Good morning, musicologists, and Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mothers (literally and figuratively speaking) out there. We’ve got a great new Album of The Week from Emmylou Harris and then we’re ‘Under The Influence’ starting mid-afternoon.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Pieces Of The Sky by Emmylou Harris NEW!

Emmylou Harris returns with our Album of The Week released on February 7, 1975 (my 21st birthday). This time it’s her second studio release and the first on a major label. It is a tour de force without a doubt. She covers songs by Dolly Parton, Lennon & McCartney, Charles & Ira Louvin, and Rodney Crowell, among others. But the most beautiful song on the album is one she co-wrote with Bill Danoff, Boulder To Birmingham, written for the great Gram Parsons, who passed in 1973.

3:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Hell, it’s always a good day to tune in, turn on, and drop out as far as I’m concerned. New York celebrated the 4th of July with a bang back in 1986 with Dylan’s True Confessions Tour backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty credited Dylan with teaching his band how to be spontaneous on stage and, as a result, The Heartbreakers became one of music’s best road bands.

3:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bruce Springsteen FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Bruce Springsteen as our featured singer-songwriter today with this final airing. Don’t miss it.

8:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Rainbow Room, Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 1972

This is vintage early Bonnie Raitt as we close out our day’s programming in style with this great blues-rock singer and master of the slide guitar who is still making history today.

I have no doubt she’d still be singing if she could. She is missed here in The Mermaid Lounge, but she has left a body of work that remains untouched, and she’s still the queen here.
