The Big O left us all far too soon. He never got to see the heights his music would have taken him to. His hits and his legend were posthumous events. It amazes me to this day that people refer to Aretha Franklin’s classic anthem, Respect, without knowing that it was written by Otis Redding. Today we have a rare live performance by Otis Redding from the legendary Whiskey.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

We close the programming with an artist who has written many great songs made famous by artists like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Wynonna Judd. Tonight we get to hear her sing them.

We close it out on a trip in the Wayback Machine to a performance from one of the most influential bands in psychedelic music from Golden Gate Park.

We’re here again today as we are every day, and today we close the post by commending Senator Cory Booker for his heroic filibuster against the most evil empire of our time. We must prevail, folks. We did vow no politics, but these are the times that call for stepping outside those promises. We’re getting close to the 56th anniversary of The Beatles’ very last live performance, an impropmptu concert on the rooftop of Apple Records that blew London’s hair back during weekday lunch. It took the British Bobbies long enough to figure out where it was coming from so that The Beatles managed to record five songs on that rooftop for Let It Be, including Get Back, I’ve Got A Feeling, Don’t Let Me Down, One After 909 and Dig A Pony. It was a momentous musical occasion.

We close the day’s programming with a great live performance from Janis Joplin from the iconic Winterland Ballroom.

It’s time to pull out our House Bands for the holiday, and we start with Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs as we listen to his music with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys and as a solo artist. And these are in no particular order. We don’t have the infrastructure to handle votes from listeners, so we took a very scientific method and pulled song names out of a bucket. (No laughing.) From our perspective, all of his songs are great, so it doesn’t really matter what song is arbitrarily number one and which is number one hundred. Just enjoy the experience!

Kick back and relax with us this weekend. It was a beautiful day yesterday here in the Boston area, but it’s pouring rain today and it’s the perfect day to wrap your head around some great music.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band is widely regarded as one of the greatest electric blues bands ever, whose contributions to the genre during the 60s and 70s cannot be denied, but it’s safe to say a lot of Butterfield’s fans were not enthralled with this release. That’s what happens when people get pidgeon-holed into doing the same thing over and over. Do I think it’s one of their best? Nope. I don’t. But I don’t regret owning it, or playing it as our AOW.
