Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has combined folk, jazz, pop and rock over the years to deliver an amazing library of music. She just announced the birth of the Joni Mitchell Archives, a series of boxed sets that include her earliest-recorded work will be released over the next several years. I can tell you this is much anticipated here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic

This will be the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow morning, there’ll be a brand new one on the blog.

6:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, October 6, 1979

Again, another singer-songwriter who defies the conventional, and he has also built an incredible body of work that began in the sixties with the British blues band, Them. The concert delivered on this date is classic Van Morrison.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The McNicols Sports Arena, Denver, CO, December 14, 1990 NEW!

This Saturday’s Live Dead! is another strong outing by the world’s ultimate jam band. No two shows were ever the same, even on the same tour. Enjoy.

11:00 a.m.   Linda Ronstadt Live at My Father’s Place, Roslyn, New York, July 21, 1974   NEW!

Like so many other small venues of its time, My Father’s Place was the incubator for future stars. In Boston (actually, Cambridge), we had Jonathan Swift’s, Jack’s, The Inn Square Men’s Bar, and Passim’s Coffee House. 

Linda Ronstadt was one of those future stars who passed through My Father’s Place on her way to the top. We have her July 21 ,1974 performance today. That was also her Heart Like A Wheel breakout year.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic   NEW!

Here’s the thing about British bands and America. The releases are always different between Europe and the U.S., and I’m always so annoyed by that. Why? Because the European ones are always so much stronger. But never mind that shit. Traffic was an excellent band, although a bit psychotic about how to handle Dave Mason. It was some kind of love-hate relationship. Still, he and the magnificent Steve Winwood played their styles off each other very well, and Jim Capaldi? Well, Traffic would never have been Traffic without him. This is a great album, no matter where the  hell it came from.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd   NEW!

Today is Roger Waters’ 77th birthday, and it’s time for Pink Floyd to step into The Spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge, where music nirvana is made daily. 

Look, people, again I say Europe and Asia is all over this station. I have no idea what the problem here is in America. Perhaps you prefer to pay for your music. I can’t explain the lethargy. Whatever. Whenever you wake the fuck up, we’ll be here.

Another new airing of Live Dead, this one from 1969 at The Fillmore West. I have no idea how many times the band played at The Fillmore, but I promise you no two shows were ever the same. As usual.

No matter who you talk to about Beatle albums, the consensus is that this was a vast turning point for the band from all perspectives.

Some of the best stuff we have is archival discoveries and, while they may not exactly be technically perfect, it doesn’t matter. A young Bonnie Raitt is hanging out with some friends here an they are conducting a textbook super session. Her youthful versions of Jackson Browne’s Under the Falling Sky and Chris Smither’s Love Me Like a Man are really great,  but her version of Blind Faith’s Can’t Find My Way Home is the most amazing. 

When you toss in Lowell George, the grand master of Little Feat, John Hammond and Freebo, you’ve got a super group. Who is Freebo? His real name is Daniel Friedberg, and he’s legend in my generation, a super studio musician who has spent a lot of time supporting Bonnie Raitt. Freebo has also played with Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, John Mayall and many other musicians. 

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles

The Revolver album signaled what was to come from the Beatles. It was a giant LEAP forward for the band in so many areas. This album is widely considered the most influential album in modern music. Find out why by tuning in.

7:00 p.m.     Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session,  Recorded Live at CHCH-TV on December 6, 1983

Two blues masters were recorded live at CHCH-TV studios in Hamilton, Ontario, when SRV was 29 years old and King was 60. You can read more about this legendary blues session right here.

The Doors had two releases in 1967. This was their debut album, recorded in 1966 and released in January of 1967. It is considered a seminal event in the development of psychedelic and acid rock. An amazing album.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds  FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow, there’ll be a new one in its place!

Heart Like a Wheel was released in 1974, and Prisoner in Disguise in 1975. It was lift-off time on the launch pad of Linda Ronstadt’s career.

Tonight we take it back to 1966 and the infamous Matrix Club on Fillmore Street, San Francisco, a key location to what is called ‘the San Francisco sound.’ Enjoy.

1:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday, The Byrds   NEW!

This was The Byrds’ fourth studio album, released in February of 1967. With this album, they continued their foray into psychedelic music…with a touch of jazz thrown in for good measure. Chris Hillman began to take the spotlight, revealing himself to be a formidable singer-songwriter.

4:00 p.m.   The Beatles: The Transformative Years

The Beatles also moved into the world of psychedelic music in the latter half of the sixties. The album Revolver was really the album that catapulted the band forward in this direction. This is a great playlist.

8:00 p.m.   Janis Joplin Live at Winterland 1968

To close out the evening’s festivities, we hear from one of the most important, influential female rockers of the sixties live on stage at Winterland, Janis Joplin.

Like The Doors, the Beatles had two album releases in 1967. Magical Mystery Tour had the unfortunate task of following up Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an impossible task. We feature it today because it’s still a great collection of transformative Beatle songs.

Our Album of the Week Kicks Off Our ‘Summer of Love’ Experience, I Hear Those Echoes Again, and The Beach Boys Make Us Smile, Sunday, August 9, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a very special new Album of the Week that starts today! It begins our Summer of Love experience here in The Mermaid Lounge!

From now until the end of the  month, we’ll be celebrating the most important cultural aspect of the Summer of Love, the music. It begins today with our Album of the Week!

Here’s your Summer of Love line-up!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience   NEW!

The U.S. release of this groundbreaking Hendrix album came on August 23, 1967, right in the thick of the Summer of Love, and it met with both critical and commercial success from the start. To this date, it is considered one of the most powerful debuts in rock music history, and signaled a new direction in psychedelic music. 

3:00 p.m.     Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

Another amazing musical experience that began in the sixties and continued on: The Laurel Canyon experience with The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and The Buffalo Springfield, for starters. You will hear them and many others if you tune in at 3:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.     The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions

Although this was released by the Beach Boys in 2011, it chronicles the original plans for the Smile album, the Beach Boys planned successor to the Pet Sounds album. Though the original album was abandoned and remains unfinished, the first 19 tracks of The Smile Sessions approximate what it might have sounded like.
