Thursday It’s Volume Two of Our Sixties Rotation, a Roy Orbison ‘Spotlight’ and Live Little Feat, January 30, 2025

Today we’ve got volume two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ EP, a Spotlight featuring the Caruso of Rock, and live Little Feat, this time featuring the great Lowell George.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’re on the mid-to-late portion of the sixties with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Animals, The Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Wilson Pickett, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Band, The Kinks, Jimmy Cliff, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, The Four Tops, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, B. B. King, and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Roy Orbison

One of the pioneers of rock n’ roll who was blessed with a five-octave range and was known as The Caruso of Rock. He was also a Traveling Wilbury, and his mates considered him one of the best singers on the planet.

8:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, October 31, 1975

I had the pleasure of attending this concert back in the day, and I consider it one of their best. It was broadcast on the iconic Boston radio station WBCN, and resulted in the Halloween night live album Hellzapoppin’. Don’t get me wrong. Little Feat without Lowell George has acquitted itself well. However, Little Feat is only really Little Feat with Lowell at the helm.

We’re here like clockwork all day and all night long, uninterrupted by commercials and chatty DJ’s. We’re all about the music, and we’re totally free of charge. The button is below.

Sunday Brings ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ Followed By a Joni Mitchell ‘Spotlight’ and Live CSNY, January 19, 2025

Good morning, music lovers! We are awaiting a big snow storm here in the Boston area. We’ll see how that turns out. To say that I’m skeptical would be an understatement. However, one thing I’m sure of is that the music will be fantastic today!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

The pioneers of country-rock and folk-rock all hung out here over a two-decade run that produced music to rival The British Invasion on the charts. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Joni Mitchell

We haven’t aired this one in a long time. We have been remiss about sharing this great playlist from a true musical genius.

8:00 p.m. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live at The Fillmore East, New York, NY, June 5, 1970

One of the greatest supergroups of all time (second only to The Traveling Wilburys) joins us this evening for a performance from the iconic Fillmore in New York.

We are here 24/7, not just when we have programming. Before, in between and after we deliver our big, wide Open Stream at no charge to the listening public. The button is below.

It’s Midweek and We’re ‘Under The Influence’ With The Beatles and The Supergroups, Wednesday, January 8, 2025

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to the middle of the week. Tomorrow we’ll be heading for the weekend once again! We have a great Wednesday lineup.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Being under the influence is the subject of many a song as evidenced by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Talking Heads, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Foreigner, Jonathan Edwards, John Lee Hooker, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m. Trippin’ With The Beatles

This afternoon we explore The Beatles psychedelic catalogue, an extraordinary journey. Did you know that Paperback Writer is considered one of the earliest examples of a psychedelic song?

8:00 p.m. Sounds of The Supergroups, Volume One: Various Artists

Tonight we close it out with the Supergroups, like Cream, Blind Faith, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Highwaymen, The Super, Super Blues Band (Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf & Bo Diddley), Manassas, and two of the best damned supergroups of all time, Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris) and our faves, The Traveling Wilburys. You know, nobody ever speaks of Trio as a supergroup, at least not the music media which still entrenched in misogyny, but that is exactly what Trio was.

Like I said earlier, we’re headed for the weekend after today, and we aim to get you there in style. We’re on 24/7 with no commercial interruption. Ever. The button is below.

Thursday It’s Our House EP, an Alison Krauss ‘Spotlight’ Feature, and Live Jimi Hendrix, On January 2, 2025

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to day two of uncertainty in the world, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge where we have our usual eclectic collection on tap!

Here’s Thursday’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

We start out with our House EP with music from Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Alison Krauss

An American treasure with a beautiful voice. She’s also a mean fiddle player. We give you her music from her time with Union Station, her unlikely pairing with Robert Plant, and as a solo artist.

8:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Center, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970

We close with a live Hendrix performance in Berkeley, just four months before his death.

We’re here 24/7 and we play music 365 days a year at no cost to you, our listeners. There’s no commercial advertising and no chatty DJ’s to break the mood. The button is below. See for yourselves.

It’s ‘Mudcrutch Monday Madness’, Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ EP and George Harrison, December 30, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We inch toward the new year with trepidation given that The Orange Blob is back, but the music from The Mermaid Lounge will remain a constant.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness: The Works

We start off with Mudcrutch’s complete works. We haven’t had one of these for a while and it is long overdue. For those who may not know who Mudcrutch is (although I’d find that hard to believe at this stage), it was the band Tom Petty left Gainesville with and headed out to L.A. The band would not be successful until after it had morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers when Petty reunited it. They’re a damned fine band.

1:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We have volume two today, which covers the mid-to-late sixties with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimmy Cliff, Chuck Berry, The Byrds, Ray Charles, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Four Tops, CSNY, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Joni Mitchell, B. B. King, Marvin Gaye and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison

We close out the day with George Harrison and his music with The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys and as a solo artist. He was known as ‘the quiet Beatle’, but Wilbury’s band mate and fiercely loyal friend, Tom Petty, differed with that assessment. You can read his take here.

We’re here every day with all music all day long. In between our programs, we offer a great rotating lineup of more than 27,000 songs. Nobody has that kind of playlist. See for yourselves. The button is below.

Sunday Brings The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Who ‘In the Spotlight’ and Music From Laurel Canyon, December 22, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! It’s a balmy 8 degrees here in the Boston area, where we seem to have wildly fluctuating temperatures. But it’s cozy here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

A new live performance by The Flying Burrito Brothers starts us off today. Although best known for their connection to their legendary founder, Gram Parsons, and Chris Hillman formerly of The Byrds, the lineup underwent a never-ending cycle of changes. The Burritos’ lineup for this show was Skip Battin and Gene Parsons alongside Gib Guilbeau, Joel Scott Hill, and pedal steel legend “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow. Ever changing but always great.

Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and more!

We’re on it today and every day. We’re a 24/7 operation 365 days a year, and we’re totally free of charge and free of commercial advertising. The button’s below.
