Celebrate Friday With Live Bob Marley and Linda Ronstadt, and a Valerie Carter Spotlight Feature, June 7, 2024

Welcome to Friday here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we’ve got two great live performances, one by Bob Marley and the other by Linda Ronstadt, plus a Spotlight feature with the late, great Valerie Carter.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Stanley Theater, Pittsburgh, PA, September 23, 1980

In spite of his ill health, The Legend was game. This would be Bob Marley’s final live performance before his death from melanoma.

4:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Nippon Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan, March 3, 1979

By 1979, Linda’s career was in full bloom, and she was touring largely in support of her Living In The U.S.A. album. I flew out to the L.A. Forum to see her December 24, 1978 show. Her Japan shows on this tour were March 1, 2 and 3 of 1979.

Closing out today’s programming we have the late, very great singer-songwriter Valerie Carter, who was also a friend of Linda. I saw them together at The Orpheum in Boston when Valerie opened for her and then joined her on stage for several songs. Valerie Carter left us too soon, but her music is forever.

On Monday, It’s Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and a New Beatles Playlist, November 13, 2023

Good morning, worldwide workers! We’re back to Monday and we’ve got just what the doctor ordered for your day, including a brand new Beatles playlist in the evening slot.

Here’s your Monday musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Neil Young

4:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, February 28 & March 1, 1978

This afternoon we’ve got a Dylan concert from Budokan, recorded on February 28 and March 1 of 1978. We haven’t heard this one in a while, so it’s time to break it out.

Yes, it’s a new playlist for the station, and it also includes the Beatles’ brand new and final single together, Now And Then, which has shattered a number of records since its release on November 3. It is the fastest-selling single of the century as it skyrocketed to the number one slot in England, over a half century after the legendary band broke up. It’s a thing of beauty, and so is this playlist.

Good Morning, Musicologists! Today we’ve got the travelin’ jones with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Linda Ronstadt ‘live’ from Budokan in Japan.

We start the day at 10:00 a.m. with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP!

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Songs about the road have always been great fodder for musicians and we’ve got a great extended playlist on that subject today! You’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Traveling Wilburys, Asleep At The Wheel, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more!

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, March 3, 1979

It was one of those nights where I hadn’t yet decided on the second act for today. Then I saw Linda Ronstadt’s name trending on Twitter. Like many of her fans, I went into a panic. I was happy to find out that it was just an old interview where she skewered Rupert Murdoch…at a time where most of us hadn’t yet been exposed to what he was really about. She, however, was dating Jerry Brown at the time and was very much in tune. Needless to say, I was relieved. Therefore, you all have this great concert to go to tonight!

Life is full of risks. This is not one of them. This is a no-brainer. We play music all day and night, non-stop, completely free to the public. No. You cannot created “custom” playlists here. But that’s not what radio is all about. For me, the excitement came from wondering what song was coming next. No. You will not hear heavy metal, rap, hip-hop, disco or any related content here. We’re not trying to be all things to all people. But we’re totally free and we’ve got a 29,000-song catalogue at our fingertips, a ton of playlists and more coming. What’s not to love?

Today We’ve Got Some ‘Live’ Dylan, Joni Mitchell In the Spotlight, and Our Multi-Artist Soul Men Playlist, On Monday, November 8, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we give you some Dylan recorded live at Budokan, and we put Joni Mitchell In the Spotlight to celebrate her birthday anniversary. And that ain’t all.

Happy 78th Birthday, Joni Mitchell!

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan Recorded Live at Budokan, Chiyoda, Tokyo, February 28 & March 1, 1978

We kick it all off with some live Dylan this morning from his live performances at Budokan in 1978. Just to put a little bug in your ears, we’ve got a very interesting Dylan playlist coming up a bit later in the week also. Stick around.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Joni Mitchell

Yesterday Joni Mitchell turned 78. We’re sometimes a bit late on the uptake here in The Mermaid Lounge (we’re short staffed on the research side), bit we are never a dollar short. This is an excellent playlist covering her expansive career.

7:00 p.m. The Soul Men, Volume One: Various Artists

Wrapping up the programming tonight it’s our Soul Men playlist where you will hear Ray Charles, Clarence Carter, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Ruffin, Al Green, Bill Withers, The Four Tops, Slim Harpo, The Temptations, Fats Domino, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, and more!

Before, in between, and after we’ve got all that great wide Open Stream courtesy of our Music Mermaid. She has impeccable taste in music, as you know. and has a shitload of material to choose from. And it’s all free from The Mermaid Lounge to your ears.

“Wildflowers” Live, Dylan Live at Budokan, and Our Rock, Ballads & Blues Playlist on March 12, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great mix today. We’re back to the Wildflowers & All The Rest project, for starters. Then some live Dylan and one of our patented various artist playlists. In between, there’s all that great Open Stream.

It’s Bob. Need I say more?

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest: Live Wildflowers

We go back to the great Wildflowers box set this morning for a selection of the best Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live performances as chosen by his family, bandmates and friends. We miss this guy here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live at Budokan, Tokyo, Recorded February 28 & March 1, 1978

Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.

7:00 p.m. Rock, Ballads & Blues: Various Artists

We haven’t aired this one for a while, so it’s time has come around once again. You will hear songs from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Dusty Springfield, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Gregg Allman, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Van Morrison, Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Emmylouo Harris, and more.

We’ve got a lot of people on this morning from all over the world…Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Greece…where are you this morning? All you need is a free browser tab and your finger. What you don’t need is your wallet.

Here’s your line-up for Monday:

4:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live at Budokan, February 28 and March 1, 1978

Although recorded during his 1978 world tour, the album was not released until 1979, after at least one counterfeit made its way to market and several imports were created.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: Toots & The Maytals NEW!

Toots & The Maytals are in the general rotation, but today we feature them in The Spotlight. Reggae legend Toots Hibbert passed away this past Saturday in Kingston, Jamaica at the age of 77, and we aim to give him and his band their due.

Tune us in. We have no idea what you are waiting for but, hey, we’ve got time.
