This great live performance is new to the station. We’ve never aired it before. Townes Van Zandt, although not as ‘big’ as Bob Dylan, is often mentioned in the same breath as Dylan when it comes to songwriting. Listen in and see why.

Good morning, and if you’re celebrating, Happy Easter, Happy Passover and Happy Ramadan one and all! We’re keeping it simple as usual on this fine, sunny Sunday.

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: No Dice by Badfinger NEW!

I fell in love with Badfinger early on, and I supposed that’s because I could hear the influence of The Beatles. However, Badfinger was its own juggernaut, helping to create what is known as the power pop genre. It was the one band Apple Records signed that became a big time entity, in spite of the fact that their future held nothing but tragedy. Our album of the week, however, No Dice, was their third studio album released by Apple on November 9, 1970, and helped to expand the group’s popularity, particularly abroad. It was the first to feature lead guitarist Joey Molland. It also gave us the hit No Matter What, and the first recording of the song Without You, which would later become a huge hit for Harry Nilsson.

Last week we aired The Concert for Bandladesh, the very first “cause” concert and the brainchild of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. Tonight we air No Nukes, a 1979 concert from MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), a group consisting of Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Harvey Wasserman, and John Hall. This activist group formed shortly after the Three Mile Island accident in March of 1979. Participating artists in the concerts included Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Tom Petty, Jesse Colin Young, Gil Scott-Heron, Dan Fogelberg, Poco and more.

Yes, the work week has indeed begun once again, but the music is still playing here in The Mermaid Lounge. As I’m learning, many people don’t know who the I-Threes are. They are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths and they are the most influential female band in Reggae and Ska who provided the background voices for Bob Marley & The Wailers. They also recorded albums individually, so today, we enlighten those who have never before heard them sing. It’s a treat.

7:00 p.m. Blind Faith Live at The Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA, August 16, 1969

Blind Faith were an English supergroup featuring Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. They weren’t around for very long, only for one album and one extended summer tour. We’ve got one of those performances from that tour for you today. (I’m sure that the Earl Warren Showgrounds were used for more than music, but the thought of a psychedelic rock band performing at a venue named after a Supreme Court judge makes me chuckle.)

We’re here no matter how damned tired we are because we have The Music Mermaid and she is large and in charge. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) totally free to the listening public. Good morning, Musicologists! We are going to keep it simple on this fine Sunday. We’ve got our new Album of The Week and our multi-artist EP paying homage to women. After that it’s purely our wide Open Stream until tomorrow morning.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Abraxas by Santana NEW!

Abraxas is the second studio album by Santana, released on September 23, 1970, and became the band’s first album to reach number one in the United States. The album has a great back story. Carlos Santana became a fan of Peter Green, the original leader of Fleetwood Mac when they were a blues band, when he saw him perform at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The band decided to cover Fleetwood Mac’s song, Black Magic Woman, on the album. The only change Santana made to the song was the addition of Gabor Szabo’s Gypsy Queen to the end. They also covered Tito Puente’s Oye Como Va on the album, a song that they played live regularly because they considered it a great dance song.

We dive into our great playlist with songs referring to the fairer sex early in the afternoon. There’s no shortage of songs with the words women, ladies and girls in the titles, lyrics or both. I have long been a fan of Leon Russell. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I also remember the first time I heard Carney and thinking that this would be the album where others would recognize just how great he truly was. Carney is Russell’s third studio album, released in 1972. It gave him his first hit single in Tight Rope (backed by Masquerade). The album is a split between straightforward roots rock and a bit of psychedelia. The music critics hate that shit, but his fans didn’t. That’s what mattered. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

This is actually a compilation of ‘live’ performances by Morrison from 1993 recorded December 12, 17 and 18 at both the Masonic Auditorium and The Mystic Theatre. Morrison is in fine R & B and blues mode here, and he brings along special guests to help him out, like Candy Dulfer, John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Georgie Fame. Shana Morrison, his daughter is even along for the ride, handling the vocals on Beautiful Vision. It’s a veritable musical celebration.

This was originally a bootleg (our version), but it was later included in a Dylan box set. Enjoy two masters at work before The Traveling Wilburys.

Here we are again close to yet another year. It’s officially Christmas week, and we’re not going to be playing a steady diet of Christmas music.
