This afternoon we put The Boss squarely In the Spotlight, the man who pioneered working-class heartland rock.

8:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell with James Taylor and Phil Ochs, Live at The Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, October 10, 1970

This is the concert that launched Greenpeace. The concert featured Joni Mitchell with her boyfriend at the time, James Taylor, and folk legend Phil Ochs in a performance that funded the organization’s protests of the 1971 nuclear weapons tests conducted by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Amchitka Island, Alaska.

It’s a good day to be here, people. We have what we hope to be one final summer gasp today as the temps have finally begun to moderate back into the seventies. Inside, however, we bring the heat from a musical perspective. The button’s below.

Today we begin with the man credited with starting the whole singer-songwriter thing. I saw this guy when he was young, and I saw him as he celebrated his 79th birthday (one day after mine) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was as excellent as I remembered him.

As with all things sixties, it burned brightly and churned out a bunch of great music that was actually heard around the world. We were paying attention to the British Invasion, but most didn’t realize they were listening to us. A great performance by a woman who is not shy about shifting gears and making change. This was the band she put together to take her career-redefining album Wrecking Ball on the road. If you haven’t heard the album, you must.

We continue our tour of Laurel Canyon with a great sixties-seventies band formed in New York City in 1965 by John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky.

8:00 p.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands, March 22, 1972

This often-forgotten supergroup was formed by Stephen Stills in 1971, mostly as a vehicle for Stills’ music. They released two albums before disbanding for good. Other members included Chris Hillman, founding member of The Byrds, Al Perkins, Dallas Taylor and Joe Lala.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Jesus Was A Capricorn by Kris Kristofferson NEW!

This was Kristofferson’s fourth studio album released in 1972. Every response to the album was mixed, but his out-of-character religious song Why Me became a number one hit. How the song came about is explained here. Nevertheless, I loved the album and, in spite of the fact that the title song was released then faded, I think it’s one of his best.

3:00 p.m.  Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

We’re back visiting the inhabitants of Laurel Canyon, the birthplace of country-rock, a fertile creative landscape for two generations of musicians (sixties, seventies). Kris Kristofferson retired from the music business in 2020, but along the way he wrote some amazing songs and helped put some great singers on the map, like Me & Bobby McGee, Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down, and For The Good Times, all hits for other artists. He also had a successful solo recording career, releasing more than 20 albums and reaching number one in 1972 with the brilliant Jesus Was A Capricorn. Kristofferson was also a member of The Highwaymen with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, a supergroup that was instrumental in the success of the ‘outlaw’ country music movement of the seventies. This week Kristofferson is our featured singer-songwriter.

We keep rolling along here in The Mermaid Lounge, playing the music without commercial interruption and the obnoxious chatty DJ’s. We don’t charge you either. We’re completely anti-capitalist. It’s all about the music.

Maria Muldaur is undoubtedly one of the most underappreciated singers of her generation, hanging out with her peers Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, among others. They knew who to tap for background and harmony vocals, and vice versa. On this release, she works with some of the best, including Bonnie Raitt, John Sebastian (founder of The Lovin’ Spoonful), Taj Mahal, and fellow blues singers Angela Strehli and Tracy Nelson.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., also known as Dr. John or The Nitetripper, was a musical treasure whose style combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B. He was active in the business, both as a respected session man and as a solo artist, from the 1950’s right up until his death in 2019. He was originally inspired after seeing another New Orleans fixture, Professor Longhair, live in concert. Tonight, we introduce the late, great Dr. John as our featured singer-songwriter.

However, I did get to see Sir Paul at Fenway Park in Boston and it was everything it was cracked up to be and then some. Tonight we have his New York performance from 2009.
