Although not a commercial success like Dylan, Townes Van Zandt is often put on the same pedestal. He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.

The self-titled, RIAA Gold-Certified debut album by Karla Bonoff is a treasure. She sings many of the songs made famous by her peers: Lose Again, Home, If He’s Ever Near, and Someone To Lay Down Beside Me. She established herself as a masterful songwriter, writing eight of the ten songs on the album. Not to be missed.

Truly the music that inspired us to do this. Originally, we were going to mix this with political talk and then we asked ourselves why we wanted to ruin a good thing. We dropped the politics. 8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Steady As She Goes by Hot Tuna NEW!

Released in 2011, this great blues-rock album was Hot Tuna’s first studio album after a string of live albums, and came after Jorma Kaukonen released his own solo album on Red House Records. When the label showed an interest in a new Hot Tuna album, Kaukonen sprang into action. It was recorded at Levon Helm’s studio (The Band), and he used the same approach that the Jefferson Airplane used in producing their albums. Kaukonen contributed six songs to this album. They have written some of Linda Ronstadt’s most iconic songs, including Heart Like A Wheel and You Tell Me That I’m Falling Down, but their songs have been recorded by many, many other artists as well. They also have had a successful career all their own, and you’ll hear them sing their own songs tonight.

We’re raring to go headlong into another year. It will be our sixth, but we’ve got another whole week left in 2022 and plenty of music to share. We’ve got some special stuff lined up for next week as we celebrate Music Festival Week. Stay tuned!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit NEW!

Spirit was one of those bands that hung around in your head poking you with a stick until you realized just how good they were. I’m not much for reinventing the wheel just so I can say I wrote it, so I’m giving you a great description of the album from a great website called uDiscoverMusic:

Released in November 1970, this was the original psychedelic era’s final masterpiece. Lyrically, Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus wraps up everything that era was trying to say. Songs like “Nature’s Way” and “Nothing To Hide” thumb their noses at the straight world; “Love Has Found A Way” and “Life Has Just Begun” illustrate how much is possible if your mind is ready for it. Musically, it’s endlessly inventive, bringing the band’s jazz, pop and heavy rock factions onto the same astral plane. And though it crystallises a moment in time, it doesn’t sound the least bit dated.
