So, who are the I-Threes? The I-Threes are Rita Marley (yes, wife of Bob), Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths and it is the most influential female group in Reggae music. From 1974 right up until Bob Marley’s untimely death ten years later, they provided his rich vocal backgrounds. They also made music of their own. And today we are very excited about putting them In the Spotlight as we continue to focus on the women of music here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Come on, people. This is your chance to tune us in. We’re hear 24/7 around the clock every day trying to bring you the best of music. Released in 1975, Common Sense is John Prine’s fourth studio album. It was produced by Steve Cropper and recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis and Larabee Stuios in Los Angeles. The album features help from old friends Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn who played in Booker T. & The MG’s with Cropper. John Prine was a master at his craft, a master storyteller with a wry sense of humor who always had something to say. His masterpiece, Angel From Montgomery, helped put Bonnie Raitt on the map.

Eva Cassidy is someone we here in The Mermaid Lounge are still getting to know ourselves. She was largely unknown outside of the D.C. area for most of what can only be called a very short career by most standards. She died tragically from melanoma at the age of 33. She moved in and out of various bands, did some time as an artist, and then returned to music. You can read more about Eva here. We are still sourcing more of her music, but felt as though we had enough to spotlight her, so we did. We promise this will be updated, but Eva has a beautiful and emotive soprano voice and she lends it wonderfully to interpretations of jazz, pop, folk and blues. We have a recording of her live at Blues Alley in Georgetown that we’ve played before. We’ll get it back on the programming circuit in the next several weeks.

The first iteration of band consisted of 17-year-old Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper (who was eighteen), Lewie Steinberg, and Al Jackson, Jr., and the rest is musicl history. Tonight we put them In the Spotlight.

11:00 a.m. Our Thanksgiving Tradition: The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie

We’ve been playing this as our Thanksgiving tradition since we started back in 2017, and we continue on today with all 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The song, recorded in 1967, occupies one entire side of Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant album. As Guthrie himself explains it, the restaurant is not really called Alice’s Restaurant, even though the song is about Alice and the restaurant. That factoid is in keeping with the song’s continuing mystery. You can find the lyrics here should you want to sing along.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists
