon & Garfunkel   NEW!

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met in grammar school back in 1953, learned how to harmonize together, and began writing music. In 1957, they had their first modest success with Hey Schoolgirl, a song that emulated their idols, The Everly Brothers. The rest is — as they say — history, people.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience  FINAL AIRING!

Today we will bid a fond farewell to Jimi Hendrix’s brilliant debut album. Tomorrow we’ll have another Summer of Love Album of the Week for you.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles   NEW!

Like The Doors, the Beatles had two album releases in 1967. Magical Mystery Tour had the unfortunate task of following up Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an impossible task. We feature it today because it’s still a great collection of transformative Beatle songs.

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, December 31, 1977   NEW!

What could be better than spending New Year’s Eve with The Grateful Dead in San Francisco? Not much, people.

This is your day to tune us in. Don’t waste any more time. We’re free. We’re outside the system. And we intend to stay that way.

Here’s your Summer of Love line-up!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience   NEW!

The U.S. release of this groundbreaking Hendrix album came on August 23, 1967, right in the thick of the Summer of Love, and it met with both critical and commercial success from the start. To this date, it is considered one of the most powerful debuts in rock music history, and signaled a new direction in psychedelic music.

3:00 p.m.     Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

Another amazing musical experience that began in the sixties and continued on: The Laurel Canyon experience with The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and The Buffalo Springfield, for starters. You will hear them and many others if you tune in at 3:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.     The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions

Although this was released by the Beach Boys in 2011, it chronicles the original plans for the Smile album, the Beach Boys planned successor to the Pet Sounds album. Though the original album was abandoned and remains unfinished, the first 19 tracks of The Smile Sessions approximate what it might have sounded like.

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. With us.
